So I'm finally getting around to finishing the Atlantis DLC. I've already finished Torment of Hades. And I was not that impressed with it. It wasn't *bad* by any means, but it was a lot weaker than Fields of Elysium was. Mostly because it was very fetch quest-y and lacked the strong plot that Elysium had.
Persephone, Hermes, and Hekate were all well-defined characters with their own motivations that played off each other well. Hades is just weird and menacingly lurking in the background.
I think they funneled most of the development into the quests where you meet people from your past in the Underworld, which was a really satisfying experience, but it doesn't really make up for the weakness of everything else. Especially when you're told you have to find legendary heroes like Achilles and Herakles, but they're hardly even characters and it just ends up being a tough merc fight from the vanilla game.
Also while it was an appropriate choice, the Underworld is fucking ugly and unpleasant to look at which is so jarring when it's stuck between Elysium and Atlantis which are both stunning. I just started Judgement of Atlantis, so I don't have much to say about that yet. Besides why the fuck can't I kiss Atlas??? He's so tall and pretty. *heart eyes*

Why can’t you kiss him? Well, there’s a quest about that...

So yesterday I breezed through and finished the base game. Did Pilos, then Athens pt. 2, A Brother's Seduction, Lykaon's quest, the family and cult endings, Romancing the stone garden, the third ending, and Herodotus' quest. Now only the story DLC is left. Yes, singular, DLC, what a shame they released just one.First of all, the fun stuff - I chose Timotheos and liked him more, but that scene with his brother? woof Lykaon was great, had way too little content, and I'm gonna headcanon around all of the stuff, because he and Alexios would be so great together Concerning the Assassin's Creed part of Assassin's Creed Odyssey: that was like 15 minutes content in total. I guess it didn't constrain them that much, aside from the mythical beasts, but I wonder if the current day plot is way more trouble than it's worth. It didn't really go forward, it's not really making much sense anymore. Like the Misthios is supposed to be an Isu descendant, and the game is like "they're the pre-Assassin," but also they're fighting for order, so really supporting the templar cause? "I used to think chaos is bad, but now I'm not so sure, cuz dad said otherwise." And Aspasia was like "all was k, but then meh, we good? I want to go from total chaos to a dictatorship, where individuality is bad, because I saw visions, but unlike yours mine didn't tell me balance was important. Also, let's tease AC: Rome." ? ? ?
Ubi Quebec was extremely uninterested in the modern day plot, it all felt like checking boxes. They were super into the family quest and Greece in general, hence "Gods and Monsters." I was shocked that the game gave me 100% completion and new game+, before I finished the Atlantis quest.
I used to love the near future sci-fi setting. But it's standing still ever since 3, and unless the next game has a setting I love, like Ancient Greece, and lots of gay romance without the * , I don't care about it. Anywho, some vistas and Alexios

I legit thought when I first played that the scene where the player gathered with their allies to plot how they would handle Kleon was meant to be the origins of the Templars. Like I really feel like this game would have been stronger with that - hell, it would even have been a great launching point for the reveal that they were alive and had withdrawn from the world, that they’d watched this organization they’d begin to bring order to a war torn world be so twisted and corrupted, much like the Cult of Kosmos had.
And yeah, it’s pretty clear that they hang on to the modern plot just because they can’t quite cut it off. Since that’s the case, I wish they’d just do a modern exclusive game and wrap it up. Then they could stick to historical tourism things afterward. But this trying to have it both ways, where they can’t disconnect it from the DNA of the series but clearly don’t care about it... It really can’t hold. Something’s got to give.

Yeah, but while most of the cult is about chaos, Kleon specifically was meant to conquer all of Greece and unite it under one rule. Which is exactly what the Roman Empire will do. So why is one an agent of chaos and the other of order? Previously bringing war and undermining democracy were something the templars did. Now it's the assassins, because the way the cult did it brought more chaos? The point that assassins can be bad is not really new, they really drove the point with Jack the Ripper. But since they haven't mentioned "the cult is like the pre-assassins," we haven't really seen assassins be the bad guys. So "too much of one thing" is not really shown, since the templars are always the shady corrupted organisation. 11 years into a franchise is a bit late to introduce the idea that maybe the guys that have the control are bad, no matter the faction.

