I don't really know why people are so shocked that a woman has been cast has the Doctor. Gender switching has been canon for a while, Mofat once wrote a Dr Who spoof where the Dr regened into Joanna Lumley and then the Master switched gender, it has seemed like it was on the cards for a while now.

Not to mention that both Tom Baker AND Syndy Newman, the creator of the show, have both suggested it as early as the 80s.
But I get why there's controversy -- I mean, there's ALWAYS controversy when there's a new Doctor cast, even when it's a white guy. When Matt Smith was cast there was a lot of "eew, too young, I can't buy him as the Doctor!" When Capaldi was cast, there was a lot of "eew, too old, he can't physically do what the Doctor can do!"
It's a little more controversy than usual, sure, but given half a season or so the majority of the fans warm up to the new Doctor. Sure, there's always outliers, but they're frankly too few and far in between to really notice.

Yeah, I'm hoping that now that he's taking a break from the Arrowverse, Jack might be able to come back to Who, at least for an episode or two. We NEED to see his reaction to Thirteen.
