There is no reasoning with him. I've tried. He is so stubborn and dislikes anything that threatens his Federation Utopia. That DS9 arc about Paradise Lost... Oh boy, that triggers my bf so hard. I have to watch it in private with headphones and the door locked. That is fuckin hilarious!! I love that whole arc! It is okay. He doesn't know what a rancor or a tauntaun is, so I flip out on him. We are mega nerds.

I will go first (unless someone else does!) 1. Favorite series is definitely Deep Space Nine. I grew up watching Next Generation, and sure, I loved Picard, Troi, and Data, but I was a teenager during DS9, and I came of age admiring Captain Benjamin Sisko and ESPECIALLY Lieutenant Jadzia Dax. Dax was a very special character for me; she was basically genderless and just enjoying her time in whatever body she happened to be in. "I forgot how long it takes to get ready as a woman!" she says at one point. And Sisko, the toughest, baddest captain, a very complicated man, warm and loving towards his family and beloved friends, stern when he's crossed and standing up for what's right, also a very open-minded man. Of course I loved all the other characters, especially Garak... can't beat Garak, really, or his totally canonical crush on Bashir. I loved how the space station was like a family; it was very different from the episodic nature of the previous series. 2. Favorite captain though is probably Katherine Janeway. The actor complaiend that Janeway was inconsistent; they wanted her to be motherly and sweet for the first few seasons, but she rebelled and chose to play her as tougher towards the end. I felt Janeway was always both of those things and more. Of course it was thrilling to see a female captain. But her gender played no role in who she was as a person and as a captain. She had the toughest job out of any of the captains, too. 3. Favorite character is without a doubt Tuvok. Vulcans are my favorite race in the franchise, but Tuvok is more than just a stereotypical Vulcan; he's a true and loving friend, as well as a loving father and husband, loyal to his family to the end. He has difficulty making friends with the rest of the crew; people tend to be put off by his serious nature, and though he says this doesn't bother him (since, you know, feelings and all that), I think he is displeased with he realizes people don't like or appreciate him or his point of view. I think of him as my true space husband, forever and ever; if I could find a guy like Tuvok it would be the bestest, plus we'd only have to have sex once every seven years! I could handle that oh wow, i really love your descriptions. i feel about Janeway the same way, and i much prefer her when she gets shit done, gets sassy and uncompromising but has always a warm side for those she deems worthy. if i would be forced to choose a role model i think it would be her- disciplined, idealistic fighter and leader, has emotions but does not dwell etc. it's a bit weird, with men their gender is not in question, they can be leaders, but with women everything gets scrutinized doubly. i'm happy how many times voyager proved this is nonsense and i'm a bit appalled to see how many times women there lead serious conversations about science and nature of existence, and compare it to contemporary television. yes, a show from 97 is still more progressive than mainstream today even in this basic area as gender. ugh Okay fellow nerds I'm gonna make/eat dinner, do a few things around the house, then start TNG. I'll make a thread for episode discussions.

Wow I would totally be mutual besties with both of you. My brother-in-law is super in SW thankfully and I have a friend who loves ST though not as much as me.

@artemis my dad is a Trekkie, stepdads are LOTR nerd and a Trekkie, bf is a Trekkie, best friend is a SW fanboy, and I'm a SW fanboy. My poor mother is like...such a Muggle I feel bad for her at events where we are all together. My brother is a sport guy 100% and I honestly think he was raised by somebody else because no one in three generations of my family are even remotely sports people. Usually, the nerds are the rebels in the family but not mine. Hahahaha

@artemis if you are doing a series re-watch, how many episodes per evening/week are you watching? I don't want to get too far behind.

