Lol, okay, 15 votes for the poll is shit. I might change it to something else. What's a good book question? Favorite classic? Favorite LGBT author / character / book? Favorite classic sci-fi or fantasy? Favorite genre?

Favorite classic sci-fi or fantasy? Favorite genre? Favorite genre is good, and you can have fewer poll options. All of those others still lend to "my fav isn't on here" if you list specific titles or authors. I'd also recommend allowing multiple choice.

I was wondering, what are you guys favorite books with LGBT leads? I have very little experience with them, unfortunately. Not really a fan of romance type stuff and there doesn't seem to be a lot else. A friend passed me Hero, The Dead Will Rise First, Proxy and the sequel to it, Guardian. They're all really cheesy YA fiction and the only one I sort of liked was Proxy, tbh. Not so much the sequel. But I guess it had a lot of the same problems I find with most recent YA fiction for hetero audiences. lol

Looking at the poll again reminded me...I have to admit I quite enjoyed Sarah J Maas books, both Aelin saga and Court books ...the excesivelly long sex passages were just "nope, thanks, skip" though.

Have you seen the Watership Down cartoon? It's kinda creepy and weird but then again so is the book A few times, but of course it sort of skips or speeds through some of my favorite parts from the story. Like a lot of the second warren, with the story telling and poetry exchange. I love that part.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is one of my favourite books. When I get a book I love like that I tend to reread it once every year and my Perks copy is now falling apart. But yeah I love that book. And the film

I do have a recommendation, but not sure many will be into it, since it's crime fiction, and many of you are discussing sci-fi and fantasy here. The author's name is John Morgan Wilson ( Amazon author page). He has a whole series of crime novels with his character Benjamin Justice. The author is gay, and so is the character. Keep in mind that this is crime fiction, so it can get dark and gritty, and go to bad places. I didn't read these novels myself, I just know of them from someone else.

I was so hooked, and I hated Laurent in the first book, and grew to like him in the second. Damen will always be my favourite character, though. But anyway, yes, I consider Captive Prince to be one of my favourite series of books. And yeah, true- I won't talk about it unless someone else is more comfortable to, seeing as it is polarising. (Thanks, Tumblr). BTW, have you read this? {Spoiler} Ah, no, I haven't. Thanks for the recommendation, though! I'll look it up. I've got a reading list a mile high and I'm currently going through L.J. LABarthe's City of Jade. Ancient History Gay Fiction, and it's quite a long read.

If you decide you want to give it a go, I can send you a pdf if locating it is an issue. Ah, thanks heaps. I should be able to purchase an eBook. I looked at my eReader's website and they have the author's stuff... just not Volumes 1 & 2. Hmm... I'll hit you up if it gets too tricky, but it should be fine. Thank you heaps, though!

Have you seen the Watership Down cartoon? It's kinda creepy and weird but then again so is the book My grandma gave that movie to me when I was really little because she thought it was just a normal cartoon about rabbits. Ruined my life.

It's been a while. And seriously, I can't imagine how traumatized I would have been by that story if I'd been exposed to it at a younger age.

It is teen-targeted, but I consider John Green's (one of the co-authors) style to be sophisticated enough that I wouldn't really see it as having an overly narrow age appeal.

well I only read them in german and so I cant judge the quality of translation, but I love fantasy that doesn't uses the usual cliche-figures.. No dwarves and elves and orks but very new unusual shit.. and talking bears. ( no, not those, sadly) but Fernhachen, bureaucratic little fearful...things.. or devil cyclops..well cyclops living on a swimming island that only eat living things, the more screamin the better.. oor booklings...little nice cyclops that live..by reading books. Those books have dragons, bot those arent mean, they are authors. my favorite: The topic is in the title.. on that fantasy world people read.. Dragons write but others do too, so there is a city that's full of authors and publishers and really, really dangerous catacombs..where the wrong book can easily kill you.. or get you killed. its sadly ot really gay, but love isnt a topic anyways.. BOOKS is a topic.. and.. idk, but i havent ever read a fantasy book about books anywhere else.. and the german version is also just nice to read language wise, its funny, its gripping, its poetic, its weird. Its zamonien. Other authors I like: Cameron hurley: Gods war series, specially Infidel.. Its really quote unusual, about an assassin in a post apocalyptic sci fi world that's very much a weird mix of arab-culture and ..insects. Its also rather brutal, but that seems to be not unusual for a series dealing with endless war and literal headhunters.. my author true vuv nr 2.. Ray bradbury..Read dandelion wine and.. I would like to think that it teached me something about how americans would like to see themselves in nostalgic past.. his shit is also just nice to read. HP lovecraft.. horrible racist guy but a good horror author.. Fear of the unknown..

I was terrified of the bear from The Fox and the Hound which was actually for children, so tiny rabbits viciously murdering each other really fucked me up.

I have finally...finally started Dune by Frank Herbert. A couple years ago, I saw the movie one boring night with my father, so I vaguely know what to expect. Everyone tells me the books are amazing and to never compare the two. Well, here I go...
P.S. I hate worms. And sand.

I've read all of the main ones written by him, and some of the prequels written by his son (these don't have the same flavor, sadly). I have yet to read the final, true canon novel that was pieced together from notes and such after his death. The first three are the best, focusing on the core cast. The fourth is what I would consider to tie off Arrakis as an arc, and the two after that just start to veer off into other territory. As far as the films, I have a lot of nostalgia feels for the 1984 version, but the Syfy mini series (with DA2 Sebastian's VA as Paul!) was also quite good. A combination of the casts and visuals would be my ultimate Dune movie.

Slightly different type of book, but does anyone have tips for getting through a theoretical book that you have to read for research, but where you want to start an argument with the author on every page? Mine features thesis such as "Marxism is an Abrahamic religion" and condescending things like starting sentences with "even people who believe that they are atheists, agnosticts, humanists, etc., [are of course completely wrong]". That kind of tone just severely weakens my respect for the author and his ideas and I'm struggling to find my chill. I'm legit cursing at this book in my room here. On the plus side, I bought Nexus Uprising last night, so I have that to look forward to.

The only thing I can suggest is to try and just shut that part of your mind off while you read it. But I'm the same person that tried to read Catch-22 three separate times and eventually gave it up because I couldn't stand it. (I realize that's not very helpful.)
