So what is everyone's headcanon on who takes whom's last name when they get married? I generally go with hyphenation. However, with the idea in mind that Shepard might want to retire, I would say he takes Kaidan's surname. That might provide him at least a modicum of anonymity after the war, especially if Kaidan remembers to use his first name.

So what is everyone's headcanon on who takes whom's last name when they get married? I think Shepard probably (unless they decide to keep their names the same), cause I mean everyone calls him by his last name...people would be completely without a way to signal him otherwise. hahaha!

I like to think Kaidan starts calling him by his first same almost immediately after the war is over (red ending), but it would be an adjustment for everyone else if he didn't have his iconic last name. The reason I brought it up is because I've been thinking about what I would do if I ever got married. I'm personally not a fan of hyphenating last names because it seems like it will cause problems down the line. What if someone with a hyphenated last name marries someone else with a hyphenated last name? "Hi, I'm Debbie Nicole Rodriguez-Gainsbourg-Rutherford-Morrison. No, I've never been married. Why do you ask?" I suppose one guy could just take another guy's last name. An idea that I've been considering is picking a completely new last name for the both of them that doesn't have ties to either family. That's probably my most out there idea. Or they could take each other's last names as a middle name. John Alenko Shepard and Kaidan Shepard Alenko? Hmm...

If it's something that appeals to me ascetically or isn't terrible I'd be glad to change my name for him. I don't have a strong attachment to my family name though, so I don't think I'm typical in that aspect. Though I'm sure there are some last names I wouldn't want-no examples are coming to mind.

I think I would rather take someone else's last name than have him take mine. For our guys, though, I don't know about Kaidan Shepard. Alenko is such a great last name. Maybe the hyphenated route is the best option for the two of them. John and Kaidan Shepard-Alenko, saviors of the galaxy. It's not bad.

They do seem like the type of people that would prefer a little anonymity, and they sure as $&@% deserve at least that after everything they've done.

I had a teacher in high school who had created a new last name combining her maiden name with her husband's...maiden name. So they both had a new surname when they got married. John and Kaidan Shenko.

I know in particular it's true in a lot of Latin cultures. I believe it's "father's father's surname-mother's father's surname". The names thus change throughout the generations but leave a trail. Now, I have no idea how two dudes would handle it with their kids, especially if they have a gay kid who follows the hyphenation route with his or her partner.
