I am replaying Andromeda and I am in everlasting pain, why couldn't Gil have been a squadmate? Oh, Bioware gods, you show no mercy.

Like Gil with the same personality, back story and voice actor with an actual character arc that wasn't borrowed from season 4 of Will and Grace has way more potential as a squadmate than Liam.

I like Liam as a friend. I find some of his humorous moments to be quite excellent. However, as far as romances go I can't imagine romancing a joke character and being able to take it seriously. I don't know if he was meant to be a joke character though, but it feels like it to me like that is what he is. Tis a shame, he's easy on the eye (till he takes his shirt off-then the magic is gone for some reason).

Lmao! I know, you're into Jaal and all but soooorry I cringed so hard during that scene where they both are shirtless. But I also can't say I understood what they wanted to point out with that scene. Probably nothing.
When I played those preview hours back then and met Liam I thought I was going to like him because I enjoyed his voice quite a bit. Didn't really turn out that way but I also don't actually HATE him.
But I gotta say, last year I never managed to get his mission because I didn't bother with the outposts, this time I got it and it was definitely one of the best of the game, for me. At least there's something, right?!
Oh and I had the romance-y-in-Ryders-quarters-scene happen last week! NICE. But it's always so bittersweet with Gil. Desperately wanting more but knowing there really isn't much left except the whole Jill fiasco.

At least there's something, right?! Sorry, off point here, but confused. Wasn't founding outposts your entire job as Pathfinder? Or do you mean that you never bothered with the quests that come out of them?

I just started a new run of Andromeda. *sighs* Hi, Gil. I'm back. I missed you. I'm still angry about how mistreated you are in your own narrative, but I missed you.

It's an odd feeling every time I play the game I am tempted to flirt with Gil. His voice is so appealing! I just can't get past the Jill apocalypse though. I hope if we get a second Andromeda Gil will get a much better romance the next time around.

But not sure if that matters.

But not sure if that matters. I did just cheat at poker against Gil. He brought up Jill saying Gil wasn't doing his duty by [essentially] being gay. Never mind the shitload of people still in cryo who would love to be out and about before people start having babies. I commented that she was the "disrespectful" kind of friend. Really wish that commentary could be taken to its logical conclusion wherein Gil becomes best friends with Kallo and kicks Jill off some mountain peak on Eos. Or just throw her back into cryo since her job is 100% useless at the moment.

I don't really quite get why that was never fixed-when the trans fuck up was addressed fairly quickly. I mean do they really not get why the Gil storyline was super offensive too?

I don't really quite get why that was never fixed-when the trans fuck up was addressed fairly quickly. I mean do they really not get why the Gil storyline was super offensive too? Honestly, I'm positive that the Gil storyline didn't get replaced because it would effectively have meant gutting EVERYTHING he has in the game as it is and starting from scratch to put together something new. Which, don't mistake me, they SHOULD have, because everything about it offends me on a cellular level (not even just the homophobic attitude of everything related to the hellbeast, but I see red every time that Gil remarks about how 'our fathers bring us into the world, maybe that's enough' because no fuck you - even if that line is supposed to support the supposed maturity arc for him, since that's not actually an arc, the line just EXISTS and it infuriates me). But I can totally recognize that it would have called for a more expensive process than making Jaal bi - the groundwork for Jaal's romance for BroRyder was already there, a lot of material from Jaal's romance doesn't change between Bro/Sis Ryder... Comparatively speaking, adding a same-sex romance path for a character is easier and cheaper than having to effectively rebuild a character from the ground up. Not even getting to bringing the actors back into the studio - Jaal's romance would call for two actors to come back in for a few additional lines (if they didn't have that audio already lying around). BARE MINIMUM, rebuilding Gil's entire character arc would involve bringing three characters in, and more if they added new banter and interactions with other characters. From a financial sense, yeah, it's understandable why they didn't. I still say they should have eaten the cost because dear GOD, I love Gil in SPITE of his writing, not because of it. But I understand why they didn't, especially when they cut support and patches not long after.

I get that, to an extent. I mean, me and my friends all give each other shit. None of them say I'm "not doing my duty" by not having children. Some of the straight guy friends flirt with me but that's all in fun. Complete opposite of what Jill was doing.

But I understand why they didn't, especially when they cut support and patches not long after. Yeah they should have done both, not just one. I mean even if they just removed that faliure as a man line and replaced that one line with something else-I would feel so much better. I still wouldn't like the romance as is-but damn my soul would ache knowing that's in the game. I get that, to an extent. I mean, me and my friends all give each other shit. None of them say I'm "not doing my duty" by not having children. Some of the straight guy friends flirt with me but that's all in fun. Complete opposite of what Jill was doing. Yeah, I think they misunderstand the fact that even friends have lines you don't cross. Friends never should actively be hurtful about something like that. Also even if Gil is fine with it-it still doesn't factor in that we the players are not fine with it, and we are given no player control to really react to it. We can't call Jill out on her shit when we meet her. Hell even when we confront her about her baby batter shit-it's quickly thrown to the side for her to brag about how we made Gil not a completely useless person. Cause yes, best friend ever award goes to Jill. Wow, why am I so emotional about this still?

He may even give her more slack because she came with him to Andromeda. Hopefully, having someone like Scott in his life will show him how a respectful relationship works, regardless of whether or not he's romanced. Wow, why am I so emotional about this still? Because it remains one of the shittier things they've done.

Yeah, here's the thing about that kind of talking shit. You do it face to face with one another. It's done in a one-on-one setting. It's a private moment where you know that your banter is meant harmlessly and can apologize for a mistimed jab. Most importantly, this is NOT something you would introduce this person to someone else with.
From a psychological standpoint, the fact that he talks about it to Ryder like he does says that, perhaps unconsciously, it DOES bother him, but he is too used to the idea that she is his best friend to say anything.
Like, I've said it a dozen times, there are a million ways to take what's there with Gil and build an arc FOR HIM, based on who he is, what drives him, what motivates him - he's a street kid given this amazing chance, he wants to leave a legacy of SOME kind (which would be why he's impulsively latching on to this idea of a kid) and this leads to him putting in sixty hour work days, he's had so little friendship in his life that he's willing to settle for some twisted bare minimum bar scrapping idea of friendship to have it, he's even a great sounding board for Ryder to talk about their issues surrounding the death of their father. But instead, his writer tosses all of that aside to focus a character arc on this other character and reduce him to a supporting character in his narrative!
