So I just finished my first playthrough of Enderal, which I kinda recommended here and in the romance thread recently after my first impressions a few hours in. What can I say now that I've actually completed it? Holy shit. Wow. Asshdskklk... But seriously though... go download and play it immediately. Really, it's that fucking good. Takes a bit for the story to get going, and, yes... the plot 'borrows' a lot from The Mass Effect Trilogy. To where I almost felt like I was playing a weird ME/Elder Scrolls-ish crossover at times. With a healthy dose of Bioshock tossed in for some added weirdness. But it's really, really well done! The pacing, the quests (which were super fun and incredibly varied), the lore, the characters, the environments... All of it contributing to an emotional roller coaster with a nice big dose of 'my mind's been fucked, because what the hell just happened?' In the best possible way. I cried actual tears a couple times, and that's not something games typically make me do. And the romance! I went for Jespar and I think he might be my new favorite video game romance ever. Up there with Garrus and Solas and Anders at the very least. Don't want to gush over him too much in here, but the way he developed as a character and how the relationship tied into the main story was very well done. Though I can't speak for her romance, Calia (the female option) was great as well, and her friendship arc was quite lovely. Put about 70 hours in and still had a bit left to explore, and, according to the Wiki I missed three side quests. I'm tempted to play through it again immediately, but apparently there's an expansion with tons of cut content being restored coming out later this year, so I'll wait for that. Maybe? Anyway I highly recommend it!

OT: This thread's title always confuses me. I keep thinking this is where we vote for our favourite moderators. fialka So how exactly does this mod work? I just download it, start up Skyrim, and...? Cause I'm interested.

Cause I'm interested.Good. Goooood.... You download an installer and run it. It'll back up your entire Data folder (so if you have mods installed and don't have a Skyrim save you'll want to get back to after, you may want to uninstall them first to speed things up - up to you though). It comes with its own launcher. Make sure you hit 'update' (fair warning: the update took a couple hours for me). And then just play it. It has its own mod organizer thingy built into the launcher, but I would recommend not modding it too much - I had installed FNIS and some animation replacers and it messed up some cutscenes and made it crash a lot (by the time I realized that was the culprit I was really far in, but fortunately I was still able to complete it). Do install any character appearance mods you like though - hairs, face and body textures, racemenu and such - since each playable race comes with just one preset and the hair selection's not that great. Vanilla texture replacements work well too - just avoid anything too high res since Enderal is fairly taxing on your PC as is. I really hope you give it a shot, and enjoy it as much as I did! I'd heard of it years ago and was intrigued, but kept putting off trying it because I thought, despite all the positive reviews - 'how good could some fan-made mod really be?' Now I'm kicking myself for not playing it sooner.

