I like the party banter. Davrin so far seems to get along with everyone I've used with him-which is nearly everyone I think. He does seem to be a bit leary of Emmirch-but still talks friendly with him. lol

Finally I got to play the game for a decent amount of time.
I am quite happy with how my Rook looks.
I could not make my Inquisitor age gracefully, so I am not showing his photos here. Combats (mage + staff) are mixed bags to me. I like the fluidity, the pace and the move sets, but the encounters are a bit too simple and repetitive even at underdog difficulty so far. And I miss having many spells as a mage. The art style and the graphics look greater than the trailers led me to believe. So, it's enjoyable experience so far.

In a rolling stone article, the creative director reconfirmed there is no plans for dlc right now for Veilguard and that the team has moved on to work on the next mass effect game, article also talks about why 2 companions in combat, multiplayer change, etc: www.rollingstone.com/culture/rs-gaming/dragon-age-the-veilguard-john-epler-interview-1235147001/Anyway back to game experience:farferello I ended up being stuck with the blood dragon outfit for a while cuz the veil jumpers one I didn't like the colors and then you are barefoot which made no sense in a lot of moments XD. But yeah I just experienced those first moments with Lucanis, he's a great interesting character so far! Spoiler on a Lucanis flirt:
the coffee flirts were so nice. Talking about a coffee that tastes like first kiss. I also liked that you get to explore if your Rook has had a lot of lovers or practically none, or been a long time, get to decide how experienced or inexperienced he is. Which is rare to establish in a game. I chose it was his same type of coffee lucanis like cuz I don't drink coffee so I DONT KNOW OKAY hahaha. Here's the little bit flirt scene for anyone curious that still on the fence of the game but want to see the flirt scene me and far are talking about so much:
THERE WAS A VERY ANNOYING SHADOW IN THE SCENE THOUGH ON MY FACE, ahem but yeah cute
I did end up finding too high level enemies in the crossroads and had to run away but there is a lot of lore to discover in the crossroads that's not like marked, it just pops when you find it regarding history there and includes cutscenes so I recommend exploring it at least once. mediocreogre hahaha sounds like it was a fun wedding at least! My character going to drink a lot of beer once is all over im sure and let himself go haha. But yeah hope you have fun with the game! I focused a lot on doing the side stuff for everyone before i move on to the story, also checking out everyone in the lighthouse after every mission cuz theres usually at least one companion with something new to say. I'll have to check well how I am doing with my companions influence though haven't even seen that yet haha. But yeah only gotten up to Lucanis still. I'm a turtle playing so far. And sadly I work tomorrow all day so mostly have today to play a bit. Has for the combat I'm mixed on it, I like it a lot but it also gets repetitive, specially in the crossroads if you decide to explore them. I try a few new thing but until you really max out more theres not much you can explore. But I like how fluid it feels and has its moments, but yeah I don't like that I feel I have to command my companions so much, it works like the guardians of the galaxy rpg game eidos did which was a really great story game but the combat was just fine. At the same time, I never been crazy about any dragon age combat, but I enjoy that I at least can aim with a bow now instead of the game just auto aiming every bow action in previous games, so I do feel I am actually doing the combat this time, but I get lazy XD. I started on the normal difficulty I think then i got hit so hard on the opening I immediately switched to easy but not full story mode, just to see and im okay with it now. But yes enemies seem to heavenly go after you no matter the combat style, we need proper commands to make companions tank essentially, since we have some for healing. I did discover that pushing off an important boss/npc off the map will auto kill him and progress the story so that was nice skipped a whole life bar there to take down haha. On companion banter not too crazy about it so far but I am missing a lot of companions. I did get harding and lucanis talk a fair bit and bellaris really asks a lot of questions lol but nothing has quite yet peaked my interest, but also I do have the problem that if I toward some objective i get the conversation cut because another dialogue line needs triggering. I think in terms of the art style, I do personally enjoy it a lot, and wouldn't mind a full bioware ip series in this art style, the problem is that is using an existing universe and when the "old" characters return they don't transition well, but if I ignore that, I really love this art style and I really appreciate it more as I see everyone's rooks. Also mind you we need more short haircuts for men because I feel a lot use the same ones lol. I think what I am enjoying the most is Rook as a whole, just has a lot of personality that sure might be in part scripted but you still get to develop a lot of his background, the little bit for example when you go to your quarters in the lighthouse was a nice thing. In one of those scenes is where you can also establish your character is trans (the one that has certain gamers raging lol) and is a nice way to acknowledge it in game and not just on a creator. There's just enough things to sprinkle him/her. For my rook I have made him a bit impulsive wreckless at times but ultimately means well, he's also very emotional. I didn't want him to be just straightforward goody two shoes, so he might make mistakes from emotions like one early village scene choice: I left the mayor there because my Rook was pissed for what he did. Had he not let his initial emotions get the better off him he might have given him a chance. You can also talk about this choice with Varric when you visit him so be sure to do that if you haven't.

