*Contains plot spoilers* Those historical accuracy posts about homosexuality in Ancient Greece are goddamn cringy. Guise pls, the stupid it hurts. I've just been browsing this thread feeling happy for everybody who's excited about Odyssey, but Ubisoft sandboxes have never really appealed to me much so this is the first gameplay video I've watched. I'm actually genuinely kinda interested now; that Spartan Kick in particular looks like a lot of fun.
I really hate it when people use claims of "historical accuracy" as a bludgeon and an exclusionary tactic, especially considering how often said people get their facts wrong and/or maintain an exclusionary double standard. For instance, it saddens me to see how many people want to see a Nazi Germany campaign in Battlefield V and how few want to see a Chinese campaign, despite the fact that China lost more soldiers than Japan, the US, and the UK combined.
I'll speak from an american viewpoint but ww2 for a lot of us is either fighting japan or d-day so yea I don't think most realize what china did in the war at all.

And I found this in the same search, so (note: I simply searched "Canada"): Fun fact: this year at least, the Canadian Embassy in Washington D.C. apparently flew this flag in advance of D.C.'s pride events: Woo, go us! I bet that's more than any U.S. governmental institute did. We sure will! Have a picture of a Mountie riding a moose And I found this in the same search, so (note: I simply searched "Canada") You're not helping with my Canada saviour complex Ha, sorry! We're not perfect, so I don't want to oversell it, but I hope you get here soonish. - *Makes post about gay content* - *Uses a picture of a straight romance* As for that responder, just wow. The Greeks were Christian? That's why we have this thing called "Greek mythology" that's completely separate, right?
them gays were created in the 80's what is this SJW bullshit Jesus personally christened Greece in 478BCE, and the Communists were so mad about it they worked for the next 2400 years to create the gays in the lab. #truestory I know technically you said "before common era", but I still find that sentence paradoxically amusing But then I became confused about why centaurs are so-named, since they are no-part-bull, and I couldn't find an answer. Okay, so I'm a bit of an etymology nerd and this bugged me too so I went digging. Centaur comes from the Greek word κένταυρος which comes from the proper noun Κένταυρος (kéntauros). A Kéntauros was a member of a savage race of "beast men" from Thessaly. I say "beast men" but when they were originally described by the word pheres which can mean beast men but can also mean savage men riding beasts (likely horses) so nobody knows whether the original centaurs as described by Homer were half-man, half-horse or just wild men on horseback which brings me to the etymology of the word: Ultimately, no-one is sure but there is a theory that the word comes from κεντρόω (kentróō) which means to goad and ταυρος (tauros) which we all know means bull. The original meaning of goad is "drive cattle with a pointed stick". Said stick is also called a goad (who knew?) So you could take the word to mean cattle herder but it's more like bull piercer, as in I don't think the wild men were herding their own cattle but driving off or perhaps hunting the animals with some type of spear or with bow and arrows; the latter being more likely as centaurs are know for being accomplished archers. κεντρόω also euphemistically means to sting by way of it's original meaning .So there you have it; an overly long explanation of what the Oxford Dictionary already told me which is that the word is of "unknown ultimate origin". ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Thanks for the additional info, even if the origin is still elusive! Always interesting to learn more. Ooooh! "Ooooh " is right! Spartan helmet! And the braid's still there, hope it's like that ingame. And are those scars on her arm? Cool. Dual-wielding a shortsword and speartip-dagger thingy (don't know what it is)? Also cool. Replying to @ubisoft @assassinscreed I'm not against allowing the player to choose its sex but they're so pushing the female characters, this year. It's kinda forced and fake. And annoying. This is not expanding the player base at all. If anything this is just unattracting more males in the community and male players make a large percent of these games. Well that reply would definitely earn a bingo, if we made one for dudebro responses to women in games. Yeesh
Claiming male players will be alienated and turned off by an optional female protagonist? For the few idiots that's true for (like the poster) it's about as pathetic as you can get - you literally lose nothing in this game, you can still play as a male! And they call us fragile.
But for most players, it won't matter at all, for the above-mentioned reasons. Claiming it won't expand the playerbase is obviously bonkers to anyone in this thread, or anyone with half a brain.
And how the hell is including women "forced"? We exist, last I checked, so it shouldn't be weird to see us in fiction too. Why is including men not "forced"? I hate how goddamn male-default the world is. We shouldn't make an impression (just like having a gay character should be no big deal). We shouldn't be thought of as this "other" thing, like Vy's post about Amelia Earhart exemplifies. We are just as "default" and valid as you. Ugh. Why should we have to to fight to get anywhere? Some men clearly don't realize how lucky they are, or how entitled.
/Rant
Replying to @ubisoft @assassinscreed I'm not against allowing the player to choose its sex but they're so pushing the female characters, this year. It's kinda forced and fake. And annoying. This is a point that seems to come up a lot, and it's honestly confusing. Heaven frakking forbid a video game company talk about some brand new features in its upcoming video game at E3, especially when they're features that tend to attract players outside of the typical audience.
Just look at how many people here first came to this thread and got excited about the game because Ubisoft said "Yes, you can play as a man or a woman, and yes there will be inclusive romance options," and were then receptive to hearing about the other neat features (more action RPG elements, naval combat, etc.) as a result of that initial hook.
This is the takeaway I hope very much that Ubisoft (and any other devs watching) gets from this move. I hope increased sales and praise from new fans drowns out any loud, spoiled dudebros who can't accept change (even when it doesn't affect them).
Now we just need them to echo the BFV devs and bluntly tell them they can leave if they don't like it.
No one's forcing you to play the game, and good riddance if it offended you. I'm reminded of that Joss Whedon quote Gomez posted: "We lost some fans we didn't want anyway."