I've started playing Enderal. I have some first impressions. They won't be spoilery.
As a note, the only real mod I'm using is Racemenu, which I used during character creation. Aside from that, I have character texture mods for bodies and hair, but nothing major at all. This review is based on raw Enderal.
The environments and towns/cities are all designed very well. In some cases, I'm liking them better than default Skyrim. It's quite nice seeing bright green and lush foliage, since most of Skyrim is cold. I'm liking the voice acting, which seems on par with Skyrim for the most part, but I wouldn't put it at Bioware quality. The music is also very nice, but can be repetitive.
I'm finding the plot, the little I've played of it, creepy and interesting. I haven't really gone far enough into the game to say whether I find it truly compelling.
The major downside for me is the combat. I really do not like how they essentially trashed Skyrim's entire system of "learning by doing" to replace it with their own system of skill books. As an example, let's say you want to focus on combat with one-hand weapons. In Enderal, you find or purchase (primarily purchase) skill books to level up your one-handed skill, and this is the only way to level it. You need points in this to increase your damage. There are apprentice, adept, and expert books, and they get progressively more expensive for each rank, forcing you to hoard money.
However, they did keep the talent trees for warrior, rogue, and mage skills, combining all the necessary things into a single, branching tree. For example, the warrior tree is divided into two-handed, one-handed, and defense, rather than having separate trees for everything, as Skyrim does. Many of the talents are the same, like one that increases movement speed with the shield raised.
I'm a little frustrated with where I am in the game right now. I need to level more to take on some of the quests that I have (that advance the primary plot), but I don't want to do much combat because I feel so weak. In order to regen health, I have to either eat or drink potions. Sleeping also regens, but you need to be in a camp or an inn for that. There are some elements of those Skyrim mods that add realism to things like health regen or camping, which are mods that I've never used, or had any desire to use, so I'm not pleased to see them in Enderal.
Honestly, the most effective type of combat right now seems to be magical, as I can continually move and cast, keeping out of harm's way. But I don't want to play a mage, as I prefer sword and shield play.
I also don't like how they essentially use their own armor models for everything. I don't mind them having special, unique sets and such, but I do wish they had kept the default, boring armor that I can use for most of the leveling experience (before I even acquire unique sets), especially with the mods available for nice texture replacements. Not being able to look in the way that I want to look takes away from my enjoyment. I'm not talking about anything fancy; that's not how I roll in default Skyrim, but being able to wear a full set of coordinated hide armor, or something, rather than their hodgepodge edits. To my knowledge, you aren't able to use Skyrim console commands to add things like Skyrim armor.
I'm also feeling a bit trapped. There is no fast travel. I left my first major town for a big city that is farther away as part of the plot. I didn't really attempt to do many quests in this first town. But because it's so far away from the city, and the city seems to be giving me harder quests, I think I will have to run all the way back. There are long distance mounts, but the one near this first town isn't available, so I can't fly back there.
I suppose that part of my frustration comes from the fact that I'm playing Skyrim, yet it's NOT Skyrim, so I can't do some of the things I can do with Skyrim. Usually, when I start a Skyrim game, I use console commands to: give myself a bunch of healing potions, some iron weapons, a set of hide armor, and increase my carrying capacity. This is all I do for myself, which I don't consider major at all. But this early boost, particularly with the healing potions, allows me to play without concern through these beginning levels, while also looking the way I want to look. But I can't do that with Enderal.
I've met the male follower and gotten to know him a bit. His voice acting is good, and I do like him. I don't really consider him a Zevran-type of roguish character because he isn't nearly as snarky as Zevran is. If anything, I would say that he's more like a severely less snarky Dorian, because he's got a cynical streak regarding worldly matters, which I like, and he's a thinker.
Since we talked about his romance in the other thread, I'll touch on that a bit. As I said, I'm still in the early stages. I'm playing a male character and do plan to romance him. He did make it clear that he's interested in men. Well, he's into both, but his interest in men isn't hidden. I was also able to express my own interest in men. I liked the couple of initial flirts. They weren't excessive from either side, just enough to show initial interest. I've seen him mention women a couple of times, but I haven't played enough to know if it gets annoying. At this time, I don't know if a male character's experience will be different from a female one, as far as he's concerned.
I do want to try to stick it out, despite the annoying bits. I'm not 100% sure yet.

I have finally got my character mods all worked out for Skyrim. Happily, these can be used in both Oldrim and SE. I use the vanilla body, so it can be difficult to find something for both men and women that has the same level of quality and also the same sense of aesthetic style; I don't want rugged men with supermodel women. For males, I'm using SkySight Skins ( SSE version / Oldrim version). For SSE males, there is also recently Tempered Skins for Males. While it is very nice, with a lot of options, I've found that I just prefer SkySight more, particularly with the way the muscle and hair options look. For females, I'm using WICO ( SSE version / Oldrim version). This particular mod is a bit more complicated, and I even posted a short guide in the WICO comments for those who only want to use certain textures. I'm also using Battle Hardened Body Mod (works in both) to give women more muscle definition. For things like warpaint, scars, and eyes, I'm using those assets from the enduring XCE - Xenius Character Enhancement. Everything works in both Oldrim and SSE. Hair is Superior Lore-Friendly Hair - HD textures (works in both), along with Beards (using an old version because I dislike how the newer ones are more wiry and harsh) and Brows (these work in both as well).

