This will be told in multiple parts across three games. Expect lots of posts and maybe even pics! In fact, here's a pic of him to get things started.
Colin Shepard was born on the farming colony of Mindoir, in the Attican Traverse. He was the youngest of three - Mara and Gordy being his siblings - born to Hannah and Owen Shepard. He was a good boy and loved his simple life, dreaming of one day marrying and starting a family on a farm of his own (since one of his siblings would undoubtedly inherit the family farm).
In 2170, when Colin was sixteen, batarians raided Mindoir looking for slaves. Most of the colonists were killed, including all of Colin's family. His latent biotic abilities kept him safe and allowed him to hide. When the batarians left, Colin was saved by a passing Alliance patrol. By age eighteen, Colin enlisted in the Alliance.
Having no family but the Alliance, Colin was driven to succeed. Early in his career, Colin was posted on the Alliance's oldest colony of Elysium. In 2176, Elysium came under attack by slavers, crime syndicates and batarian warlords led by Elanos Haliat in what became known as the Skyllian Blitz. However, Colin was on shore leave at the time. He returned to rally a resistance force and was able to single-handedly repulse the enemy ground forces long enough for reinforcements to arrive. As a result, Elysium was saved and Colin was regarded as a war hero. He was awarded the Star of Terra for his actions.
Colin entered special forces and graduated from the Interplanetary Combatives Training program with the N7 designation, the highest attainable. This is the only "N" designation that can be worn on a uniform.
In 2183, Lieutenant Commander Colin Shepard is assigned as XO of the SSV Normandy, a human/turian collaboration with technology never before seen in the galaxy. The very first assignment they receive is ferry Nihlus Kryik, a turian Spectre, to the human colony of Eden Prime. This world is a paradise by human standards and no one can figure out why a Spectre or the most advanced ship in the galaxy would be doing a milk run. Flight Lieutenant Jeff "Joker" Moreau suspected a cover-up while by-the-book Staff Lieutenant Kaidan Alenko suggested trusting the chain of command. He was also easy on the eyes.
When Captain David Anderson summoned him to the comm room, Colin suspected answers were forthcoming and headed there to find out the situation.
