I remember reading about their stance on PoE romance awhile back so I went and found it.
“It seemed like it would be weird if romance were never an option for any of these characters,” muses Sawyer.
But like camaraderie, rivalry or seething hate, it’s one of many ways a companion relationship in Pillars 2 can go. Some characters will have romantic inclinations, while others simply aren’t looking for love. Obsidian have felt no obligation to make a certain number or variety of characters romanceable.
“We didn’t want it to be a checklist,” says Sawyer. “We wanted to say, ‘Let’s write the characters and see how they develop, and when it feels like it’s appropriate for a relationship to develop, let’s do that.’”
So basically what palinopsia said.

Tbh there's zero reason for Pillars not to make the companions playersexual. It's not like their sexuality played literally any role before this, and it shouldn't in the future either- just make every companion available for anyone to romance. Make everyone happy. It did though. Well, kind of. I was thinking the same thing before playing White March, but Maneha was gay, and she explicitly stated it. She turned down Kana when he was flirting with her and said she preferred women, and she had a crush on Pallegina that you could ask her about. That means they've set a precedent that companions can be interested in only one gender. Now, to be fair, there was no romance in PoE1 so I guess you could say that Maneha being gay doesn't really mean anything, because the concept of "playersexual" didn't exist in the first game anyway, because there were no romances. But idk... I still really hope the romance options are playersexual, but I feel like charactes will have their own sexualities. And I know Obsidian is all about roleplaying and player choice so one would assume that if there are straight romance options, there are also gay romance options for both male and female players, because that would allow players to roleplay as gay/bi if they want, and that's Obsidian for you, right? I mean, for example in the first game you could actually play as a gay/bi character if you picked the Ixamitl+Philosopher background because in the beginning of the game when Calisca asks you why you came to the Dyrwood, you have the option to mention you used to be married, and the game lets you say "wife" or "husband" for both male and female characters. (That also means gay marriage exists in Ixamitl so yay!) Either way, this means that the game recognizes that you might be playing as a gay character, so it would only be natural to continue that in the second game. But they also said that the whole "deeper companion relationships" thing is supposed to feel organic and true to the characters themselves, so I'm assuming that means that if a character is not interested in romance for whatever reason, they're not going to be a romance option. They're not thinking of it as "2 straight, 2 gay, 2 bi romance options for equal opportunity" or something. I think they're trying to go for "romancing characters is not a mechanic in this game" (probably to avoid backlash from their fans and the game being labeled as a "dating sim" by them) and just making it a part of the normal "deeper companion relationships" mechanic for specific characters. That might leave us players with only straight romance options, assuming there will even be several options. So for example, out of all the companions in the game, say, Edér might be the only "romanceable" character, because he's the only one interested in a romance, because that's part of his character and personality and it's a part of his relationship arc if the player chooses it. And guess what, he's straight. And that's it. Or, maybe he and Pallegina are the only romanceable characters, and they're still both straight. Or whatever. From what they've told us so far, I really got the impression that romances are not, like, a Thing in this game. They're just a natural part of the companion relationships for some characters, if they player so chooses. And I am really worried, because this means there might be no gay romance options in Deadfire. so my point is please Obsidian let me hold Aloth's hand and tell him I love him and that I care about him because he needs to fucking hear it goddamn it let me love this smol mentally ill boi and be there for him The first doesn't have romances right? That is the reason I choose to skip over it even though I am interested in the series. I do plan on playing it eventually.

It's so, so good. You can even convince yourself (if you try hard enough) that it makes sense that there's no romance in this game, because these people have only just met each other and your character is too busy trying not to die or go insane to be thinking about romances. (I still wanted romances tho)

Also there is at least companion quests that help flesh out the characters and establish friendships. Would be a shame to miss it because of no romance!

palinopsia and @kymira Thanks for the recommendation. I will try to pick it up before the second one drops. Does it have a date yet? Also I did hear you can mod in romances. PSN is having a big sale for E3. I finally got XCOM 2. I loved the first one and the new DLC they announced at E3 looks awesome. Supposedly it has enough content to be a solo game. I have wanted 2 for a long time but those games stress me out so much and I heard this one was much more difficult. RIP squadies.

No towers and mini map... not sure what to feel about this. Far Cry 3 had too many of these towers and I hated climbing all of them, but climbing the first few ones were actually quite fun. I hope there is still outpost capture mechanic. It is what makes Far Cry game fun!

I mean what would be the point in this day and age? I would had prefer no romances at all if they go that route. If they do the old "oh Edér is straight because it makes sense" aka paragone of virtude blond guy needs to be straight because that is how a straight guy looks, I will rage. I think Obsidian can do better than this.

*snip* so my point is please Obsidian let me hold Aloth's hand and tell him I love him and that I care about him because he needs to fucking hear it goddamn it let me love this smol mentally ill boi and be there for him I just hope Pallegina is into the female PC but I doubt they will make all the romances straight. If they do the old "oh Edér is straight because it makes sense" aka paragone of virtude blond guy needs to be straight because that is how a straight guy looks, I will rage. I think Obsidian can do better than this. Same, I love Pallegina. I think they wouldn't make her a romance option at all though, she seems... not really into that, at least not at this point in her life. But who knows, she's probably changed in 5 years. Also Edér would be bi at best, because he already stated in-game that he's into women. I could totally see them making Edér bi, but I guess that's probably wishful thinking on my part. I just don't think they're in that mindset? Like, Obsidian can do better than that. There's also the problem of making certain characters gay/bi being "problematic" though. Or at least, many people would call them out on being problematic. Pallegina if she's into women, because of the whole "I have been considered and treated as technically a man my whole life and cannot reproduce" thing. Or Aloth being gay, for example. Problematic as hell. You got childhood abuse (although not sexual - if it is and we just haven't found out about it yet I don't think I can take it tbh, that boy has been through enOUGH OBSIDIAN JUST LET HIM BE) and trauma, mental illness, "effeminate" pretty elf with long hair, female alternate personality, etc. There's also the fact that Iselmyr is also gay (unless I missed something?) which... I feel like they would go "what are the odds" on that one. Both Aloth and his awakened personality are gay? Unless sexuality is like a soul thing? idk The problem is that I'm not sure how they would approach this stuff, if they would risk it. "Is it better to make these characters gay/bi because yay representation, or do these things make it bad representation, and they shouldn't make them gay/bi?" I don't really know how Obsidian would reply. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I guess there could be some issues with making this or that character bi, gay or whatever... still the solution is having a diverse cast. Maybe Aloth could be gay but then Eder needs to be bi, idk they need to find a balance. So it does not look like they are going for stereotypes. Maybe only the new characters are LI? that would solve most problems. but no pallegina