I've made more progress, finally did Neve's quest bits. I also found the game doesn't always alert you if a character has a conversation for you to witness. It doesn't always show on the map but I did notice when I ran into Neve starting a conversation, the little lantern outside of her room was lit up. Who knows how many conversations I missed because of this. :/ The game wants me to go and get Davrin but I am grinding out some resources and I need to go and unlock another blighted gateway in the Crossroads. Hopefully I'm better equipped to fight this Revenant than I was the last. To those of you who have hit level 20. Did you reset your points so you could focus getting to your specialization or did you keep what you had? I beelined my way to the Spellblade tree so it was ready, and then I was just unlocking random passives to boost my damage. I might hold onto my next few points but I can't decide if I should respec or not when I reach that point. The only thing I don't like about combat is when it wants me to spam button combos to perform some ability. I'm not playing Street Fighter, I don't want to have to press multiple buttons, multiple times, just to throw a knife at someone. Also I looked at Neve's ice spells now she's no longer stuck at 1 and wow I really miss some of the ice spells from DA:I.

I kept going with points for a while, but over all I have reset all my abilities a lot of times. I've tried all 3 specializations now officially. I have ended up liking the necromancer one best thus far. I would probably like the evoker best, but I can't seem to get combos to work properly with it's main attack. -shrug- I tried the melee one the least amount of time, cause honestly I just didn't get what it brought to the table at all...so might need to try it again later on.

I'm so glad my PC was able to run this game. I am hooked. So hooked. It's been a lot of fun so far. I love that it's not open world and more focused on the story. On Lucanis: Very early, after recruiting/first companion quest. I love a man that loves his coffee. That was such a cute "date". I agree with Scottphoto that I love that you are able to choose if your Rook has had many lovers or none. I chose to play my guy as a young, inexperienced virgin and Lucanis' response was really sweet. Seriously, Lucanis is so much hotter and better than I thought. Being able to see him in action instead of just screenshots has won me over. He's like a less hot Blackwall, but that's OK with me. And OMG is his brother Ilario also hot or what?! I'm looking forward to seeing where his story goes. I'm happy that he's so much more interesting than I thought. Varric rant. OMG I am so sick of them trying to push Varric as the "hero" and that our Rook "admires" him. I DO NOT NEED VARRIC'S MIRROR IN MY ROOM, THANK YOU VERY MUCH BIOWARE. Seriously annoyed with the characters acting like they couldn't complete their mission without him and they try to make him seem like the most important guy in the world.
I will admit though that I like his narrations. Reminds me of DA2, and it's no secret that I LOVE DA2.
I just hope they don't force him in as the "hero" in the end. As far as combat goes, I can't say I'm a fan of it and the hack-and-slash nature of it. I miss the tactical combat of Origins. I'm still pretty bad at it, but I think I'll manage to get through just fine. I was mostly annoyed that we couldn't be a full archer as a rogue and that arrows were limited. With some upgrades though it's been a little easier to focus on archery. Arrows don't run out as fast as they did earlier and replenish more quickly. I'm most likely sticking with Lucanis/Harding as my companions. It's really annoying we can't have a third companion when the intro has three people following you. I'm trying to complete all the side quests before moving on with the main quests, so it might be a while before I meet the last three companions.

Uh oh. I now have both Lucanis and Davrin and they are both really great. What does it say about how we've been treated as a demographic that I'm giddy over just have two good options. I was fully going into this planning for Davrin, but Lucanis is....kind of smoking hot. And I love a man who loves coffee. But then also, hot elven warrior who is a griffon dad? How do I not go for that? I think I'm going to let this one just play out. I did a similar thing in BG3 on my first playthrough where I fully intend to go for Halsin but then Wyll came in a swept me off my feet. I genuinely don't know which guy I'll go for on this run.

