Honestly, their obsession with Kassandra has gotten really stale. How many characters in Vallhalla were her with a different voice actor? seriously there are so many women that have her exact face and hair...it's creepy at this point. Or maybe it's just me? I only really noticed it with Randvi - Randvi has the EXACT same hair style as Kassandra, and her VA definitely sounds similar.
Still... Yeah, now that you mention it, the use of Kassandra really is starting to come across as bordering on fetishistic, similar to the handling of the asari for BioWare, that it comes across as the developers having a boner for the character, as opposed to her being a fit for these kinds of moments.
Like, yes, in absolute fairness, the Eagle Bearer spent a good two thousand years, waiting for Layla to arrive at Atlantis, there's every reason to assume that they were interacting with the world beyond just hanging around the entrance in that time. But wouldn't it make more sense for that to have been part of Odyssey's DLC, where we could play it and experience it with OUR PERSONAL Eagle Bearer? (Certainly would take that over Legacy of the First Blade...)
Come to think of it, now that I mention Legacy of the First Blade, this feels like doing exactly that same shit all over again, trying to establish a "connection" to the greater tapestry of the franchise, while managing to undermine the player choice that was such a selling point of the base game...
So huzzah, Ubisoft. You have learned ABSOLUTELY nothing.

Oh.
Oh, I just had a BAD, uncomfortable thought about this "Fated Encounter" nonsense.
So I poked around some of the videos, wondering if anyone was going to say that it's... not a good look to explicitly invalidate the way that a number of players played in the previous game, especially after the DLC that invalidated being gay or even just not choosing to have kids.
Apparently, in these files, Valka, the seer, is part of the prompt for this whole questline. And she makes a comment about thinking Randvi is involved, which, I assume is a reference to the fact that Randvi looks a lot like Kassandra.
What if they're doing this all to say that Kassandra is some relation to Randvi, bank on the "identical ancestor" crap they have in the past, and the Eivor should find a way to "carry forth" the bloodline with her? (Yes, I know, "canon" says that Eivor is a woman, but Isu shenanigans have pulled crazier stunts than getting Randvi pregnant with Eivor's DNA...) Given the bloodline bullshit in this franchise (THAT HASN'T EVEN PLAYED A PART SINCE BLACK FLAG RENDERED IT MOOT AND SAID YOU NO LONGER NEEDED TO BE A DESCENDANT OF WHOEVER YOU WERE VIEWING!), the fact that Legacy of the First Blade was shoved on us in an effort to tie the Eagle Bearer to the protagonists of Origins, whose bloodline explicitly DEADENDS as a part of the primary plot... I am uncomfortable AT BEST with this idea, and it's unpleasantly got enough foundation...
Y'know, I was already saying that I didn't particularly want to play something that invalidated the way that I played Odyssey, and wasn't looking forward to playing this "Fated Encounter" questline. This... This is all the more reason NOT to play...

Honestly, I just really think Assassin's Creed DLC is best avoided in general. I can't think of any dlc of theirs I liked save for Freedom Cry (which was sold as a stand-alone product as well). Even that I could have skipped if I'm being real-as I loved the storyline-it was still a really short black flag game play-wise.

The Jack the Ripper DLC for Syndicate was pretty good. Though I might be biased because Syndicate is probably my favorite of the PS4 era games - it may not be particularly innovative in terms of mechanics, but it knows what it's doing and does it well.
And, honestly, the Fate of Atlantis DLC wasn't that bad. Plus, as a fan of the modern storyline, I was damn glad to see it get some time to shine, even if it decides that it wants to try for some emotions it had made no effort to earn.

I still haven't played Syndicate! I need to do that someday. I also haven't played any of the ac 2 trio of games, 3, or AC: Black flag 2, erm rogue. However, I don't know if I want to go back to them at this point. I really only started to be wowed by the games when they went away from the traditional mechanics. Rogue I know should appeal to me since I loved black flag so maybe someday. So many games, so little money/time/attention span.

So the Kassandra dlc is out today. It's apparently an update for Odyssey and Valhalla both. A 2 part mission. You can play the first half as Alexios (or Kass) but in Valhalla only Kassadra will turn up and you play as evior as per usual. I don't think Evior is in the origin part-but I really don't know for sure. As I have no interest in the dlc given Alxeios is not in the second half.