I've started playing Enderal. I have some first impressions. *snip* Yay, so glad you've started playing it! As for the plot, no spoilers, but, I will say the further you get into it the better it gets. If you've played the Mass Effect trilogy, the story will be familiar in some aspects but I'd argue Enderal tells it better. But I'll let you be the judge. I do agree that the leveling system took sone major getting used to. My advice is to explore! The areas are leveled by where you find them in the main plot. Riverville's surroundings are going to be the easiest to deal with at lower levels, then Ark which you find next will be slightly harder. The level design is quite good so the dungeons are really fun and varied. And you can find some nice gear to sell in exchange for those skill books. I'm actually doing a second playthrough now where I'm doing a lot more dungeon crawling and I have way more money than I know what to do with. Also some of the side quests will actually reward you with more learning points. And there's a mod that balances out the skill book values which I use to make the prices more manageable in those early levels. I'm also not a fan of the new armor sets. Fortunately I'm good with TESxEdit so I was able to replace some of them with modded armors I like better. As for no fast travel, the Myrad towers will take you between towns, as will teleport scrolls you can buy from most vendors. You can also buy mark and recall spells to mark a spot then teleport yourself back. I never used fast travel in Skyrim, so I actually found Enderal an improvement over Skyrim's limited carriage system. I also agree with your assessment of the environments. Though I love Skyrim's I would say Enderal are a lot more lush, detailed, and diverse. Wait until you get to some of the areas outside those early ones! And yeah, the voice acting isn't quite on par with Bioware (and there's that rare bad one you occasionally come across - like whoever voices some of the kids, yikes!), though there are some standouts in the mix. Glad you're liking Jespar so far! He's an interesting guy. I found him growing on me more and more as the game progressed and I learned more about him. And I was able to romance him with a character who disagreed (albeit respectfully) with some of his world views and was reserved with her flirts. Which was cool, as I like romances that don't force me to go against my roleplay to make them work.

I've only used a few mods; the map with actual roads, multiple followers, and the one where I can marry Serana. Because vampire wife is essential.

I decided to try the Campfire mod for the first time and it's pretty fun! I'm not using it with Frostfall, so I don't have to camp to be warm; I'm just using it for roleplay reasons. You can actually sit around the campfire. If you have followers, they will sit as well. If you sleep in the tent, and if your follower is a spouse, they will cuddle up! I haven't actually made a tent yet, but I'm sure it's adorable. XD

So has anyone else here played Enderal? Or, well, heard of it? If you haven't, it's a total conversion of Skyrim that takes the game's assets and engine and builds an entirely new game from them. As in, if you install it, Skyrim no longer exists, period. (Though there is way to have two Skyrim installs on one computer, in case you want to be able to play both). It's still a medieval Europe based fantasy, but it has it's own areas, lore, NPCs, and story. I just started playing it and it's really cool! I'm not very far in, and I just started over because I rushed through the first hours since I wasn't sure I'd like it, and felt like I missed a lot and wanted a redo. But it kinda gives me a Bioware vibe, with the more linear story and environments (it's open world, but more like Fallout New Vegas, where you're encouraged to move in a certain direction, versus an open sandbox like Skyrim), the heavy use of cinematic cutscenes, and the fleshed out characters and followers. And, it has romance! There's only two options - one male and one female. Both are bisexual. I've only met the male one, Jespar, and started to really like him... right before I decided to start over, anyway. Hopefully I continue to do so. If not, maybe the female character will be awesome enough to encourage me to do my first f/f game romance. We shall see! Also of note, since this gets mentioned a lot in threads about LGBT issues in games - Jespar is actually openly bisexual. As in, he casually mentioned his attraction to men to my female character. Without going all Zevran on me and making sure I'm okay with it. I mean, it's still early so there's no romance yet, but, it's something! And, I've had a couple opportunities now in dialogue, with Jespar and another NPC, to express my character's orientation - or not. And while I see a lot of medieval Europe in the game's culture (what with the female prostitutes and prejudice toward certain races and such), and the subject matter gets pretty dark in general, homophobia doesn't seem to have made the cut. I haven't gotten the impression so far that being gay or bi or whatever is a big deal here. Again, I'm not far in so that could change. But I though it was worth a mention. OMG! I got around to downloading and playing (and completing!) Enderal after reading your suggestion, since I hadn't heard of it before. Wow, what a ride. I don't want to get spoiler-y, but the main quest was something else. I loved the story, and it surpassed any expectations I had. I honestly wasn't expecting that much from a free conversion mod, but the story itself was on par with any of the big names out there. I'd say that the developers, SureAI, rival Bioware in the writing. And yes, I did the Jespar romance . I was flirting with both him and Calia (like the horrible flirt I am in every game), but the whole "mischievous mercenary" thing he had going on won me over that time. Calia is awesome though, so we'll see how things go next time. I started replaying it, but I don't know if I want to finish the main quest again for some time. I got sucked into it and ignored a lot of the side quests. The main quest really was an emotional rollercoaster (seriously), and I need some time to recover lol

I love the idea of characters bonding over a campfire, not just in video games but in media in general! Bonus if its a gay romance! I haven't started Skyrim yet, but I'm not sure if it's best to use mods immediately or wait until after finishing the game once. I'll definitely keep an eye on this one though and check out the other recommendations as well.

