I think they have talked about some romances possibly changing gender between time frames, exploring how that can impact and change a relationship, though didn't when one of the writers came in here and did a brief AMA... Yeah, let me pull up the quote from her response to my question about how reincarnations romances would work... Yeah, that's exactly what I'm afraid of. Sorry, but I'm not interested in initiating a m/m gay romance, only to have them reincarnate as a woman later. Or do a lesbian romance, only for them to return as a man. I'm not interested in the relationship change/impact being, "Lol your gay romance is straight now." It's totally cool if they're a different person as far as their personality and history and so on, but if they swap genders as well, I'm out haha.
I know the lead writer has done a lot of AMAs, here and on Twitter, insisting that she's queer also and understands how we've all been burned and wouldn't do that in her own game. But after the whole Lugaid kerfluffle, and how snappy she got at me on Twitter when I asked for clarification on him ("We already resolved this days ago. Fine. He's not straight anymore." ??? Sorry for asking? I can't be plugged into the internet all day every day.), I'm not believing anything until I see it in the game lol. We'll See (tm).
Sorry for coming in to rant about old drama, folks!
Imagine the manbaby tears if there was a case of 'your straight romance is gay now' What happened with Lugaid? I'm a bit out of the loop (Lugaid is the pretty boy prince, right?)

Imagine the manbaby tears if there was a case of 'your straight romance is gay now' What happened with Lugaid? I'm a bit out of the loop (Lugaid is the pretty boy prince, right?) I believe the situation was that Lugaid had been initially presented as being straight, but that was really only if you the player had flirted with his mother, the Queen, so it was going to be a pleasant surprise if, for example, you were playing a gay male character, so not flirting with women at all. You know how all those BioWare quotes about "discover for yourself" with romances, completely missing the point of why queer players were asking? It'd be like that, only in the way that allows queer players to actually discover a queer romance, rather than get shot down by yet another straight-gate. But when there was concern from queer people who were watching the feeds for news, the surprise got outed early to set those concerns at ease. At least, that's my memory of things from... I want to say it was last October or so. Anyway, I'm kinda interested in the gender-bending thing across timeframes. When you make souls a firm part of your setting, it opens up some interesting stories that I've poked around exploring myself in my own writings - I have one big project that I want to get off the ground some day that does involve past lives, but since I'd also be exploring the idea of reincarnated lovers and whether or not they're attracted to each other because their past lives were, adding gender changes to things felt like it'd be too many plates spinning for me. But the idea still was percolating in the back of my mind, so seeing this take is intriguing for me. Are you going to maintain a relationship across the timelines? Can or even should you, considering the vast differences that a person goes through in those gaps? With the addition of characters who are immortal, it adds an extra wrinkle to things as well. It's just a set up that I find nifty and interesting to explore, and, unlike BioWare, I feel like there's at least a desire and intent to be upfront and honest with queer players specifically.

Yeah that was what happened with Lugaid pretty much. I must admit that I dont care about him since he's not an official companion lol I really have some kind of allergies to romances that are not companions *shrugs* I like the concept of reincarnations as well, it has a lot of story-telling potential. The game has been very open about it so choosing mortals as starting romance option is on you guys Bi players are going to be the real winners here haha

I don't have a problem with the gender shifting element. It sounds like an interesting idea if it's done right. I just hope they make things relatively equal between male and female characters, since we already have more female than male romance options. So far we have:
Companions: 4 female, 3 male, 1 NB, 1 Agender NPCs: 2 female, 1 male Total: 6 female, 4 male, 1 NB, 1 Agender
We know that Berath, Delba and Nazhedja are immortal and Amergin isn't dead at this point. We also know that at least one of the companions won't be available in the other timeline. My quess is that's Trasté. Maybe goblins won't be reborn and we get another genderqueer character instead.
I also have a feeling Brigg will remain NB, but with a masculine body next time, so that genderqueer people have a returning romance option as well. As for the male characters, only Heraklios and Lugaid can change their gender. We already have more female love interests than male ones, so I hope only one of them changes his gender. I have a feeling it'will be Heraklios who might become a feminine woman next time. As for the female characters, I think Khaldun and Rea will remain the same gender and Mal and Tiana become male. This is just speculation at this point, though.

And of course, all of that break down of things ALSO depends on the depth of each romance - I would expect that the companions have more to their romances by virtue of being part of the party, rather than NPCs, which may well also impact how much of a continuing romance they offer.

Given the current Steam sale, I decided I'd go ahead and buy the game now (because discount!) and wait to install it. So, technically, I now COULD play if I so wanted to.
Probably still wait some more for more bugs to get worked out and all, but, hey. The important thing is that I COULD start playing if I so choose.

