and most game companies still won't have the same attention to character development and writing as Bio has had. I think I preferred all the companions in FO4 to ME:A. No-one was more surprised than me that 1) I was actually playing a Fallout game and 2) I fell in love with the companions. They got some amazing actors for MacCready, Piper, Nick and Hancock particularly. They saw the positive response so hopefully they'll carry on this success.

What I don't get is why they're so eager to have another multiplayer IP when their one MMO did super badly, relatively speaking, and lost most of its playerbase anyways. Well the subscription model didn't work out so well when people started leaving in droves so they went FTP and put every cool armour set, weapon, decoration etc in the Cartel Market and people who have more money than sense spend $$$ on those fucking gambling crates in the hopes of getting that platinum rarity item. Also they just did a direct sale of a platinum lightsaber for $60. I'm not even kidding. If this is their plan for Dylan, they can go fuck themselves. Also I'm not paying BW any more money until they fix the m/m sitch in ME:A and for me that means a squadmate which is very unlikely at this point so... pfft. TBH, I'd rather play a game like FO4 where I don't feel left out in the cold even if the romances are brief. I'm guessing the next Elder Scrolls will improve this area further and hopefully have a voiced protagonist too. Also there is the Starfield project and Spiders is releasing Greedfall next year and they had an m/m squad option in their last game but no playable female character which I think is a mistake they won't make again. There's hope beyond Bioware... in my humble opinion. I've somewhere on the interwebs that they didnt have a female protagonist due to their limited budget. Even though Technomancer was a AA game, I think it started as a Kickstarter project. I'm not completely sure on this, so forgive me if I said anything wrong But yeah, it's basically the same for me. I'm expecting quite a few things from Starfield every time I hear more stuff from it and Greedfall looks incredible just based from that trailer of theirs. Quite excited even, I should say!

Probably not on the same level as Bio has done in the past, and most game companies still won't have the same attention to character development and writing as Bio has had. But at least it will give us more choices and we won't have to rely on Bioware as the only inclusive company anymore. good point, but i wouldn't count on bethesda to tell me a bedtime story properly, let alone shit on thedas/me level of execution. i'm guessing indie market might sooner give us stuff like that but of course, it will not be on the aaa level. if pillars of eternity had romances and interesting setting, i would be happy camper.

"We don't want to end up like Bioware, guys! They catered to the homos and they all betrayed them when they didn't get what they want."

I wrote a sort of opinion piece about Spiders' decision to exclude a female protagonist back before the game came out and according to my "research" (lol) , the game was published by Focus Home Interactive so I'm guessing they paid the bills. Never heard of Spiders relying on crowd-source funding.

"We don't want to end up like Bioware, guys! They catered to the homos and they all betrayed them when they didn't get what they want." I will literally start making games myself if this happens. Even if I have to spend 10 years learning how to do it and rope my friends into doing the voice acting.

There was some brainstorming as to how many different alien species should be featured and such

I haven't played either game so that's interesting to hear. I was under the impression that FO4 was baby steps in terms of characters and dialogue, still nowhere near Bioware levels. But it's good that their characters are popular! One positive that might come from this is that other companies see how much of a negative reaction Bio got for MEA m/m content and specifically include that sort of content to win over these consumers. Probably not on the same level as Bio has done in the past, and most game companies still won't have the same attention to character development and writing as Bio has had. I heard that PoE2 will have romances. Maybe because Avellone is no longer working on it. I like the guy and respect that he is firm in his beliefs in what should be in games, but if consumers want romances, he has to accommodate. I watched through Banner Saga 1 and 2 recently which is an indie game by former Bioware employees. It is pretty basic and is mostly a survival simulator interspersed with combat, but it was surprisingly addictive. The story and characters were pretty good and drew me in quickly. There is no LGBT content and barely any real romance, but the writing for the characters was decent and I was invested in the story. I don't particularly care about graphics if the story is good, so I don't mind having the best writing go to indies. Especially since AAA development seems to be trending toward less plot and more action and MP. It's kind of like when television started churning out reality TV; they save on writers' salaries and set design and just film stupid people wanting to be famous. MP is probably cheaper to maintain and gets more constant microtransactions for developers. One positive that might come from this is that other companies see how much of a negative reaction Bio got for MEA m/m content and specifically include that sort of content to win over these consumers. Probably not on the same level as Bio has done in the past, and most game companies still won't have the same attention to character development and writing as Bio has had. "We don't want to end up like Bioware, guys! They catered to the homos and they all betrayed them when they didn't get what they want." Well hopefully they look at it in context. It's fairly obvious why so many people were upset. People stating how this was moving backwards and being so personally hurt over it should IMO be clear to other developers that it was a betrayal of trust and lack of attention which caused the backlash, not because LGBT fans will yell over anything. I would think the outcry would demonstrate that there is a marketable base of consumers who actively want LGBT content and it influences their purchasing decisions. Even if it's just FO4's playersexual approach to characters it's an easy enough and cheap way of increasing the consumer base.

