WARNING: This isn't for outright bashing fans of characters.
Have you ever seen a character get their own fanbase, but you don't get why? Has a character just not hit your right buttons? Or pushed your buttons to the point you hate that character? Well, here's a thread to pool all your confusion together. And if you like a character usually hated, feel free to also explain the appeal here.
This thread is for deeper understanding, not outright bashing people who like that character.
I'll go first: I really don't understand Gaspard fans.
Celene fans... I get, to some extent, even if I'm no Celene fan. But all Gapard does is whine about how he should have the throne because birthright yadda yadda. It's annoying. It feels like the only reason you'd give him the Orlesian throne is because you either think he deserves it just by having royal blood (despite Celene also having royal blood) or because you hate the Great Game so much that you think he'll somehow be able to end that tradition.

I personally don't understand Kylo Ren fans. It is just so inconceivable how the fanbase worships a guy who killed his father and betrayed the Skywalker line. I even saw a Happy Father's Day card with Kylo Ren on the front. Isn't that just... a low blow? I mean, seriously, it is just strange to me. This one time at Toys'R'Us (yes, I am a toy collector) a fellow customer came up to me and asked which figure is Darth Vader's son because she needed a figure for her grandson's party. This was around Force Awakens's release, and there were none of Luke Skywalker. I told her this, and she said, "No, Darth Vader's son... that guy named Kyle." I replied, "That's Darth Vader's grandson and his name is Ben Solo or Kyle Ren. Luke is Vader's son. 'No, I am your father...' is the quote from the old movies remember?" The lady looked at me like I literally slapped her, scoffed, and mumbled, "He is just getting Captain America!"
Like... okay? You asked, I gave an answer, Janice. Fuck off and may the Force hit your saggy ass on the way out.

gayhawke That's so funny. Who thought putting Kylo on a birthday card was a good idea?

My greatest problem with Gaspard, Celene, and whatever her elven lover's name was is that it's pretty clear you're supposed to have read the tie-in novel to have a real opinion on the characters (although, yes, it's more realistic that the Inquisitor knows only about as much as the player does if you just get kicked into the Wicked Hearts quest without that knowledge). I feel like I'm missing 70% of Gaspard's story, same with the other big players. I just force them to work together most of the time, doubt that'll hold a year, but I really passionately don't care what the Orlesian kindergarten does as long as they keep it together long enough for Corypheus to be beaten. My problem character: I have a hard time understanding people who greatly prefer Sloane as Kadara's ruler because I don't think anything about her personality or rulership style indicates she'll be able to hold on to power for long. Kadara is on a fast track to becoming Omega 2.0 and the woman is no Aria - even if she is probably more straight-forward and perhaps more honourable (in some respects) than Reyes. (I also think the game's writing is massively biased in favour of Reyes, perhaps because they expect you to already like Sloane because of, welp, another tie-in novel.)

toomanyclouds I agree about Sloane. She makes Angara pay for protection. Kadara is theirs. It is even implied that Sloane's people will try to attack your outpost. Reyes may be shady bastard, but he gives most of the power to the Angara and at least dances with me.

I don't understand people, who consider Solas and/or Loghain more acceptable, than Anders.

Abelas. I just don't get it, other than he's a really really old elf. His thighs are alarmingly bendy looking, too.
Gaspard. He's a whiny old warmonger with disturbingly large ears.
Solas, to a degree. He's definitely interesting but the way he's become the defining character in fandom and the love for his romance isn't exactly something I can relate to, lol. But different strokes for different folks and I do get the appeal of a broody demi-god, no matter how strangely shaped his head is.

Not gonna lie, I'd probably read Uprising if Kandros was awake because I like him, but I don't think he is and I don't really care about anyone in the Nexus leadership that much. Also, I haven't the best experience with video game tie-in novels. I mean, to be fair, the ME writers are not responsible for Karin Traviss' amazingly terrible Gears of War tie-in stuff, but once bitten, twice shy.

There's been a shady apostate for f/m, m/f, and m/m. Never for f/f. I want that shit for f/f. Everyone else should get their fluff, but give me the drama, backstabbing, crazy reveals, etc. I swear, they know lesbian relationships can be dramatic (see: Celene/Briala) but they almost never give us those morally ambiguous complicated lesbian romantic arcs for the player character. EDIT: Sorry, I know I'm a broken record by now.