I'm having fun with the Decor system though I do wish there were a few more spaces for decorations in Rook's room. I also love that you can completely change the look of your home base with the themes you can buy. I've picked up Davrin and did his little quest with Assan and I'm doing a few other side quests before I continue. My team is now Lucanis, and Davrin, though I might swap Davrin out for Bellara again now and then just because her banter with Lucanis about a book series they're both into is pretty adorable. They both get so excited about it.

You'd think I might like this combat system as a fan of action rpgs and parrying mechanics in particular.... but I don't like it at all. 2h warrior is kinda dorky and not satisfying at all. If this is how God of War plays, no wonder I haven't played that.
Either gonna re roll a mage or just play story mode. Everything else is fine.

I made it to act 2...that quest seemed to have gone extremely different from what they showed in the preview events...unless they Frankenstiened several things together (which is highly possible).

I took a video of a non-spoilery romance banther (Davrin Talking to Emmirch). It's rather cute. The video quality isn't great since I just had to snag it at the shit angle it was in when it triggered, but it's that or nothing.

farferello I did end up bee lining to my specialization once I saw I was close to 20 as well but I also did because I read your post haha. I am pretty happy with the combat now though, I managed a good balance of strong arrows but also strong knife attacks so I can change to either style very fluidly. But I do wish doing the special attacks felt easier at least in controller. I do end up finding pausing to activate more useful than just trying to execute it by holding 2 buttons. Also how did you change the lights on the lighthouse??? I only know the stuff in our room and the statue in the middle outside. Andrew Mancer Regarding coffee scene: Yep, that was really special getting to really establish that. Honestly, I battled with the choice if to make him inexperienced virgin or not because while I think is true for my rook, I also think he would lie and not say that just straight up and just say its been a while. Because that's what I would do haha. The truth can be revealed later. I do think Lucanis has taken many by surprise, and specially tempting for those having to wait for Davrin haha. I think ultimately haven't met all companions now though, I think for this Rook Lucanis will be his main, there's just a bit more chemistry between them. But ill still treat myself with some Davrin flirts to try him out a bit. Regarding Varric Lol, honestly was a bit surprised with him getting stabbed in the opening, as they did not show that in the gameplay teaser. I really thought he was killed but he was not. I personally don't mind him having the role he has in the game but it is weird hes alone doing this, instead of the inquisitor or hawke leading this, but maybe we see that get explained later. But I am glad he's not a full companion at least. daveliam1 yea same I did with bg3 with wyll and halsin im doing here with lucanis and Davrin haha. But my bg3 character is problematic horny, cuz he also banged the emperor for science, and a demon, and.... a couple of others. Rook on the other hand is just shy boy trying to get someone. Lee im very interested to see how that thing goes down given yeah the released footage was edited and we see this also with even the opening of the game having a few edits. Is there like a clear "this is act 2" title somewhere? Like ill know when it begins? That's very nice that your companions react to the romance! I think for me, this game is closer to DA2 in a good way as it is my favorite haha. The bi romances for example, is nice to have all the choices and just pick whatever I feel flows best with the Rook I'm playing instead of having the one choice and then that's it for a run, instead I can think of multiple possible runs. The factions also help with this, I like that Rook, has a lot of defined traits but they can be done based on your faction choice and then you can explore a bit through dialogue branches, which ultimately is how Hawke felt defined and how his class would define a bit his conflicts if you pick him as mage or templar. I feel the inquisitor was too much of a blank slate that I don't really know his backstory, only his moment to moment story. The things that hold it back a bit for me is the art style, is quite beautiful and I love Rook's design but it still feels a bit jarring to go from the first 3 games style to this one. If it was a purely spin off game and not a follow up to the inquisition story then I think the art style would not be as striking issue. But I am getting pretty used to it by now. Potentially it could be my 2nd favorite or favorite DA but that will largely depend on the execution of the next acts, but the potential is there, let's see if it sticks the landing for me. If you all wondering where are the skimpy outfits, the lords of the fortune got you covered . I do want to try and do a montage of some of the nice outfits in case anyone wants to preview some and where to get since I haven't seen a guide yet but will see if I get some time, but I been grinding the factions to get many outfit options to try.