Normally I suggest doing a full play and then another one with mods after you've had time to decide on things you might want to change. However, with Skyrim, the play can never end, really. So, for this game I suggest starting out with the thought that your first character isn't your forever character. The reason for this is that some mods are best on a fresh play, right from the start. For example, the Alternate Start mod is really fantastic, but you won't even know if you want to use that without playing through the default start at least once. Play the game for a while and then have a browse around and decide on things you might like to change. Will you be on Special Edition, Legendary Edition (Oldrim), or console? Also, feel free to ask if you're looking for something specific. There are a lot of mods that I know about, but don't use for whatever reason (different tastes, etc). The nice thing about Skyrim is ultimately its sandbox format. There are times where I'll just get on my horse and ride around, with no goal in mind, just because it's fun. Even if I stopped playing for a while, I'd load up the game for that reason alone.

I'll definitely have to test out the game first before settling on anything! I did see your earlier post though and it seems like a decent way to start out. I played Fallout 4 without mods first and only started modding a lot after I finished the main story. It definitely adds to the experience, and I've read Skyrim is much better at these things. I will be playing the Special Edition on PC. Hmm...well if you feel like anything else outside of your first post here adds to the key experience and doesn't change the core game too much I'd definitely be interested in checking them out! I do know that I will definitely end up getting one of those hairy chest mods...
That sounds really nice! I hope I can have as much fun with the game! I'm hoping this game catches my interest enough to be able to flesh out my character through fan fiction. It was a lot of fun doing that for Dragon Age/Mass Effect/Fallout. The thought of playing it is exciting, anyway.

Andrew Mancer It should be a good basis for fanfic, for sure. I don't know hardly any Elder Scrolls lore, so I don't know if that's something you'll want to adhere to, or not. When I write fanfic, I try very hard to stick within the bounds of lore, even going as far as not using certain modern-sounding phrases (boy/girlfriend) unless they've been used in the game, or even something like "Adam's apple" (no Adam in Thedas). That is one huge benefit of the Alternate Start mod for me. I find the default start really limiting for role play, and also don't feel it is a truly neutral place from which to choose a side in the game's primary conflict. I can avoid all that with the mod and make whichever choice for my own reasons. In Skyrim, the PC has no voice. There also isn't really any opportunity for exposition in your dialogue options; there aren't opportunities to say things about yourself. Most roleplay is done in your own head. However, you can do things like refuse certain quests if you're not playing a thief and other such things. Some quests require you to murder or sacrifice people, so you can just not do those if you're playing a good type of character, or in fact do them if you're playing a bad one. There is a crime system in Skyrim, so playing a criminal character is probably a rewarding experience for immersion (some followers are against crime and will report you!)

@nightscrawl I'd definitely like to stick as closely to the lore as possible. When I was working on my original Dragon Age story that has nothing to do with the plot of the games, I made sure to do some research and try to portray the world as accurately as possible. I'm not sure if I succeeded, but it was a lot of fun and I look back at it fondly. I've heard Elder Scrolls is very lore heavy though and I haven't played any of them, so I'll definitely have to explore as much as I can in-game first! I honestly don't mind protagonists without a voice, I loved the Warden in Origins! That all does sound interesting though. Thanks for the info and recommendations!

Andrew MancerModding of Skyrim...I would definitely recommend checking out various gameplay and sound overhauls, if only because the vanilla combat is so lame and unimpactful, at least in my opinion. Then take a look at RaceMenu or other CC overhauls in addition to some facial enhancement mods, because default CC is terrible Those are the most vital for good Skyrim experience imho, you may of course disagree ...oh, I almost forgot, if you want to do either spellsword or dual-wielding character, dual-wield parry would be extremely useful.

Vallerie Can't use RaceMenu in Special Edition. No mods that require SKSE to function. Some modders, when porting their mod over to SSE, have managed to work around it with spell books and whatnot to change settings, but very elaborate ones are a no-go.

I'm working on my mage skills at the moment, but when I go back to being a warrior (my preferred playstyle), I think I'll try using these wet specular maps... Making an account on LoversLab is necessary for some of the, er, more realistic mods and to download those wet maps. Some of the pics at the link are NSFW.
