Hey Trekkies! As most of you probably know, there is finally going to be a new Star Trek series! It's been over 12 years since Star Trek: Enterprise ended its run on television so it's time we get back towards exploring the galaxy! This thread is, as the title says, for general discussion about the upcoming series. So what are you thoughts about it? Here's some basic information currently known about the series: Where to watch: CBS (pilot) CBS All Access (series) in the USA, Netflix for the rest of the world Wikipedia: Star Trek: DiscoveryMemory Alpha Wiki: Star Trek: DiscoveryPremiseSet roughly ten years before the events of the original Star Trek, the series follows the crew of the USS Discovery as they discover new worlds and civilizations, while exploring the franchise's signature contemporary themes. The season-long storyline revolves around "an incident and an event in Star Trek history that's been talked about but never been explored". Main Cast Sonequa Martin-Green as Lieutenant Commander Micheal Burnham Jason Isaacs as Captain Lorca Doug Jones as Lieutenant Saru Anthony Rapp as Lieutenant Stamets James Frain as Sarek Sam Vartholomeos as Ensign Connor Maulik Pancholy as Doctor Nambue Terry Serpico as Admiral Anderson Mary Wiseman as Cadet Tilly First Trailer

The plot seems a lot like a cross from Enterprise and Voyager, to be honest I just want some gays. I feel that Star Trek never quite tackle that properly when it was suppose to be in the front of social issues and so on... although this being in the CBS channel really does not give me hope.

I'm still sad that Bryan Fuller had to step away from it, even though I've heard good things about American Gods, and I'm really looking forward to seeing that. What I'm hoping is that if this has a lot of support from fans, CBS will step up and put it on the real network and throw enough money at it to bring Fuller back. Maybe that's just a fantasy, though.
The cast looks very promising. I hope Michelle Yeoh and Rainn Wilson get lots of screen time.

I wonder how long they will only keep it on CBS All Access while the rest of the world can see it on Netflix at virtually the same time. I'm cautiously optimistic about the new series myself but one of things I'm really looking forward too is the character of Anthony Rapp; Lieutenant Stamets. He's confirmed as a gay lead among the crew. Article: Star Trek: Discovery Casts Anthony Rapp as a Gay Lead

Yay, a gay lead!
I wonder what "incident and event" they're talking about? The only one I can think of off the top of my head is the Earth-Romulan War, and the timeline is wrong for a series about that.

It would be so awesome if Star Trek would lead the way once again. As for the incident, it's been confirmed that is has nothing to do with the Kobayashi Maru, the Battle of Axanar or a Romulan War. That combined with the large support cast containing a lot of actors playing Klingon's, probably means it's going to be about the Federation vs. Klingon Empire. Another theory is that it involves the Tarsus IV incident. Although that might be a bit too related to James T. Kirk. There are also two ships involved as two actors have been cast as captain. One for the Discovery, the other for the Shenzhou.

Lionrage Have they confirmed that "just having lunch with the Klingons" picture yet? Those Klingons look god awful, if so, and I hate, hate, hate, hate when they change how aliens look when we have TNG, DS9, and Voyager to go off of. "Another genetic offshoot" like TOS will not fly with me.

As far as I know that leaked picture was legit, I'm not sure if they're 100% Klingons but if so, they appear to have changed them to what they look like in Star Trek Into Darkness.

They're all bald and are gray Maybe... maybe it was just a bad picture. I'm honestly not trying to tear down the show. I -want- it to be good, but I have this... feeling it will be absolute trash, regardless of representation.

It's been delayed several times now and the ship isn't exactly what you would call 'beautiful' in my opinion haha. But at the same time, CBS really does seem confident enough to spend 5-6 million per episode on it. Nevertheless if they are able to create something truly Star Trek while setting the bar for sci-fi shows at the equivalent of Game of Thrones / House of Cards, I'll grudgingly accept some revisions to established appearances. I just hope they are going to show more Federation species honestly. By the time of TNG/DS9/VOY their are over 150 formal member worlds with hundred's of additional colonies. Even though the series is set roughly a century earlier in the canon timeline that still leaves the possibility to introduce more truly alien humanoids (more than just a tattoo, a little bit of make-up etc.).

I so badly want cool aliens. I'm sure Doug Jones will play one.

Yeah, Doug Jones is likely going to play something a bit more alien then we've seen in Star Trek so far. I just hope they will CGI his body in such a way that it looks complete instead of just a cool alien head on a thin human body. For those who don't know his earlier roles, Doug Jones likes to play fantasy/aliens: Source

We need FORWARD stories. >.< I agree as well, it would be awesome to finally go towards the early 25th century or something. At the same time there is still very little known of the 2160 - 2260 time period so that could potentially do (another) series before going further. My personal worry is though that the main universe is kind of susceptible to ' power creep' in regards to the technological progression of the Federation. They (humanity & co) are going from pre-warp societies towards monitoring time and actively exploring time in roughly a millennium. Compare that for instance to the Mass Effect universe or the Star Wars universe. Especially the latter has stories, organizations and lore spanning across thousands of years.

There are already like five time travel TV shows on right now, and I don't have a single care for them.

I personally hope the story will be pretty condensed this time. Which given the nature of the most popular shows on tv these days is what's likely to happen in my opinion. It isn't something that's been done before with Star Trek though.