Spontaneously deciding to start a replay of this because if I don't take a break from shiny hunting Meowth in Shield I might actually have a mental breakdown.

Hmm some early 'leaks' for new AC game. grain of salt etc. Sailing returns is less combat intensive and more focused on exploration and travel including being able to navigate tight rivers and wetlands - Parkour is upgraded with tree climbing and new animations - The hidden blade is back and is far more customizable in terms of cosmetics. Can be upgraded to kill in one stab - Stealth is upgraded by having physical stealth skills such as hiding in mud, snow, crouching in bushes, hiding in bales of hay, etc.- Players can now also hide in crowds of civilians if their outfit/ armor is appropriate otherwise it can attract attention. - Players now have a reputation system based on quests completed for people in cities, the town officials, clothing worn, crimes committed, etc. Some quests and story missions can only be completed after reaching a certain reputation with kingdoms. - Conquest battles return to help capture some settlements from templars and players can approach them in a variety of ways. - Players can also find battles between warring kingdoms occurring dynamically throughout the world. - Multiple settlements throughout the world can be captured and controlled for trade and currency gains - Players can organize large scale raids of forts and cities with nearby viking camps, wait for their own raids, or go in by themselves. - The assassins are believed to have a connection to Odin and dub their raven drone as odin sight .- Difficulty returns but focuses more on parry times, player health, and enemy reaction times rather than enemy health - Levelling is overhauled to allow players to improve skillsets to gain experience, like in Skyrim. As a result, level locking regions and content is gone. - Some skills are unlocked by reaching a high enough skillset level, some must be bought with skill points, and others are unlocked through game/ story progression. - The map is massive. Like all of northern europe. My source mentioned big cities being York, London, Paris, and kiev. Every kingdom was meant to be really unique.

So... Are we taking bets on the "return to 'old school' style" "Ragnanok" where the protagonist is fixed to sidestep all the controversy from Odyssey?
I mean, on the one hand, I'd say that the fact that base game Odyssey wasn't the issue might be a mark in favor of keeping the Odyssey "RPG-esque" style, plus the way that the narrative arc involving the Precursors is playing out seems to at least be trying to play with the concept of Layla's actions in the Animus and now with the Staff are actively influencing and altering history, which encourages the variable protagonists and romance options.
On the other... There is an unpleasant tendency from companies in general to take away the wrong lesson from their mistakes and the resulting backlash, so it is all too easy to believe that "First Blade got players pissed off because of the romance, so no romance in the next game!" is their takeaway, rather than "we lied to the players and they rightly called us out, we don't do that again."

Sadly I do feel they are going to backtrack on the rpg situation. As much as people liked it here and about-a lot of very very vocal fans hated it all. Not just the romance stuff either, just the choices in general somehow offended them it seemed. -shrug- All I can say is I almost wish they hadn't done the romances since it raised my expectations of them, and then they crushed my dreams of them actually caring (even if just a little) with that dlc. Now I really don't think there's much left for me in a series that I really enjoyed even before Odyssey. I keep hoping I'll "let it go" and be able to enjoy the game for what is there-but it hasn't happened yet.

I'm not sure about the romances, but Odyssey sold more copies than Ubi predicted and outperformed any other game in the series. You never know with Ubi Montreal (and not Quebec) doing the next one, but they will probably ignore any complains and try to emulate Odyssey as closely as possible. Let's hope that includes same-sex content.

I feel like the end result may be that Ragnarok will have another variable protagonist, but they won't have romances, and they'll call that the middle ground.
Like, if I'm going to put money (that I don't have) on any option, that's probably where I'd lean towards the most.