There is no Act system really. I just meant I made it to the end of what they were calling the act 1 portion of the game back during the preview event. The game has a very odd pacing in that way. It is a bit like ME2 though in the fact you just need to do side quests before you do the obviously marked main quest(s). I haven't had anything canceled out from progressing the story, but I've heard some can be. -shrug- I found a list, but it's just companion stuff and I always do those first anyway.

Scottphoto The lights are part of the Antivan theme I used. It changes everything both inside and outside of the Lighthouse. Lots of statues everywhere and the pretty lights. Every faction has a Theme when you get their shop upgraded. Lee That's such a cute vid, I love that there's banter about the romances, it really felt like that was lacking in DA:I outside of Varric making things awkward usually. I've been making slow progress, I keep exploring and throwing myself at quests I shouldn't be doing yet (hello level 50 enemy) but I finally picked up all the companions. Emmrich is really sweet and he and my Crow Rook have had some fun conversations about Crow activity. I also love playing rock paper scissors with Mannfred. Rook always seems to lose. Currently I'm in the Wetlands area working on Grey Warden blight stuff. Also I'm deeply amused there's an achievement for testing for fall damage in the Lighthouse. Just yeeting yourself off the balcony in nostalgia for always landing on Solas's head.

I've been keeping track of my various thoughts in my happenings of Veilguard over on my Tumblr - see here. It's been fun so far - I'd say I'm probably somewhere in the middle of the second act-ish? I have gathered all the companions and have gone through the siege of Weisshaupt.
I actually had to redo the big decision point there, mostly because I'd initially started off with talking down the First Warden, but then Davrin disapproved, so...
Punching assholes for my boyfriend. Just Rook Things.

I'm just about to do the Siege of Weisshaupt quest. I've been pretty slow as I've spent a lot of time exploring and loot farming for valuables. I finally got my Workshop to level 7... or 8? I don't remember. I really wish it was easier to find/buy doubles of things you already have so you could upgrade and unlock the bonuses on things more easily than relying on rng. My build is very glass cannon and I have a chest piece that would be perfect for it but only once I unlock the bonuses and I just never seem to find the item. Come on game, I'm already running a low health build, how about you be nice and give me those bonuses to make my auto crits even tastier.
I also wish the specialization abilities weren't so level gated. I'm level 34 and there's nothing really for me to put points into anymore, until I hit 40 and the others unlock. I either hold onto them or just put them wherever as I have most of the skills outside of the specialization ones, that I need.

Lucanis's romance is killing me. I expected slow burn because of everything but I'd describe it more as non existent in the early stages. I finally got to the point in game where he suddenly wakes up and shows interest but idk how I feel about it.
I take a flirt after another incident with Spite and suddenly he acknowledges the flirt but not only that, he sidles up to do that smooth as fuck 'lean a hand against a wall boxing you in move' which honestly looked silly with my Qunari. Then we go from utterly oblivious and no flirt acknowledging until this moment to an almost kiss before he pulls away suddenly and my Qunari is left looking depressed. I was fine with it being slow burn because of Spite and his trust issues but I wasn't expecting the romance to be 'ignores and doesn't acknowledge any flirts whatsoever' to 'suddenly putting the moves on you with an almost kiss' it's like Bull's romance where he straight up ignores all your flirts until he shows up in your room unannounced but worse in some ways. I'm hoping I get a few more flirts after this and that he doesn't just go back to ignoring me for another 30 hours. Gotta give him props for trying to pull this move off on someone who is like two feet taller than him. His bond has the heart symbol so I'm guessing there's something there now. Even if I did have to play almost 50 hours to get this far.

Wandering around arlarhan forest and it’s kinda uncomfortably obvious they drew a lot of inspiration from the Southern Reach books and the 2018 movie adaptation: annihilation.
Not complaining but it’s kinda funny to wonder what elf things would have been designed like with out that movie coming out. Which is a shame cause Jilly Main isn’t as interesting thus far as she could be but maybe Jilly gets better and can stand on her own 30 tentacle feet. Like they imitated good dna cosmic horror but Jilly Main just feels like Corypheus in a hentai phase.