THESE ARE THE VOYAGES... Discuss all things Star Trek here!! - Favorite series?
- Favorite captain?
- Favorite character?
I'm terrible at naming favourites, since I like different things equally for different reasons. Also, I did most of my Trek watching (besides youtube clips and some movies recently) when I was a kid, so... my memory is a little foggy Favourite series: Toss-up between TNG and Voyager. Favourite Captain: ♫ Jean-Luc Picard, of the USS Enterprise ♫ He's definitely a role model. Picard Day is real. I like Janeway too, though. So catchy. Favourite character: Data! Him and Picard together results in much awesome, as well. Them talking about life, the universe, and everything, or morality... it just makes me sad that shows are no longer like this. it's a bit weird, with men their gender is not in question, they can be leaders, but with women everything gets scrutinized doubly. i'm happy how many times voyager proved this is nonsense and i'm a bit appalled to see how many times women there lead serious conversations about science and nature of existence, and compare it to contemporary television. yes, a show from 97 is still more progressive than mainstream today even in this basic area as gender. ugh Yes, sadly this is true both in fiction and out of it. Hopefully I won't derail the thread, but I think characters like Rey in TFA are treated much more harshly because they're women. It's ridiculous And I couldn't agree more about serious conversations, with women and men alike! Why can't we have another show that actually talks deeply about concepts?

Unfortunately I have the same complains, most shows are really lacking when it comes to scifi. Dark Matter and The Expanse are good but still have that dark edgy vibe. I am hoping the new Star Trek tv series that is in works comes back to those concepts. The peak of it was during the 80s and 90s, now it is all doom and gloom.

Star Trek thread! Woo! --- Favorite series: TNG, with DS9 a very close second. It's like comfort food for the soul. Favorite captain: Sisko. As much as I love Picard, something about Sisko feels a little more...grounded to me. Favorite character: Worf. I like how he's an interesting take on the hardassed rule-abiding paragon trope: a Federation citizen who takes Klingon virtues and ideals more seriously than many "true" Klingons do. --- I hope the new series is good; it'd be great to see more optimistic sci-fi on TV. I just fear that they'll make it unrelentingly dark and gritty and end up failing to capture Star Trek's spirit in the process. This is why I enjoyed Beyond much more than Into Darkness; STID was really dark visually and thematically, and it just left me feeling dreary and fatigued. Beyond definitely had flaws, yes, but IMO it did a much better job portraying the bright, colorful, optimistic future I associate with Star Trek.

I liked Beyond the best our of the new movies, for the same reasons. It felt the most Treky. And I feel like this track encapsulated the Star Trek/Federation feel very well. Plus, even if it was a minor appearance, there was actually a gay couple in it! I hope that's something the new series incorporates, since it wasn't touched on much in, say, TNG, even if it was ahead of its time.

BansheeOwnage Agreed - Beyond is my favorite too. I especially liked how it felt like everyone got something to do, instead of reducing many crew members to window dressing like some other Trek films have. Which meant that Anton Yelchin as Chekov got a proper send off. :crying: I'll admit, I grinned ear-to-ear when I saw that Sulu had a husband and daughter. A handsome gay family man who's also a starship pilot?

Favorite series?
"Deep Space 9" I just really enjoy almost all the characters and the story lines were all top notch. Kira, Odo, Sisko, Dax, and Julian are all super dear to me. Oh and Quark is just amazing!
Favorite captain?
Benjamin Sisko is amazing. I loved his story arc of being the Emmisary and Bajor's religion was far more fascinating to me then most made up religions in works of fiction.
Favorite character?
This one is harder than the first 2. It's hard to pick a favorite, but I think Deanna Troi is my favorite. I love the concept of empaths, and I just felt like I wanted to be her really bad for some reason. -shrug- Next Generation is quite a good show!

