It wouldn’t surprise me if the prelaunch focus on those characters was because they played a bigger role in earlier drafts then had their parts reduced, but no one in marketing got told about the change. This whole game seems wrapped up in the left and right hands not knowing what the other is doing.

Just remembering everyone was so into Arthur Jenkins prelaunch. Much like Jackie though he dies extremely early on and has no actual part in the game. Wild how they focused so much prelaunch on characters that went nowhere. I really hated that it was made to feel like you could save Jackie if maybe you played that gig differently. How perhaps if you'd gone in silent and stealthy it might never have happened - but then the whole thing surrounding that moment was still different to what they'd shown in the trailer because surprise, the trailers were full of shit. They wanted his death to be hard hitting but then you meet him for a bit and then... they skip like six months of the two of you doing stuff together in that stupid montage, and then you're expected to feel sad about his death when you've had no time to get to know him. It just sucks that they changed direction with the story to ram the whole Johnny stuff in. The early trailers showed none of that crap with him so it was clear they added him later in the development and then had to upheave everything in the plot to wedge him into it.

It's the worst how they keep making V talk like they were SOOOO close. It's like Jackie who for me...we learn almost nothing about him, and even most of the time he's around he doesn't take part in the content.

Jackie is an interesting example of how the pre Keanu game might have been a better story for a role playing game. Jackie seems to have been meant to be important for one of V’s origins, and then what happens to him would Br more impactful. But when they added Silverhand as a main character, they seemingly shrunk the origin feature, likely removing other background’s characters or tweaking them severely, and shrinking Jackie into a plot device.
It kinda seems like CDPR was so un confident in their original story that when they finally got Keanu they basically rewrote the whole thing to make V a side character to Keanu.

I don't know if I'd say that it was a lack of confidence in the original story and more... compensating, if not overcompensating for the fact that Keanu was on board. It's entirely reasonable to think this is a case of celebrity-jacking the project, on the basis that his involvement is something that either they were told or felt they had to capitalize on in the actual game, and so built up his role more and more once he was signed on.
Like, it really can't be overstated how unusual it is for someone of Keanu's level of stardom to be doing VA work for a video game. It's one thing to get nerd culture icons, the people who have been draws at ComicCon and similar, who have been doing this for years. Even BioWare games, look at the biggest name they've really had, the name most non-gamers would recognize - Freddie Prinze Jr. is probably the most "known" VA they've had, and his mainstream film career pretty much ended after the early 2000s. But Keanu is still on the A-list of today's stars, of people who headline a movie and their name, not the plot or anything else, are expected to be what draws an audience.
Once they got Keanu, honestly, that probably hijacked a big chunk of the plot development, because they HAVE this A-list star in their game, now they have to justify why they're paying him, since his paycheck is probably a decent chunk of the game's resources right there. If like a quarter to half of your budget (I'm not saying this was what he was paid, just using numbers I can grasp) goes to a single VA, voicing a single character, then you're making that character heavily involved in the plot to justify that decision.

I would certainly hope there is a cyberpunk 2077 sequel in the future with no celebrity invasion. While I like Johnny-I also am very annoyed by him a lot of the time too.

Hypothetically having an iconic celebrity isn’t bad, but it seems like they wanted to basically make Keanu the protagonist with out actually doing that
It’s just a shame as I think underneath the weird obsessions of Keanu hype and giant open world fixation they could have had a really good game maybe even decade defining like Skyrim was for the 10s, but it remains unseen if this game will truly get out of the dog house. But in a way this might be decade defining cause it was massively developed, disorganized, expensive, hyped by false advertising, flopped hard, but made tons of money. And like that feels like the trajectory of the 20s: horrible disasters that make tons of money some how.

The sad truth is had it not been overhyped, only released on current-gen, and the focus had been able to be on the DLC (aside from small tweaks here and there) this could have been a very successful game (especially given it's mostly a new ip, I know there was another game-but I never heard of it even till this game was nearly out). I really wish devs would learn to not over hype in particular. Don't promise features till they are nailed down specifically.

The latest patch (the one right before it came back on the ps store) seems to have introduced more graphical glitch fuckery on xbox SS. It's not game-breaking, or even all that bad but it can be annoying at times. Sometimes I wonder if these patches somewhat hinder the current version to make the glow-up of the 'current gen' versions that much more impressive when they happen. (Or will the new glitches simply show up for the party too) I really wish there were some solid details on when the updates are coming, we haven't even had the free DLC that was supposed to come out "early 2021". Not looking good for this year even for the new versions. Of course, the pessimistic side of me keeps expecting them to cancel the ps5/Series version altogether.

