What bothers me is the artstyle. This game is so boring and visually unappealing. It looks like a mix of Destiny and Warframe. It has NOTHING original, nothing that I haven't seen before. Terrible art direction. I won't even talk about gameplay and combat, it is that dull. Yay, bullet-sponge enemies, yaay. Just a generic looter shooter. A fucking last hope for Bioware. Good luck with that. I feel bad for those who still consider Biowar as their favorite game dev. I moved on, found new favorite studios and I feel so much better.

Just a re-cap on what we learned from E3.

For me the old Bioware died when the founders left so i have no real attachment to Bioware. It's just about interesting looking games now.

Well that’s a bummer. I don’t need romance. There are plenty of games that I love without that mechanic. And I don’t mind a multi-player game as long as there’s the option for single player. I’ve sunk hundreds of hours into SWTOR. But having only the option to solo OR do multiplayer because of a lack of companions? No thanks. This will be the first Bioware game since the Sonic RPG that I won’t buy. Unless I hear rave reviews from you guys, I’m peacing out on this one and voting with my wallet. I’m OVER this narrative from the industry that single player offline RPGs are dead. Dave! Long time no see. I'm quite sad about the state of BW right now. Anthem has nothing so far I usually love BW games for, they're just "thinking" about how DA4 should look like, and everyone from the DA team has to work on this game... I guess I'll have 3-4 years to catch up on other games.

This will be the first Bioware game since the Sonic RPG that I won’t buy. Unless I hear rave reviews from you guys, I’m peacing out on this one and voting with my wallet. I’m OVER this narrative from the industry that single player offline RPGs are dead. Preach it. IMO, one of Bioware's biggest strengths is its character writing, especially for companions and "close support" characters like Joker, Traynor, Cullen, etc.; some would justifiably argue that it's the single greatest aspect of many of their games. I didn't grow to love characters like Garrus, Leliana, Tali, Kaidan, Alistair, etc. because of their combat utility; I liked them because they were interesting, and had memorable dialogue, and were used to explore aspects of the game's world. A major reason I replay the Mass Effect trilogy regularly is because I like spending time with the universe and the memorable characters who live in it. As much as I like my friends, they simply do not fill the same niche as a well-written companion character. That's not even getting into the fact that I rarely play video games with my friends, we generally play on different systems, and if we were to do an RPG together we'd almost certainly do a tabletop game where we can give our characters the same sorts of traits that beloved Bioware companions have. As a Destiny type game, it looks really promising. As a Bioware RPG, it's missing one of the single biggest reasons that I love Bioware RPGs. I think I'll pass on this one. Yeah for me characters being with you all the time is the heart of their games. I played DA Inquisition before any DA but while I was lost a bit on its elements, I was engaged by its characters. I wanted to learn more of them, loved spending my time with them. And in Mass Effect 1 I didnt romance anyone but I still felt engaged and my most favorite feature was always to hang around the ship and talk with these characters. Even The Old Republic despite beig an mmo you still have companions that you can later chat with on your ship and meet further and have a true complete solo experience. Which is the part that disappoints me, I thought they would more lean toward the balance of elements of sp and mp they did with TOR instead of leaning more heavily toward Destiny. I also fear this game might be harder if you try to run it solo. And doesnt look like we see much of our character without helmet. At least promo wise Destiny 2 did initially show more characters and engagement between them. Not saying D2 is or looks better, but for Bioware it is quite odd not to see them focus showcasing their strengths here of characters and story.

Thank you for the awesome link. This was helpful for my "Fireteam" to make a uniformed decision about the game. My gaymer pals from Destiny are so fed up with that game and it's content, and, for us, Anthem seems like a step in the right direction for our group's specific desires.

Boy, this totally sounds like a game that was worth sabotaging Mass Effect and delaying Dragon Age who knows how long for...

Honestly? I think now I'm more likely to pick this up. Would I prefer a more single player experience? Sure. Could it not work for me and I end up returning it? Possibly. But I'm not going to begrudge the company for trying something different.

I think this video by Ashe/Lady Insanity does a good job of saying what I'm feeling. I think the point of this conference was to show that Anthem works well as a shoot-n'-loot style game, which I think is probably something they needed to address first so as to get the casual gaming audience excited for it. Now, hopefully they'll show off what kind of story the game has -- and frankly, show how it will work in this different style of game.

But I'm not going to begrudge the company for trying something different. I agree! I'm cautiously optimistic. I've been burned for years by Destiny. My friends and I need something multiplayer. There are still single player games out there. I'm not going to pray for EA's death over no romances. I can't imagine a romance in Destiny, so why would I expect it in Anthem, just because it is done by Bioware?

I have zero interest in a single thing Ubisoft has shown to be honest, but who knows.

I don't begrudge BioWare wanting to try something different, outside their usual wheelhouse. I even think a new IP would do them some good. I just keep coming back to this feeling that Anthem as it's being designed is something that's been forced on BioWare less than something they want. Like, it is just SO divergent from BioWare's usual MO, it doesn't FEEL like a BioWare game to me.
But you know... I really don't wish this to fail. I really don't. BioWare might be on thin ice with EA, and I might have a list of grievances longer than both my arms combined, but I want them to be able to continue to produce the game franchises they've established.
That said, I also consider an always online game a hard pass, so I won't be picking up Anthem, not even as a show of solidarity. I am not paying full price on a new game that I'm not going to play.

I would love a new IP from Bioware as long as it felt like a Bioware game (they could even drop the romance drama and I'd happily support it), but this online co-op bullshit is not for me. But I want more Dragon Age, so I hope it's not a total flop. I just also hope it isn't a runaway success so they don't become a one game studio.

Like, it is just SO divergent from BioWare's usual MO, it doesn't FEEL like a BioWare game to me. It's good to remember that Bioware was trying to do multiplayer content as early as the first Mass Effect game. I think it's fair to say that this is something they've been thinking about doing for a while. And besides, characters still sound like an important part of the game, they're just not out in the world with us, and it sounds the world is going to be littered in lore, like in past games. But I totally get you on the "not for me" thing. I'm normally the same (tried Destiny, couldn't get into it), but it looks like they're trying to balance what I like about Bioware games with what sounds potentially fun about these kinds of multiplayer games.

Found this while lurking over in the BSN. Seems to me like Casey is starting to walk back their comments about "no romance" in light of all of the positive feedback from other games in this arena. I might be wrong, but it reads to me like someone is trying to woo us all back after realizing that there's now competition. I'm still a "no" for Anthem, whether there's flirtatious romance-light dialogue with your NPC crew or not. No companions, more or less "mandatory" online multiplayer, and straight up third-person shooter game play is too far on the "no" side of the scale for a few "light romances" to make up the difference. Thoughts?