Oh geez... right away with the hard questions.
I suppose for me it's "my first is the best." I was introduced to Star Trek by my mother when I was a wee lass, with the movie Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (we affectionately call it Star Trek and the Whales to this day).
Favorite series? The Original Series. I recently watched the entire run in honor of the 50th anniversary, with accompanying viewing of the Animated Series as well. It's full of tropes and sexism, and sometimes just plain ridiculousness and stupidity, but I love it. There are quite a few great moments.
I suppose my favorite component of the series, as well as its six movies, is the relationship between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. They balance each other out, and compliment each other. Spock is the logic, while McCoy is the emotion, and Kirk often sits back while they go back and forth, and then makes the decision as captain.
Favorite captain? Continuing on with the theme, I will say Kirk, but I like movie Kirk just a bit better because he's older. The episodes I like the best are when he's in Serious Captain Mode, with perhaps Balance of Terror (S1) showing this the best out of all episodes. This isn't the typical, idealistic Star Trek episode, but a WWII-style submarine hunt, with two equally skilled captains pitted against each other. A lot of that skill and competency is overshadowed by the skirt-chasing of later episodes.
Favorite character? This is difficult. When I was young, I was insane over both Scotty and Worf. Now that I'm older, I really appreciate Spock a lot more and all of the great nuance that Leonard Nimoy put into the character. There are little things, facial expressions, that show he's not truly an emotionless monolith.

A handsome gay family man who's also a starship pilot? The "For Anton" at the end... And Leonard Nimoy I agree about the script and I think Simon Pegg co-writing it was a great choice. Ha, handsome gay starship pilot, eh? *Looks at Poe avatar* I also like pilots. My dad's a pilot. First time I flew a plane was when I was 4! With his help, of course. It's an amazing feeling. Favorite character? This one is harder than the first 2. It's hard to pick a favorite, but I think Deanna Troi is my favorite. I love the concept of empaths, and I just felt like I wanted to be her really bad for some reason. -shrug- Next Generation is quite a good show! Being an empath would certainly be interesting, though depending on if you can "turn it off", quite horrible really. Oh geez... right away with the hard questions. to psychotically answer myself- 1- i really really dislike new kirk movies, the cast is attractive(not that it really matters, but i'm trying to say something positive about it. cgi is also nice) but films completely fail to catch the spirit of star trek to me. when i was watchig the latest one (with idris alba as a villain) my eye-rolling rate was once or twice a minute i think. 2- i don't know what to expect from the new series really. in general i hate prequels, i want things moving forward. also, i consider TNG state of technology a minimum prerequisite to make me enjoy star trek. that's why i never really got into archer series. god knows i like that hunk scott bacula, but by the maker, people were basically traveling in a shoe-box though space in that series and it sucked -.- but what i'm afraid the most is that the series will lose their episodic nature, philosophical approach and idealism. don't get me wrong, the show should evolve and trends today are different but i hope they manage to make it unique somehow, otherwise it's just same shit in different skin.

extra questions: 1- what do you guys think about the new reboot kirk movies? 2- what are your expectations from the new series coming this fall? (might be delayed again, didn't check) 1 I have no interest in seeing the new reboots. It's just not my Star Trek. Since they're in this alt universe, with different happenings, it just seems divorced from everything I know about Trek. I'm also not crazy about Chris Pine as Kirk. Who I can see playing Kirk is Chris Pratt, but the ship has sailed for that, sadly, but at least we still get him in Guardians and the Jurassic World movies. But it seems like they are going for a different type of Kirk in these movies anyway, rather than the roguish swagger of the original. 2 I'll catch the premier when it airs on CBS, but I'm not going to pay for their online streaming, so I won't be able to watch it. What does interest me is the slightly different format of following a Lt. Commander, who is a black woman, and having the show be from HER POV. That is quite refreshing. I also know that there will be an openly gay character, so I'm curious to see how they handle that. Other than those two things, I don't really know anything about it. As long as they explore, meet new aliens, and continue parading Trek's positive vision of the future (which finally includes gay people), with some humor and crew camaraderie along the way, I think it should be decent to good Trek.

not really a proper replacement for trek but i love parodies and this looks promising (it might devolve into being serious and drama, humor based shows tend to do that)

Although Seth McFarlane has a tendency to be very inconsistent with his jokes in my opinion. Nevertheless I'm looking forward to this, he is a very big Star Trek fan so he might know exactly to parody it in the 'right' way.
