40 years old? Pah. Let's try 45 years ago. Quark, Strangeness & Charm by Hawkwind, on Marc Bolan's rather idiosyncratic music programme. Probably subconsciously inspired by nerdy video game characters du jour.
Edit: actually it can't be 45 years since he mentions Star Wars: I remember seeing it when it was first released and that was... er.. 1977?

I wonder if all the retro songs are going to make a comeback to the scale of retro gaming. I think they already did to some extent: I hear loads of stuff being played on the radio from when I was a kid, the early '80s apparently going through a bit of an extended renaissance at the moment. Also thinking of that mod I've been working on, I loved it when you first encountered Liz in Bioshock she was humming a Tears For Fears song. |