Ooph.
I know the “timeline apologies” are kind of loved by hurt fans when video games under deliver, but especially in CDPR’s case, they got in this mess cause they overworked their team to fit arbitrary deadlines, so ironically the comforting timeline has always stood out to me as a “you don’t get the problem you’re apologizing for do you?” thing.
But also COVID stuff is still probably delaying things too. Most my friends who work in tech/gaming still aren’t back in the office. Even in America where apparently the consensus is the pandemic is over and most people are back in the office in other fields.

I caved and picked up the game for half price. I don't plan to properly play just yet, but I wanted to play around a bit. Mhmmm those tasty glitches. Also had another npc with hot pink shoes missing texture, and no lower body, I've barely done anything in the game yet. I think my V's expression kinda encapsulates my feelings right now. But hey, I plan to heavily mod the game and make my own head canon, so whatever at this point.

It's an odd case for this game's second chance new version next year. It'll have a lot more competition in theory from the likes of Horizon Forbidden West. I really hope it brings something impressive, as I still enjoy the game but I'd love to see some true growth.

Aw damn. I knew there was a game I wanted to buy on sale…my mind completely spaced this. Not that I want to support the company but I wanna support the genre and honestly its almost like you have to experience this thing.
The next sale is Dec 22 to Jan 5 I believe.

Not that I want to support the company but I wanna support the genre and honestly its almost like you have to experience this thing. The next sale is Dec 22 to Jan 5 I believe. I was waiting for it to go low and 50% off is the cheapest I've seen it outside of GoG/Consoles, and I wanted it on Steam. CDPR is still in the trash can unless they do something to blow us out the water with the updates next year - but I've had a head canon for my V and a 'character' for him since the game was first announced and I really wanted to put that character into the game so to speak. I am however mostly ignoring the main story right now to explore and look around and I'm heavily modding the game because the romances are so atrocious. Only character swapping can save the awkward as fuck Kerry romance scence and the forced hetero romance scenes won't be so bad when I can character swap them into different people. I've not played much so far, mostly just checking on my mods and messing around but I've certainly had... some issues. AI is really dumb sometimes, enemies will just stand there right in front of me and let me hack them, and others will lob grenades at their buddies I'd tried so hard to taken down non lethally, and that's on top of the texture bugs, limb missing npcs, and npcs who sliiiiide across the floor before springing into their animation. But hey, I'm a Fallout/Skyrim player so those sorts of bugs don't really annoy me - it was generally everything else about the game that made me refuse to buy it at full price.

LOL, gotta love the bugs! I think the funniest I ever got was the time I used my phone to call a car and it showed up and started doing donuts all over the road and sidewalk. It turned into a death machine and I could not stop it till I loaded a previous save. I may have watched it raise hell for a good while for the lol's of it.

Yeah I love bugs. Half of the reason I mod Skyrim is to see what bizarre bugs I can unleash upon the good people of Riverwood.
And I never bought a Witcher game (I read the books, the games look worse than the books on many levels, and the show is okay so I have no desire to play CDPR’s Geralt fanfic especially cause in the books his story ends very, very satisfyingly and the books are pretty freaking progressive for a fantasy series by an old man while the games seem regressive). So CDOR has never financially benefitted from me, but the fact they put lgbtq characters in CP2077 (for good and ill), the fact they let us customize a lot about our PC, and the fact I love cyberpunk as a genre, I’ll throw 50% or more off monies at them. But only for those reasons. They are a shit company.

I have reached the point in the game where I've met Silverhand. He's... a dick, I don't like him at all right now. I also ugly cried over Jackie, and my V. I'm still deeply bitter over the false advertising trailers that made me think for so long we'd be able to save him if maybe we did the mission differently. (It being railroaded just kinda sucked.) Same goes for T-Bug, I actually really liked her from the brief interaction we had. I'm just barrelling through the main story as quickly as possible so the game will finally let me explore the areas I want to visit instead of telling me there's 'nothing out there for me yet.' Also visited Clouds. The scene with Angel was kinda sweet, my V being vulnerable was kinda aww. Still kinda meh about the canon name, but Vincent has actually grown on me for this character, even though head canon wise, he only tells like one person it eventually. Also had two crashes so far, and a certain scenes intensity was kinda... negated when the guy doing the murdering was missing his hands, just straight up not there. Hard to take seriously at that point. Edit: I'm 22 hours in and had zero problem with the first person. Right up until Silverhand and the rest of the world started glitching in (and it bugged and stayed on my screen instead of going away, had to reload to get rid of the effect.) But ooof did that not feel good. Thank fuck for mods to remove the glitch effect because wow.

I was looking through the mods and it was kinda amazing how many of them are about removing annoying visual effects.

Yeah, I have a bunch of mods to remove the glitch effects (Silverhand, inventory, the world) just because it made me feel ill. I get what they were going for with it, but it's not fun if you're someone who struggles with motion blur, or first person issues in general. Other than a bit of head bobbing annoyance I've been lucky that the first person in this game hasn't made me feel sick.

Screen noise that you have to load back into the game to remove is certainly the most annoying bug!
