I thought it would be cool to have a FFA thread like this. Discussions, theories, wishes, disappointments. Here!

made a poll because why not! dunno how popular is going to be this thread since we discussed this a lot in other threads lol, but I guess it's cool having this thread here in ffa to collect future romance info about the poll, my favorite is Alistair but only my modded experience so I guess I'm not gonna vote that one. My favorite DA2 romance is Isabela, having Fenris and Anders in the second place in a tie. And Iron Bull as my absolute favorite gay experience in the franchise. Hoping for the long awaited human gay KISA we deserve, I dont care about the age but I tend to like older men tbh hoping he's sympathetic with mages too. As second option would love a bisexual dwarf, but I have a feeling that this kind of archetypes (dwarf and KISAs) are not going to be the plot-relevant characters in DA4 so I would prefer whoever is gonna be the plot-relevant male character to be bisexual. And I need to see more werewolves, I need to know about the scaled ones and the fex (anthropomorphic fox men?) is this romance-related? Maybe

YAAASS GUD THIS IS A WHOLESOME THREAD I voted for Sera, Isabela, and Zevran but it's a pretty tough choice tbh 😱 because there are so many LIs and romance arcs that I like. Fenris, Leliana, Morrigan, Dorian, Bull...... I like them all for different reasons. I've said it before, on a purely selfish personal level I'd be thrilled with Calpernia, a Tal-Vashoth lady, Mae, or even Harding as f/f options (though Harding is a little Betty-ish for my usual tastes, I like those Veronicas 😋). I feel like if Calpernia came back as a companion and/or LI though, she'd be tragically heterosexual. Just because that's been my luck with lady mages I'm enamored of lmao (Morrigan, Safiya, Viconia....or unromanceable like Qara). So even though I'm madly in love with Calpernia (frfr it's weird) I'm putting my money on a female qunari. Then I can make a female qunari PC and have a qunari sandwich from Sera's dreams. And I'm hoping to see bisexual male options who talk about men as casually and frequently as they talk about women. Or gay or bi guys who takes relationships very slowly and seriously, like Alistair, Sebastian, and Cullen do. I could see Marius being a bi LI... he's a "magekiller" but only because that's what he was taught as a slave, and doesn't seem to harbor any particular ill will against mages. I thought he was broody at first but rereading the comics, he just seems like a quiet thoughtful decent guy. Bit like Kaidan.

Oops I didnt vote lol Voted for Isabela, Bull and Fenris (I'll be changing this vote if I see Anders with less votes heh) I broke my own poll rules since I voted for two DA2 characters Totally agree with bi men talking about men, playing POE2 and seeing Tekehu talking about men is just a fresh air for my salty heart lol I would like for them to reverse the trope and make the straights the promiscuous ones and bisexuals being the chivalrous companions for once. For gay characters, especially gay men, please not more real gay angst, we have that in real life. I for certain dont want that bs in my way escapism. Interesting, he is handsome for sure dont mind a tragic past involving that backstory as long as he's not another Cullen or tsundere Fenris

Even though I never finished any of the dragon age games I got far enough in origins to start romancing Morrigan and I got through the Cassandra romance in Inquisition. Merrill gets my vote by default because of my thirst for elves.

I gotta clarify I have nothing against promiscuity, some of my favs are and I have a couple of promiscuous canon PCs but it would be cool to see the other way around and reverse the trope hehe

And I'd like to see a female qunari. I'm in total agreement about them needing to mix it up a bit and get away from the promiscuous bi trope. As for the poll...well...APPARENTLY I HAVE A TYPE. BIG SURPRISE.

It's funny how female desire demons have slowly but surely disappeared from the games as they've went on lol. DAO was desire demon ridden. TIME FOR MALE ONES.

At the risk of repeating myself, I want a werewolf Knight in Sour Armour, who's a warrior from Rivain or an Avvar, so that I can romance him as a mage and not have to have a "I'm a warrior, so I don't really like mages, but you seem ok" moment. Like this dude I know, that's brand new information I have not shared before.

Omg, did you see that funny-ass meme with these three and Ariana's "thank u, next"? I can't find it anymore but it cracked me up. Zevran - one taught me love Fenris - one taught me patience Solas - one taught me pain 😂

Out of my three votes for favourites in each game, only one of them I can actually romance in canon. I would definitely love a KISA for DA4. No more depraved bisexuals who only ever talk about/flirt with the opposite member of sex. I always seem to go for one with lots of baggage and they generally end up being straight because only a woman's love can heal them obviously. Would definitely love a new mage or warrior I could romance as I usually go for them before I go for rogues, but a rogue could work. I'm just usually a slut for my mage/warrior or mage/mage romances.

