Templar Carver for me, with sarcastice M!Hawke. my stuff (But I liked also Circle-Beth so much, just was so hard to find a logical reason to leave her at home in Kirkwall...to me, ofc.)

All but one of my many DA2 playthroughs have been either Warriors or Rogues, so I got to know Beth more and I think she does better in the Circle than in the Grey Wardens

I played way more as a rogue than as a mage, so I saw more of Bethany than Carver, but I find Bethany just... so, so dull. I make her a Grey Warden, because then she actually does something. >_>
Carver is a petty, selfish dipshit, of course, but that is why he is more interesting, and I almost always let him become a Templar because that makes for the most interesting narrative, given that the story is essentially about Hawke's family drama. That said, I wish more had been done with him.
Bethany needed a complete rewrite, she is barely a character.

RP wise, my Hawkes (regardless of personality) tend to be very focused on family and trying to make sure that they don't all die. This means that it is easier for me to leave her at home because the Deeproads are more immediately dangerous than Kirkwall for her. Of course, the big downside to Beth being in the Circle is that she doesn't show up again until the end of the game, were as she appears a few more times before the end when she joins the grey wardens. This is why I always bring her along when I do the story DLC. I really like Beth so more time with her is always good.

Carver's more fun, but there are one-two moments, when Bethany shows herself. And at the end that beautiful, when she leaves behind her burden-feeling. I think, she's well written, only problem, that we see only few moments about her, depending on how much Hawke take her at the Act 2. Her conversations with Anders, Fenris for example brilliant, and with Isabela really funny. I was a bit surprised at the Gallows. She was determined and rebellious. I never thought that she likes the Circle (so ridiculous though), but I didn't really expect this:

She afraid from the Templars when the expedition started, and didn't want to stay. I remember, what hard decision was. Kirkwall's more dangerous for an apostate, than the Deep Roads. The Templars there unpredictable and can do anything with mages without any consequences. True, I have a theory, than she was who report herself, because she didn't want to be burden anymore or run away anymore, she's brave and foolish... The best idea to leave her at home, but still hard. (Carver's case is different, he's not a mage, so Kirkwall's not really dangerous to him, and can help to Leandra.)

This is always such a hard question for me. Carver is one of my favorite characters and Bethany barely qualifies as the term character, yet I way prefer playing as a rogue rather than a mage.

I'm not saying it's an easy decision, it was very tough particularly the first time I made it, but the Hawkes have been living in Kirkwall for over a year without incident. It's still dangerous but there is nothing that indicates the Templars know that Beth exists and that she wouldn't be ok for a little bit. Act One Kirkwall Templars aren't as aggressively looking for Mages as Act 2 & 3 Kirkwall Templars. Whereas the Deeproads are crawling with darkspawn, a creature who can kill you by just bleeding on you, even Leandra is worried about what will happen to Beth down there and thinks it is safer for her to stay.

I did a single warrior playthrough and Bethany barely left an impression on me at all. Perfectly pleasant and mediocre and dull. Carver, on the other hand, is the little brother who we all love to hate. He's so interesting and the dynamic between sarcastic mage Hawke and Rival Carver is awesome. I also like him as a templar. It fits his arc so very, very well. You end up with him choosing his brother over Meredith and it's just all the feels. Carver and his arc is one of my favorites in all of DA, to be honest.

I'm constantly surprised by how much we agree now, given how much we used to totally not. It's probably because I don't have to have the old "Righteous Gay Crusader" stick up my ass here. Plus, porn.

I considered Karl's tranquilising a quite unfriendly and dangerous thing, even the fact, that Meredith rule over the city (the guard told, when Hawke family arrived in Kirkwall), and Anders told, that the Circle is a bloody prison. Bethany afraid much more from the tranquility, than the death (Anders' quest). So, I wasn't sure, that Kirkwall's safer... So: as i said, to left Bethany at home is the best solution, because she will be not bitter, but very hard.

I wonder if it was the short development time which prevented Circle!Bethany and Templar!Carver from showing up more in later acts. I mean, Carver especially should have been able to get some leave and be around the city. This is always such a hard question for me. Carver is one of my favorite characters and Bethany barely qualifies as the term character, yet I way prefer playing as a rogue rather than a mage. I prefer playing as mage, but even if I didn't, I would probably force myself to so as to avoid Blandthany and keep Carver's arms. I played way more as a rogue than as a mage, so I saw more of Bethany than Carver, but I find Bethany just... so, so dull. Yeah Carver's arc is more satisfying if he is a templar, IMO, as he's following his namesake's legacy and it's also a big fuck you to mage Hawke by joining the templars. I would have liked there to be more focus on this in later acts, maybe even see Carver regretting his decision once he sees all of the atrocities Meredith's regime has done. But he's kind of like Cullen in that he doesn't show any concern or doubt about the obvious abuse of power until the final showdown.