and speartip-dagger thingy (don't know what it is)? Also cool. I think it's the special weapon Kass and Alexios get, the broken spear of Leonidas, or something like that.

Either way, yeah It is not as bad as some accents. I can understand them easily which is always the number one priority. I can understand most British accents easily too, but occasionally there have been some brit actors that sound like they aren't really talking at all...just like mumbling with marbles in their mouths. hehehe. Though I do love a well-spoken British accent. Super hawt.

I'm low-key more into Kassandra than Alexios. Me too not gonna lie. I like to player as female in games since I was a kid, and the only thing that draws me to play as Alexios is being gay, I'm really liking Kassandra more, I dont know, kinda like more the dynamics with her. Every time I see Alexios I'm like I want to fuck him not being him XDDDDDDDDDDD

and speartip-dagger thingy (don't know what it is)? Also cool. I think it's the special weapon Kass and Alexios get, the broken spear of Leonidas, or something like that. Oh, that's cool! An ancestral weapon and a broken artifact weapon at once! Reminds me of using a broken sword as a dagger in Shadow of Mordor. This one features Kassandra and I got to say, it was soo hilarious I didn't watch a lot of that video (because I don't want to see too much), but a few things I thought I'd comment on: 1. Kassandra is the protag Ubisoft is "most proud of"? Interesting I hope that (continues) to show in marketing. Not that they shouldn't also show Alexios, but since gender-selection is new to the genre, it would make sense to show Kass a bit more. Always down for showing both in the same trailer. Let's see if they can do better than Bioware!
I'm actually pretty sure they will... Especially if their attitude is that they're most proud of Kass. You see this, Bioware? You should have done this years ago.
2. Found an instance of gender choice factoring in, in a fairly expected way. Kyra muses that Kass may be Athena herself. I wonder what she says to Alexios.
3. Glad there's an inventory system with weapons, armour, gear, etc. as well as a skill tree as we already knew. Good RPG stuff!
Edit: Just noticed it looks like Kass has a lip scar as well, nice. I had one on my Quizzy (and Cullen has one, of course). Glad they aren't shying away from giving our lady some scars.
I want to watch those videos, but as soon as I start it feels so spoilery...abort! lol I've been doing jumps in the videos XD I really like how expressive Kassandra is, even more than Alexios! There is a trend of that, in games with gender-selection. Basically all of them that I can think of, in fact. Lucky me that I like playing female characters!