I've actually been discussing this with my boyfriend recently and explained to him why Dragon Age has always been a disappointment to me when it comes to the romance department. All the men I've wanted have been straight. Every last one of them. My favorite romances can't even be acknowledged in canon because they require mods. I'm boring and want the "good guy" romance. I want the ruggedly handsome blond warrior to be into men. I want him to be the adorably awkward romantic that will take the relationship seriously. I want those sweet little gestures where he'll hold you, comfort you in your time of need, give you something that is meaningful (Alistair's Rose, Cullen's lucky coin). I want all that sweet fluffy stuff. I don't want him to be promiscuous...he doesn't have to be a virgin but I don't want to constantly hear about his past romantic encounters if it isn't necessary or asked by the PC about it. I want to be able to develop and feel the emotional connection like I did with Alistair, Cullen, and Blackwall. Ifan from Divinity Original Sin 2 is probably the closest I've had to my ideal fantasy gay romance. It was really sweet and I enjoyed seeing it develop throughout the game, but I'd love to have something like that in the Dragon Age games. My boyfriend understands how I feel since he also wanted loves Alistair and wouldn't have minded romancing Cullen...but he's also lucky enough that he actually seems to really like Iron Bull and to a lesser extent Dorian. Although I was happy to hear he would've preferred Sebastian as a romance just like I would've.
I have to admit that Marius is kind of hot...but I haven't actually read the comics so I don't know anything about him! I'm not sure how I'd feel about him being a m/m option since he already has the ex-girlfriend baggage with him...I want the bisexual m/m option to either have a preference for men or have had meaningful relationships with men and not shy away from mentioning that they are attracted to men. ...I just want to finally have a human male option that I find attractive instead of pining for the one that got away because he's straight...it's happened too many times in these games.
I voted for Alistair, Anders, and Cullen...although if I could have I would've voted for Blackwall instead of Anders. There are aspects of the Anders romance that I enjoy and he gets bonus points for being a ruggedly handsome blond, but after seeing it through different perspectives/games (I always play a gay Hawke romancing Anders) I've come to notice many things that turn me away from him, as well as the fact that his romance/character is too focused on the mages/Templars and detracts from my enjoyment and the little romantic content there is. I still love him of course and he's always going to be my DA2 romance, but it's just not what I'm looking for.

I think by now we have firmly established what my feelings are on the matter of romance in Dragon Age - mods aside, the only time I walked away satisfied from my options was DA2 and Fenris. Alistair and Cullen are at the top of my 'let me love you!' lists of BioWare romances.
I'm gonna be honest here, I worry about the next game. Because from where I stand (and I know it's a subjective view), they've been pretty quick to throw in dynamics that skirt the line of abusive when it comes to same sex pairings - I find Anders emotionally manipulative and abusive (like he actually pulls the "if you love me, you'll do this" line about helping him with planting the bomb in the Chantry, plus when he's not a romance, when romancing Fenris instead, he actually says "he seems more a wild dog than a man," dehumanizing Fenris, not to mention being the only companion who approves of sending Fenris back into slavery), Sera's relationship was cited by actual domestic abuse therapists as seeming to be textbook, Bull can come across as this with the initial scene - while he's getting confirmation about what the Inquisitor is ready for, he doesn't actually explain anything in what we see (line limits being a thing, which is kind of a problem in circumstances that require ongoing communication), and, while after that listing, this seems petty in comparison, Dorian not showing the Inquisitor the same respect he shows Bull of communicating and sharing his plans to return to Tevinter, seemingly for good, making their relationship a long distance one for an indefinite period of time... That's disrespectful behavior. Not to mention the fact that they have had every M/M relationship except with Fenris make innuendo regarding being tied up or in chains of some kind, implying that M/M relationships are inherently kinky (with Fenris seeming as the exception because someone realized that the abuse victim expressing an interest in bondage might be in somewhat poor taste), or the fact that every non-PC F/F romance of note in the series has been abusive and manipulative (Marjolaine/Leliana, Branka/Hespith, Celene/Briala, the last of these REALLY bad because Inquisition paints getting them back together as a good thing...)
Like, whether or not I'm ready too much into things (it's been known to happen), I think it means something that anyone is walking away thinking this, period.
I love these games. I love this universe. But I look at the examples of what they've done to this point, I don't feel confident in their ability to deliver on quality content for queer players. Whether it's a directive from on high or a blind spot a mile wide caused by the fact that the writers in question have been straight and unaware of how lacking in diversity the stories for queer players are, they're still falling back on repetitive narratives and an inability to see homosexuality as something that society doesn't care about.
I mean, that last point has always been my sticking point about Dorian and his character quest in Inquisition, that, aside from the odd hiccup, I felt like Thedas didn't care about sexuality, and then, oops, no, even in this fantastical world, this is something that marks you as 'different.' As 'deviant.' As 'the other.'
My ideal romance options in Dragon Age 4 would be A) the Knight in Shining Armor type, the blond, sweetheart, gentle soul who is genuinely nice, and is 100% gay, is not and will never have a romantic relationship with a woman, B) a werewolf struggling with the curse, play the "Beauty and the Beast" love story, because that's a narrative that's always had a queer undertone, and C) an elf (city-born or Dalish, I'm flip-flopping on this) who is proud and unwavering in his support of his people and culture while still standing against Solas/Fen'Harel. The knife to the gut is that I don't expect any of these to happen.
