At this point killing gay characters is a big no no, of course they can always do it and get backslash for it on social media. I am still hopeful that this tv series turns out ok...

The SDCC trailer looks a lot better -- it seems a little grittier than TOS and TNG, but if it keeps to the same quality as, say later DS9, I have no problem with that.
That said, god I wish it was on something else than this All-Access thing. I'm subscribed to enough streaming services, damn it!

Agreed. If this was, say, a partnership with Amazon or Netflix, I'd be all over it. As is, I'm not going to subscribe to a new service for just one show. Another pet peeve of mine - why don't Starfleet phasers fire beams anymore? It's a little weird to me that they're all pulse phasers like the Defiant's.

I got a little excited for a minute there. Oh well. *shrugs*

Although the Klingons still look weird. This is the first time, when it comes to streaming, that I'm glad I live in Ireland. Usually there are a ton of things that I can't stream because they are all on US only streaming services but this time Netflix is bringing it to it's non US & CA customers, so I get to watch it without having to steal it! As much as I'm looking forward to watching Discovery, I still think all this looking back into Star Fleet's past is navel gazing and ends up messing with established timelines too much, just so fan favourite aliens can be a pre-kirk series. I mean there were Borg in Enterprise for fuck sake! What I'd really like is a post Voyager series. I want to know the status of Federation/Cardassian/Romulan and Klingon Empires in a post dominion war Universe and how the discoveries of Voyager have impacted the Federation. Tell those stories, not endless exploration of the pre-Kirk Federation.

More Janeway is always good. Even loved her camo in Star Trek Nemesis (even if it is a terrible film)

Woohoo well I'll be out of the States by this fall so can watch this on Netflix instead of signing up for whatever CBS All Access is.

Agreed about doing more past the Kirk era. Like, even if it was in the Kelvinverse, I would be fine with that.

Not really Discovery related but this fall there is a parody of Star Trek, not sure about this one. I'm certified trash for family guy-so I'm expecting I'll like this show. Woohoo well I'll be out of the States by this fall so can watch this on Netflix instead of signing up for whatever CBS All Access is. Lucky! I won't get to watch it all probably unless I cave into the pressure and get CBS access, is there even a release window yet for the show????

I thought Family Guy kinda got stale after a while, but Seth McFarlane has done some good movies as of late, and it's plainly obvious from his work that he's a huge Trek fan, so I have no doubt that it will have that same feel as classic Trek.
Oh, fun fact -- Jonathan Frakes is directing episodes for both Discovery AND The Orville.

Voyager and Deep Space Nine both shook up the political situation a lot, so there'd be plenty of opportunities for new stories. I'm really not liking the prequel fixation of the last twelve years, but a post-Star Trek VI pre-TNG series could also be interesting. Plus we'd get those snazzy red uniforms back.

I want a continuation of the deep space nine story. It left off in an odd way. I mean it was okay I guess...but the books were kind of a mess that continued the story, and thus I would really like a series instead. (or movies would work too, but not sure if the cast would even come back at this point...argh!)

I'm not a huge Trekkie so I don't know what the current timeline is like. Does DS9 end at the same time as Voyager returns to Federation space? Or are their politics separate enough that it doesn't matter? Do the TNG films involve any DS9 plots?
I guess basically my question is, what is the latest political situation in the ST universe, since it now seems like all new material is reboots or prequels?

I guess basically my question is, what is the latest political situation in the ST universe, since it now seems like all new material is reboots or prequels? Eeep, I feel like I should be able to answer this since I've seen all of the episodes, but it's just not simple to answer since I didn't watch them as they air-and the timelines seem to be a bit intertwinned at least at some points. I know all the major political situations in Deep Space 9 were resolved (the war with the Dominion was won, and peace is likely due to Odo now being a major part of their collective (the great link). Hmmm...Voyager takes place primarily in the Delta quadrant so doesn't have a major impact on the alpha quadrant except for maybe the situation with the borg-and that was resolved in the TNG movies. (as much as you can resolve the borg since they time travel and basically break any rules to do whatever bull shit they want). The only real references the films make to DS9 is Warf really (and he is in command of the Defiant during one of the movies, and he's takes leave from DS9 to go on a mission in one of the movies, and I think he's just on the crew on the last one-but don't quote me on that.) OBrian never appears in any of the movies, which I always thought was strange. :/ The situation as far as I can tell is most of the alpha quadrant is under startfleet control we kind of won. I guess they don't know what to do with that maybe? Though clearly it would not be hard to say one of the factions are going against them, or the borg could come back...or an all new threat. Not sure why they don't want to go forward really.

Maybe as some have already said, there's only so much relatable human stories ST can tell once the galactic utopia Rodenberry imagined has come to fruition.

That might be what they have in mind. Though I really would have loved to had some closure on some of the personal stories on Deep Space nine. I guess it's too late for that now though.
