Any other horror movie fans in here? RT Best Horror Movies of All TimeWhat's your favourite type, slasher, psychological horror, torture porn, monster horror, comical horror, j-horror, paranormal horror etc? Any recommendations? Last horror movie I saw was Alien Covenant, it had it's good moments but damn there was ALOT of dumb in it too, plenty of unintentional hilarious moments in it. edit: for typos

YESSSS I love horror movies for real! (I write about them for a living even)
My tastes in the genre are kind of always changing. I have a huge soft spot forever for 80s slashers, but lately what I like most tends to be more in the supernatural vein. And I'll watch pretty much any Asian horror flick, even if it's bad.
Ahhh I could talk about horror movies all day. Still gotta see Covenant, bummed it's not getting great reviews.

Oh dear, I think... I think I love you? That is awesome! Yiss, share your knowledge of horror. 80s slasher flicks, pretty fun, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, glorious. (rofl) Covenant, I enjoyed it more than Prometheus but gah, Ridley what are you doing to the established lore my guy? Michael Fassbender is excellent in it, worth the ticket price at least and damn, was this movie gory. I flinched and winched many times watching it.

I freakin love horror movies, which I shouldn't cause my imagination easily gets the better of me and I end up not sleeping the night after seeing them usually. Especially the case with ghost movies, which are my favorites. Haven't seen many that I really liked recently though. It Follows being the last one I liked, and more for it's originality than anything else.
I watched another on Amazon last week called "The Caller", which was pretty interesting. It wasn't scary, just kind of a modern Twilight Zone story about a woman who begins receiving phone calls from another woman living 30 years in the past, who then begins to ruin her life.
But i can't bring up Horror and not ask about the upcoming IT. It was the one movie i would watch over and over as a child, scared the hell out of me and i loved it. I'm somewhat skeptical of the remake coming out, I'm worried it's gonna rely on modern tactics of jump scares. On the plus side, if the entire movie takes place in the past, that sets them up for a sequel taking place when they are adults, like the original movie.
Are people hyped about the remake? Apprehensive?

Oh dear, I think... I think I love you? That is awesome! Hee hee hee...oh my! It's nice because now that the torture pr0n (for lack of a better term) cycle has ended and there's been some recent blockbusters (The Conjuring, Get Out, etc) I don't get the "how can you even LIKE that stuff?" question as much. I don't have to spend time trying to convince people that I'm not some depraved psychopath because I like horror movies So I'm glad you get me for sure. I was so forgiving of Prometheus because I was dazzled by the sets and those space suits. (What can I say, I'm easy.) So I'll probably be pretty forgiving with Covenant, but I don't understand how Ridley Scott has gotten so far off-track. Like, Alien is legitimately one of the greatest films of all time, never mind one of the greatest horror or sci-fi films. Then again, a lot of the best genre directors kind of...mmm, fall off, shall we say, as the years go on. Have you played Alien: Isolation? I thought it was a bit too long but I friggin loved it. And playing as the original Nostromo crew in the DLC was brillllliant.

Apprehensive? I need to check out It Follows, a different twist on the final girl virgin trope. Heard good things about it. Never heard of The Caller, sounds interesting. As for Stephen King's IT, ugh, nightmare fuel as a kid. Still remember this, gah... That movie scared the bejebus outta me. I'm also wary of re-makes, they usually suck ass. Oh dear, I think... I'm sure you're also watching American Horror Story, love that horror anthology series although, the later seasons I've felt have been pretty meh. Season 1 & 2 were my favs. Ridley has two more prequels in the works apparently, just, so much of what happened in Covenant, I'm scratching my head as to how this will all tie into the original Alien. I'm sure it will all fall into place with the next two movies, hopefully. I'll still check em out, I love this franchise too much to not. Oh, fuck yeah I played Alien: Isolation, loved it, goddamn alien killed me soooooooooooo many times tho.

I have pretty clear memories as a child of being afraid of opening my eyes when i tried to go to sleep, that there would suddenly be balloons floating in my room. We All Float Down Here
Oh, and i have to give a shout out to Ginger Snaps.

I just logged into my Netflix account, gonna check out the re-make of Evil Dead. I heard it's awful. I really enjoyed the original, let's just see how bad this is.

The original is one of my favorites, and while it's never been high art or anything, the remake can't really hold a candle to it. I think it largely went over well with fans because it's gory as all heck, but I didn't like it much at all. I definitely felt like I was in a minority at the time, though. Actually that happens pretty often I liked It Follows well enough (the soundtrack in particular is A+++), but I thought it ran out of steam and collapsed under its own weight by the end. Last theatrical release that really wowed me was The VVitch...horror needs more witch movies, dang it. Someone recently recommended Under the Shadow to me–that's one that didn't get a lot of notice but man, it was great.

Unlike the original with it's 80's schlock gory charm, this was just fuckin' gross and none of the characters were likeable/made me give a shit about em. The ending was dumb too. I should have watched Neon Demon instead. And as a horror fan I recommend this very enjoyable self-aware romp to the genre... if you haven't played it before, do it.