Yeah, I’m debating watching the cutscene collection that just went up on YouTube, just to KNOW what happens and if it goes to the bad place I feared above, but... I really have no interest in ever playing this, because I wouldn’t be encountering MY character. My Eagle Bearer was Alexios, and he was forced to kill Kassandra after she killed Myrienne on Mount Taygetos. That was the Odyssey I played.
What I want is to have my choices respected. It’s not a “boo, I don’t like Kassandra” thing like I’m sure many of the assholes out there would twist my words in to. It’s “I played in this manner, I played a game that offered me choices, and now they’re coming along and tell me my choices don’t matter and this other thing happened instead.”
Y’know, like they did for Legacy of the First Blade.
Can these chucklefucks actually LEARN from their mistakes?!

For the sake of knowing, I watched the cutscene compilation.
Nothing about this NEEDED to happen, or needed to involve an actual appearance from the Eagle Bearer. It would have worked just as well if it had been Eivor receiving a letter somehow addressed from the Eagle Bearer, allowing the player to choose who’d have a voice over cameo. Maybe even better , because all the visual references they throw in to Odyssey... really don’t mean anything other than “hey, it’s that thing from Odyssey!”
Also felt uncomfortably like they were trying to do some ship-teasey stuff of Eivor and Kassandra. Especially with the otherwise pointless conflation of Kassandra and Randvi that amounts to nothing as is. They didn’t go there, but it felt like they were leaving that door open for some future content, and... Ugh.
Like the second and third episodes of Legacy of the First Blade, I have no intention of playing this for myself.
The Isle of Skye Seer, Edyt, was voiced by Robyn Addison, Sera’s VA. Her laugh was unmistakable. So that was nifty. Just so I end this on a positive note.

Also felt uncomfortably like they were trying to do some ship-teasey stuff of Eivor and Kassandra. I played through the whole thing 3 times and never felt anything but possible friendship between them tbh. I loved the quest and wish there was more of Kassandra in the future since they already announced a support for another year so up until at least Nov 2022 if not the end of 2022. I also loved how, if you romanced Randvi, Eivor has specific dialogue lines that are not there if you didn't romance her. For my fem Eivor and her wifey that's a lot.

Get hype for another gay letdown! March 10 and the next expansion drops! Whooo!
Yes, I'm aware that I'm abusing sarcasm at this point, but... Dammit, I actually DO like this franchise and this game. Pity it doesn't return the favor.

*sigh*
The DLC is like 95% of Eivor running around as Havi, the Odin persona, so there's no opportunity for ANY romance, since we're not really playing Eivor, but an actual Norse God.
Also, for something called "Dawn of Ragnarok," it's very focused on the "Dawn," not so much the "Ragnarok" - literally, it's not acknowledged as the start of Ragnarok until the after-credits scene.
Not really bad, but... I wish I'd waited for a sale or something. It feels unfinished to me, since that title is a promise of Ragnarok, and Ragnarok doesn't actually happen in the course of it.
I have heard rumors that a fourth DLC is getting turned into its own spinoff game (which would fit a concluding narration from Eivor that felt hastily tacked on as something that served to wrap up their story), which, if that's the case, I'm willing to guess that there was some idea of there being more to this, either in this DLC or the next, which is now going in to that spin-off title. But it still leaves me feeling underwhelmed by Dawn of Ragnarok.

I don't like the sounds of them making yet more Odin content-but maybe it'll be more Evior centered next time (if it even happens). Either way, I'm probably not getting this dlc either. -shrug- It's odd that I used to get all dlc for games I like, but honestly ubisoft dlc just seems like worse versions of the main game that cost a lot more if you compare the playtime per dollar ratio. But hey...I might just be old and cranky.

They’re doing that Isle of Skye shit again with “the Final Chapter.” Cutscenes will feature conversations with Odin conversing with Eivor, and Eivor will always be portrayed as female in them.
Like what’s the point of offering a choice if you’re just going to turn around and go “it doesn’t matter what YOU chose, THIS version is the only one that REALLY matters”? Eivor only as a woman? Fine! Only Kassandra as the Eagle Bearer? Okay! But if we get the choice, RESPECT IT!

That's kinda shitty honestly, I don't know why they do that other than saving budget or something because it totally just fucks over players whose 'canon' is the other choice. Why even offer a gender select if only female Eivor (or Kassandra) are only even going to be seen as the 'canon' choice in stuff like this. Either don't include them, or make it work for both available choices. You can't give people the freedom to pick their story and then slap them on the wrist in dlc and tell them they picked wrongly.

No other gaming company disrespects their fanbase more than ubisoft, some do it in different ways for sure...but their dlc is just god awful at this point-in just not respecting choice at all.
