Where is the DS9 love? I'm gonna sit here all by myself and reminisce at the long story arcs, the darker tones, the beauty of the Defiant and very confusing thoughts a teenage me had for Jadzia Dax.

Are you kidding? DS9 is my favorite Star Trek! It gave such more insight into the Star Trek universe and personally I really loved how it gave more depth to the Federation in general and put the Federation truly in peril through conflict and war. This quote from Captain Sisko: "Do you know what the trouble is? The trouble is Earth. On Earth there is no poverty, no crime, no war. You look out the window of Starfleet Headquarters and you see paradise. It's easy to be a saint in paradise, but the Maquis do not live in paradise. Out there in the demilitarized zone all the problems haven't been solved yet. Out there, there are no saints, just people...angry, scared, determined people who are going to do whatever it takes to survive."

Sisko is an amazing character, a hero, a relatable guy, a father figure, a social critic... DS9 could air TODAY and he would still be an amazingly relevant character.

That's what so amazing about Deep Space Nine & Voyager (and to a degree TNG and Enterprise as well). Both shows are more than 20 years old now and the characters are still amazingly relevant and interesting. I think in a way, DS9 was before it's time. The setting (especially the stories of season 4-7) would work very well with today's approach of tv-series story telling.

I love you all for taking about this.
*naked cuddles*
Completely agree with you all.
When it comes to social commentary, TNG was fun but it had a touch of Roddenberry about it. Some pretty blatant misogyny running through it at times.
DS9 and Voyager both felt way more connected. Sisko is my favourite captain. Yeh i could have done with less Prophet stuff. But the series just stood out for me.
Head and shoulders.

I already came out of the Deep Space 9 closet in the other thread, but I'm a total fan of DS9 I have watched every episode at least 4 times, most of them more then that.
I am hooked on it forever. All the characters are amazing. From Sisko to Vince Fontaine-I want to love them all!

DS9 has aged very gracefully indeed. A large ensemble cast, story arcs, special effects that hold up surprisingly well, political intrigue plotlines, etc. If we're talking about favorite characters, I'd be remiss not to mention Nog. IMO, he felt like a much more relatable/believable teenager than Wesley Crusher did, and the scene from Season 3 where he explains to Sisko why he wants to join Starfleet is heartwarming and heartbreaking in equal measure. Spoiler alert for kinda off-topic discussion I highly recommend Babylon 5 to DS9 fans. It had visibly lower production values than DS9, but the writing, characters, and world building are excellent and well worth watching it for.

darn. I got really excited at a recommendation based specifically on DS9, but sadly that show isn't on netflix. I'm a netflix addict, so I really prefer it when shows are there. Still might find it somewhere eventually though, so I'll keep my eyes out for Babylon 5

You know, I think DS9 handled "shipboard" families in general much better than TNG did. Maybe it's because of the setting. More off topic Lee I've been rewatching it on go90, if that helps. Perhaps I should make a thread in the general TV discussion section...

So then. Favourite characters? Story arcs? Episodes? Virtually any scene with Quark and Odo. Agreed. Quark really annoyed me at first. But he really grew on me. Mostly cos of the Odo stories. The episode with them on the mountain is one of my favourites. Imma gonna have to say the war was my favourite arc. I know it's cliche and all will say that. But for me, it was nice to see a real side to the virtuous and righteous world of other seasons. It seemed more human and real, and there were some great individual performances. Salome Jens was such an awesome actor, even though her face was almost completely covered. 'In the pale moonlight' is my favourite episode I think. The one where Sisko brings the Romulans into the war. I love his conflict. Garak is in the episode which makes it awesome. And I loved the Romulan dude. 'It's a faaaaake'. Sheesh. I'm a proper nerd. 🤓

I'm a proper nerd. 🤓 Fortunately, that's considered very attractive these days. I really liked the way the war is handled as well. I read once that the original script/plan was to let the war take place in the fourth season instead of the trouble with the Klingon Empire that spread out over season 4 & 5. But in my opinion the way it's been done now is way better. It created that perfect sense of foreboding that no matter what they did, the war was going to come regardless. In the Pale Moonlight is one of my personal favorites as well. I also really liked the stories about Section 31 and the degree to which both Starfleet and the Federation's political establishment were aware of it's existence and role in interstellar affairs. It really puts the Federation in a more realistic light without losing it's general utopian feel. That combined with chracters such as Gul Dukat, Micheal Eddington and Kai Winn gave the series much stronger background than TNG or Voyager.

In the Pale Moonlight is my favourite DS9 episode. DS9 is easily the best series. Voyager is a close second but the champion stands.