I've heard complaints that it's totally style over substance but...so? That's not always a bad thing. And EFF YEAH I LOVE UNTIL DAWN. Even though I made several bad decisions and only two people got out alive on my first run. Emily was (of course) irritating until the mine sequence when she became a total BAMF and I was more determined than ever that she'd live through the night. (She didn't.) I'm not sure if Starry Eyes is still on Netflix, but if it is I **highly** recommend it. So good. And if there was any justice in this world and horror was treated like a legit film genre, Alex Essoe would have been nominated for her performance.

She survived the night with me, they all did, except for Sam. Starry Eyes, never heard of it. Oh cool, just looking now, it is on Netlix, will watch this later, cheers. I see Cabin in the Woods is back on Netflix, OTT horror fun, how much monster mayhem can one fit into a movie? (rofl)

Until Dawn was gr8
I'm not super into horror movies, but I like psychological horror. Any recommendations? The only caveat is no animals being hurt. (And that I'm not really into gore or jump scares but will tolerate them if needed. Lol)

I like horror movies, but I really prefer the old black & white scary movies overall. Doubt they even count as horror by today's standards. For the more modern ones, I like pretty much everything that isn't full of blood/gore. Can't stand that stuff. No killing animals either. Poltergeist is probably my favorite movie of the genre.

I checked that out last night, whoa, that was dark and twisted af. Enjoyed it tho. Satanism, yup, when that theme is in a movie you know it's going down a dark deep rabbit hole. Some scenes were really fuckin' hard to watch, her transformation, her body rotting, ugh, very well done but jesus. I never heard of that lead actress before, but she was fantastic. Her fit scenes, her night of murder, hard viewing and pretty disturbing tbh. Selling your soul to the devil, sacrifices must be made, damn that night of murder was gory. My innocent eyes! Her pals weren't even assholes really, I felt so bad for em, they didn't deserve that. Until Dawn was gr8 I'm not super into horror movies, but I like psychological horror. Any recommendations? I loved the implication at the end that this is just the way Hollywood works. Rita Hayworth selling her soul, I dig it. It's an obvious metaphor but it worked so well. (And having lived in LA...her asshole friends were spot-on portrayals *shudder*) Such a brilliant performance, I haven't seen her in anything since but I hope she gets the chance to work more. Satanism + body horror is pretty much an automatic A from me

What an awesome thread! Yeah, I'm totally into horror movies too. It's definitely my favorite genre. On days when I'm off, I usually scan through the horror section of my on demand or netflix and just run a series of horror movies on the background while I'm online or doing work or just hanging out. My favorite movie of all time is Alien (the original). It's just perfection. In every way. The rest of the franchise? Not so much (Aliens is good, but it's not really horror). Runner up? The Shining. I could watch it on loop. I hate Kubrick as a human being, but he was a brilliant filmmaker. And The Shining is his best work, I think. I'm also a huge fan of 80's slasher flicks. I can't even begin to count the number of times that I've seen all of the Friday the 13th series (Parts 1-5 are the best), Nightmare on Elm Street series (Parts 1, 3, & 4 are the best, with a special totally unrelated gay-stravaganza shout out to part 2 and it's blatant homoeroticism), Halloween (Part 1 is the best slasher movie of all time), etc. This thread would totally be interested in this topic (I talked about it in the "what are you currently playing" thread): I downloaded the new Friday the 13th game this weekend. If you aren't familiar with it, it's an assymetrical PvP multiplayer game. 7 on 1 with the majority of the players being counselors and one person being Jason. The goal for the counselors is to escape (Spoiler: Jason is WAY OP on purpose, so mostly you get killed in awesome and gruesome ways). You can do that several ways: by finding the phone box fuse, fixing the phone, calling the cops, waiting for them to arrive, and then making to them before Jason gets you; by finding the car battery, fuel, and keys for one of the cars and driving out before Jason gets you; by finding the fuel and propeller, fixing the boat, and sailing away before Jason finds you. Or you can kill Jason, but that's almost impossible to do in a real match. There are 10 counselor types (all based off of classic F13 character types like: The Final Girl, The Head Counselor, The Flirty Girl, The Rocker Girl, The Preppy Guy, etc.). They all have different stats so you can play them differently. My personal favorite right now is the Rocker Girl because she doesn't frighten easily (so she doesn't trip or panic), is pretty smart (so she can fix thing easily), and is stealthy (so Jason can't find her unless she's panicking). And there are about 10 Jason types based off of all of the movies. The game itself is amazing, but opening weekend was a disaster. Straight up. It's an indie developer and they just weren't prepared. They are launching on three platforms (Steam, Xbox One, and PS4) and their servers all crashed launch date. And when they crashed, they corrupted user data, so even when the servers went live again, a bunch of people had corrupted data files and couldn't access the game. Top that off with a broken "random lobby search" function (meaning that you can only play if you can host a private match and invite people or be invited directly) and no penalty for host dropping, and it's been a total shit show. I had been trying all weekend and only got to play about 6 matches (~10-15 mins each), so that's not good. But once they work all of the issues all out, I'm going to lose DAYS of my life to this game. I can tell. You should definitely check it out and if you play on Xbox One, let me know and we'll play together. It would be an honor to smash your sleeping bag against a tree!

As for Starry Eyes I'll have to trust you on the LA asshole pals, that is a foreign land to me. Okay but, her last pal didn't deserve to get the kiss of death, literally, she didn't seem that bad. I'd be no good as satanic spawn.
