Not really Discovery related but this fall there is a parody of Star Trek, not sure about this one. Not feeling it, honestly I'm not a Seth McFarlane fan. He can be problematic. Could've been funny if he weren't starring and if there weren't the dumb het ex plot

I bet it is because they have less explosions and focus more on character interactions. Omfg it is true, wild!

All hype has died unceremoniously. It was meant to be set in the main universe but looks like the reboot stuff so I assume they changed their minds because this can't fit into the canon at all now. Terrible acting from the lead woman in that trailer (not Michelle Yeoh - she's always fantastic).
I had lost faith when it was revealed to be another prequel and tnow I just want to forget it exists.
I'm very worried the gay character os just token. Being marketed as the gay character is a bit of a red flag for me. Would be better for that to be revealed organically within the series.

I'm of two minds regarding this. On the one hand I agree with you about revealing it organically as the series goes on. On the other, there is Trek's entire, er, semi-non-history to consider with LGBT characters. They've used bisexuality for titillation, could have taken a chance with a couple of TNG episodes but chose not to, and people were pretty divided over the reboot's choice with Sulu, including George Takei who is gay and outspoken about it. To my knowledge, one of the only times they got it right was with a certain scene with Dax in DS9 greeting one of their former wives; there is a nice f/f kiss that is not male-gazy or played for titillation. (If there are any other moments, I don't know about them.) So, in light of that, and also similar discussions that have been occurring about the Star Wars universe not having LGBT characters (in the films, at any rate), I don't necessarily think it's bad to say, "With this gay character, we are another step closer to bringing Star Trek into the inclusive, accepting future that Gene Roddenberry imagined. It's a piece that has been missing for far too long." The method of reboot Sulu seems more token than I think this will be. That said, the most natural way to reveal that is for him to start a relationship with another crew member, or flirt and be rejected -- those icons, man, they're always a gamble -- or get with some hot alien guy. To be perfectly honest, regardless of what the series is, the various romantic entanglements or sexual encounters have been my least favorite part of Star Trek. Kirk was excessive, and sometimes gross. Riker was occasionally a Kirk-light. The ones I've enjoyed the most over the years have been the slow burns between regular cast members: Riker/Troi, Worf/Dax, Kira/Odo. I admit it would be pretty great if they had that with a couple of guys, but I don't know how satisfactory that would be to gay fans who might want the representation to be a little more obvious than a "will they, or won't they?" romance.

I would have preferred an announcement that there is lgbt inclusion. Let us know that equality is involved but not reveal who to avoid anyone becoming just "the gay character " that's what I'd do.

@nightscrawl There is also another scene in DS9 between Dax and Pel, a Ferangi woman who has a crush on Quark. Dax susses out that she has a crush and is excited for her... except in that moment Dax doesn't even know Pel is a woman! It's a great scene. Regarding the promotion of the gay character... Have they revealed his/her name? I am okay with marketing the fact that your series will have a gay character, though really we should be beyond that. Every show should have several LGBT characters just like, you know, real life... but if they are explicitly saying, hey, look, here is the gay character! I don't like that. It's lame and reminds me somewhat of the way Dorian was revealed. From then on it was hard not to see him as "the gay character," and that just felt unfair to the character. I, too, prefer to learn about characters' sexuality organically through the story, "The 100" is such an awesome example. I remember thinking, wow, these two sure have chemistry. Sigh, if only the world weren't so homophobic, they'd clearly be a couple; it's really a shame--HOLY SHIT THEY JUST KISSED, OMG!!! I'd rather it be like that

I really liked Pel. Two women in Quarks life who have the "lobes" for business (including his mother) that are greater than men. As for the Discovery character, yes, he has been announced.

I do not mind the focus on a character sexuality, mostly because it gets me to watch the show. Otherwise I would not know about it unless someone on tumblr makes gif sets.
I do not think that is part of "look at the gays, we have them" which is fine too but more, "this show has a diverse cast maybe you will be interested". I mean most assume the cast is straight, I am guilty of this, that is why it is a surprise.
Maybe when we get to a point where we do not assume things like that, PR with this type of announcements will not be necessary.

I'm still sad that Bryan Fuller had to step away from it, even though I've heard good things about American Gods, and I'm really looking forward to seeing that. What I'm hoping is that if this has a lot of support from fans, CBS will step up and put it on the real network and throw enough money at it to bring Fuller back. Maybe that's just a fantasy, though. The cast looks very promising. I hope Michelle Yeoh and Rainn Wilson get lots of screen time. srsly that djin fuckscene is..holy shit, 50 shades of hot.

The more I watch the trailer, the more I hate it. I thought I'd eventually start to be optimistic again, but I just... can't. A diverse cast, Doug Jones, and a gay character isn't enough to make this work for me. Those Klingons... I just... nope.

Personally I remain cautiously optimistic. The trailer didn't really do it for me but then again neither have any trailer for Star Trek tv-series ever. For example, you sure get that sense of intense moral and ethical stories based in a science-fiction setting on TNG's trailers back in the day.

yay for gay 'n all, but i hate the timeline placement. will we again have a star trek where the crew struggles to fart it's way from planet to planet, and eats powdered food from barrels? thanks, the expanse is an excellent series covering that feel. i just want my voy/tng/ds9 kind of trek

I am not a fan of the timeline placement either. I have zero interest in it. Why aren't we going a post-DS9 route? The technology of Discovery of course doesn't fit for that time. I'm just annoyed.

Unfortunately it does seem to be based mostly on the aesthetic style established by the movies of the Abramsverse. Personally I suspect the main target demographic is probably new fans that started to like Star Trek from those movies instead of the series of the 90's or even earlier.

Eh, I don't think we can judge it from the first trailer. I mean, Star Trek Beyond's first trailer was Kirk driving around on a motorcycle to The Beastie Boys and yet out of all the movies it felt the most like a classic episode with a big budget, which is the kind of thing I want from a Trek movie.
Anyway, I'm willing to give it a shot, but...God, I don't want to sign up for CBS' All-Access to watch it.