I'm not a fan of gender swap timey whimey hijinks.
I get that it's an interesting narrative device and also allows for you to date a different character in the second time era...but like I'd find it far more interesting to see how a character could grow as a new person and still be a m/m romance option...not the alternative.
I'm glad Amergin will probably be my favorite and is in both timelines, but I really hope Heraklios doesn't gender swap. He is very attractive. /shallow Lee

(snip) What happened with Lugaid? I'm a bit out of the loop (Lugaid is the pretty boy prince, right?) Others have mostly explained it! But. Initially, he was revealed as straight. Some people expressed disappointment over this, myself included -- for a variety of reasons. Some folks were disappointed there was a straight option at all, considering all the companions thus far had been bi. A lot of folks from here were angry, because the lead writer had been vocal about equality in the game, but now we had a straight dude and no strictly gay characters. Some people were upset because they weren't into the other male romance options (they're all buff guys and bears! haha) and got hopeful for him. And so on.
Then the lead writer hopped in and made a comment along the lines of, "Well. He's not completely straight. ))))"
That just set off a whole chain reaction where people went from upset to outright angry. It came across as queerbaiting, especially since we're all tired of male romance options where they're basically straight and you're the only man they're into, or they're bi but only talk about being into women, and so on.
The writer seemed really baffled that people were THAT upset over the whole thing. And then had to spoil that he's only straight if you're a man and you flirt with his mom, and it was meant to be a nice surprise / reward to romance him if you had left his mom alone.
Unfortunately, that reveal by the lead writer apparently happened here on these forums, where I hadn't visited in a while, and wasn't anywhere visibly on Twitter. So when I asked for clarification on Twitter, she got really snappy with me for asking when it had already been resolved. I had no idea, and had to come over here to find it. :/ Ah well.
Water under the bridge at this point, but that's why I'm a little gunshy about the timeskip thing. We already got queerbaited once.
Also, I'm definitely interested in the concept of souls and reincarnation as well! As a storytelling thing, that's one of my absolute favorite tropes, especially in a fantasy setting like this where you can really push the supernatural element of it. It's just specifically the reincarnating as a different gender thing I'm ehhh about because of romances. If there weren't romances, I wouldn't care about it at all, ahaha.

Fair enough - I get that as a factor and all. Not judging or anything here.
Given that there are a couple of immortals in the mix as well, I'm mollified by it, but I get that it's not to everyone's taste for playing through. Just... Eh. I'm comfortable enough with everything, and I'm cool with exploring the questions it raises about love and romance in general. I get no one's gonna change their minds and tastes here - I think we're all pretty dug in to our positions. But I am interested in this question and from this stance of it being your partner who is changing or reidentifying, like I'm seeing it as paralleling (imperfect metaphor ahead) your partner coming out as trans/non-binary, and how you're going to choose to navigate the relationship from that point, on how that impacts and alters your relationship with someone who you love, but to be true to themselves, they are going to be transitioning to someone who may not be the same as you thought you were going to be attracted to.
I see it as questioning the nature of love - romantic, sexual, platonic, etc. - by having your partner changing who they are, and are you still going to have that same kind of love for them, and, if you don't, that love can still be valid, even if it's different. I don't know if I've been able to word how I'm approaching it and eager for it right, but... Like I said, it interests me.

Emily and Sergio Prieto are doing live streaming right now steamcommunity.com/broadcast/watch/76561198002015683I asked them if the body types are going to be locked to classes and they said as I imagined that yes, because of lack resources, each class has their armours and it would be cost money to make them available for all, remember that they are a 40 people team, still an indie studio. But they are going to try to add more faces in the final release so fingers crossed! Expect character development for Lugaid, not surprised but it's nice to hear. Emily is talking about that there wont be ninjamancing in the game, if we see something weird talk directly to her to let her know edt. I dont think Berath's animal companion has a role in the story and he has a panther now, it seems is final so good bye wolf T_T

So with the newer patch I made a new character to test things out... I think I'll wait a few more patches before I try again. I still get the same broken quests from prior to this patch so those aren't fixed. A shame because it means I can't complete two of the three available quests. Ones Boss still goes invincible part way through the fight (he also hits like a truck and all my attacks just tickle him) and the end Boss for another quest just crashes the game at the end so I can't complete it. I also got a fatal error that crashed the game, when I was trying to equip companions. On the plus side, formations feel easier to make work now, so trying them out on different classes was kinda fun, and they fixed it so you actually get to choose your party properly rather than being stuck with early companions that you shouldn't even have at that point.