Do you think there's a chance we might get to see something from it at E3? Spiders games have been getting better and better (save the stupid no female protag in The Technomancer) so I have high hopes for Greedfall. I also would put money on them releasing a full trailer at E3 and probably doing a couple of interviews too.

Every time I hear about a new game I'm like "Can I be a gay man in it?" and if not then "Can I be a woman instead in it?" Greedfall and Starfield are on my list too. Elex looks cool but is male only I think. I'm looking forward to TLOU Pt2 as well and there's also Gone Home which I'm hoping beyond all hope gives you some freedom to fall for a guy as a biker dude but there is like 0.05% chance of that happening. Red Dead Redemption 2 might let me be gay in some way but I doubt it. Pickings are pretty slim but you never know what surprises may be in store. There might be a new Elder Scrolls game announced as some sort of super secret surprise like FO4 was.

I am kind of hoping it is the case. It is such a step back if they don't include at least some gay/bisexual romance options and it would be pretty frowned upon by progressive gamers. In the case of ME:A I don't know who to blame for what happened? EA or the studio... either way I think the people in charge of overseeing its development should have lost their jobs tbf. Not because of the romance situation alone... but because the game did not come together in the end. I meant more that Starfield might not have a romance system in general. But I think Bethesda is aware by now that it's a popular mechanic. I still hate them for deleting FO NV's gay-perks (cherchez la femme/confirmed bachelor) but leaving the hetero ladykiller/black widow in.. That shit made me salty because they just didnt code any restriction in while cementing at least heterosexuality as normal nostalgic wank into the game.. does that make sense? Im angry, i sometimes dont.

VFerreira93 I just read this on the Nordic Games official forums from one of the developers about ELEX: Quote Originally Posted by Hopeful9 Will you be able to recruit followers? I really like having companions. I did not see any in the demos.
Yes! There will be different companions. They will have their own background, strengths, missions and opinion. If they join you, you can find them at your "homebase" and take one of them with you, if you want to. They will also respond to your behaviour and choices and you can have real good friends, a romance or they can leave you, in the end.Maybe that includes m/m?

MP is probably cheaper to maintain and gets more constant microtransactions for developers. i think no one on the obsidian team is keen on the romances, rpgcodex used to harp about it constantly. they usually say it can't be done right and similar flimsy bullshit (as if other complex social and politic interactions are so true to life and done incredibly well. it's a game man, stylize it just like you do everything else, but i suspect its more using the public that is con-rimance to excuse devoting less resources to it). poe2 will have relationship mechanics (they refused to say romances so there's that) which implies all kind of potential relationships but nothing really concrete. i think it's their safe-guard to keep things very vague both in relation to public (which is a bit polarized) and in game execution. i didn't back them this time and will rather wait to see what they do. romances are quite an important part of rpg games for me IF they cater to players nad want to be some kind of power fantasy. in that case i want to be catered to on the other hand, i'm still holding off my first playthrough of torment-tides of numenera. it made me really happy to see today's update and additions and i hope it will not be disappointing. i want at least one new wave indie rpg that will belong in my "classic" gaming section
