It's weird there is no thread about this game! Since I'm playing right now to calm my thrist til BG3 and there's a sequel in development I thought about starting the thread, it has the three elements which are a must in a rpg for me: story-driven single player game, character creator and a bae to love! Some quests fail if you progress the main story too much so I will post this here since its very helpful. About the beloved,- as the game calls your romance interest- I read is very tricky to get the one you want, I'm only in stage 1 but it seems you need max their affinity + talk to him/her the last before doing Deny Salvation quest which seems a point of no return or final quest, I have no idea what this is about but I studied to not fuck it up lol pretty much every single npc can be your beloved so be careful. Some characters have more content than others and everyone is bi, the romance system is akin to Skyrim (the game as whole is the japanese version of Skyrim tbh) but I think its a little more better since there are actual cutscenes. One thing though, only a few female characters have extra dialogues in one of the last romance scenes, so yeah the game was thought with straight men in mind, something than my sapphic sisters benefit fortunetely since everyone is bi. Male characters do have that scene, but it does not have dialogues sadly. There's no companions per se, but there are pawns that follow you and help you, these pawns are not romanceable, they are not even humans (the lore is weird and I dont understand it ). I'm not a big fan of this system, I prefer my companions to be actual people but it is what it is! I'm intrigued about the sequel though, hoping the game is better and let us have different save files (doing lots of back ups just in case I fuck it up on pc lol) edit: About the game choosing your beloved I found this: edit: CAUTION
edit. there is a "forced" romance with the duchess if you want to have the hero achievement so when you first see her dont speak to her to avoid her two-part quest line (the game literally zooms to her to be explicit about her), easy as that, it is totally skippable if you dont mind not getting the hero achievement.

I've tried to play this game at least half a dozen times (and bought it twice) and I just cannot get into it despite how many good things I've heard.

I've tried to play this game at least half a dozen times (and bought it twice) and I just cannot get into it despite how many good things I've heard. the game is definitely a hit and miss in many aspects but if you have an itch for a Skyrim-esque game this is for you! It's a lot of shorter than Skyrim which for me is a win (I really dont care of doing everything in open worlds lol) but there're things like the lack of a save file system or unlimited fast travel which test my personal patience. I think is harder than Skyrim but I guess I'm just bad at the game lol The romance is cuter too (I spoiled myself watching some vids) and mandatory since it's linked to the story (which can be a weak spot for some people). I hope they improve the beloved system in the second one, but I guess years have to pass to know what's going to happen. Also there are some things that put me off about the beloved system... like ... There's a female 100+years old character with the appearance of a child (she is one of those female characters having unique lines) it's very evident that is a japanese game and it gives me the yucks I dont have the patience to deal with long ass isometric rpgs so I will draw a veil over that and just enjoy the romance with Reynard (I think he is the cutest male character), after the bug mess that The Waylanders was I need it lmao

I picked up the game years ago but never got around to playing it because I read so many things about how annoying it was to get the romance/beloved you wanted because of the affinity system and how you could easily lock yourself into the wrong character because of it or by doing certain quests. It felt like too much effort so I never gave it a chance.

I sweearr!! There's a hot blonde knight that starts as villain and then you can turn him good or something, your kind of jam Far!!! Also summoning Andrew Mancer for blonde reasons I chose Reynard cause he seems like a dork and he is just a peddler, the dynamic of inoffensive peddler + powerful sorcerer is just fun to me haha, the peddler is topping the all mighty sorcerer tho edit. if you guys play on pc just make sure to follow that guide if you care of doing every single side quests that is non-notice board quests (these ones are endless and useless except some of them) to get the Hero achievement and do back ups, believe me lifesaver!

If I ever gave it a shot I'm sure I would have to follow a guide to not unlock the wrong Beloved. I read way too many horror stories about it back in the day when I first looked into the game, and how certain quests can lock you into certain romantic encounters. Bleh. If they do make a second game I hope that's something they fix.

I have been summoned! Lol yes, you know me all too well!!! He's totally the type I would have gone for!
I've heard about this game over the years. If I remember right it was the type I probably would've picked out in high school with my siblings. (Perhaps there was even a demo of it? My memory is failing me.) Can't say I know exactly what it is off the top of my head though. I'll have to look into it but yeah as has been mentioned I do remember reading about the weird romance system in this game!
I'll definitely be using a guide to make sure I don't mess it up lol. I hate that I'm too busy with school/teaching to pick up a new game right now but it will be on my list!
Hope the second game does the "romance" better!

I own the game on ps3. I loaded it up one time and died horribly in the first combat I encountered...turned it off and never started it up again. That being said, I would probably be curious if a second game happens with a better romance system and such.

That being said, I would probably be curious if a second game happens with a better romance system and such. yeah the game is painfully hard at the beginning I just learnt the meteorite spell and that thing is kinda op lmao but yeah, super hard I'm still in stage 2 but I will let you know guys when it's the precise moment when the game choose your beloved since I have several saves in several folders lmao this game aint going to fuck me up also I did two escort quests (no mandatory for the hero achievement) and they are just meh, no story at all and totally skippable, I did Reynard (my future bae, for obvious reasons) and Mercedes (the best female npc and female KISA totally worth it for my sapphic sisters) just because I like those characters but there's no reason to do them for the story CAUTIONedit. there is a "forced" romance with the duchess if you want to have the hero achievement so when you first see her dont speak to her to avoid her two-part quest line (the game literally zooms to her to be explicit about her lol), easy as that, it is avoidable fortunately but now I need to get back cause I dont want to deal with her character fucking yikes she is a treacherous bitch and you can see it on youtube anyway to see how cringey her quest line is lol

I just defeated the dragon and got the character I wanted as beloved, just giving the ring to him before Deny Salvation quest, so yep the first part is confirmed. I think you guys have it way more easier with Julien (the hot knight) cause once you do what you have to do, he does not leave the game unlike Reynard or other characters after finishing their personal quest (like Mercerdes, Madeleine, Quina just in case sapphic sisters would read this or Valmiro if you are into him). Now I need to do post game to see the second part where the game chooses again your beloved which it's just bad design cause when you save your beloved from the dragon the character moves to your house lmao it doesnt make sense but I will let you know guys the second point of no return to "choose" the beloved (it should be easier since the character is in your house so you would only need to speak to him/her) The romance scene was sweet but short however something solid and better than the wedding in Skyrim lol, in this case Reynard has special dialogue when he moves to your house and according to wikia it is the same for characters mentioned before. PS. The game is still stupidly hard for me even though I'm an all powerful sorcerer now, I'm dreading the dlc content lol Another PS. You can make almost everyone the beloved, I'm just talking about those characters cause they felt plot-relevant or have quest-lines but there are some cute ones like Ser Maximilian, sadly his content is minimal. oooh another one: I'm not mentioning the duchess, fuck her haha

XD I'm not sure I'll get around to trying it as I don't like super hard combat, but Julien is tempting - though if he stays perma in prison after you resurrect him after that fight with Mercedes then it might not be as fun as idk how that would work as a romance. XD
Good luck with the rest and I hope it doesn't screw over your Beloved for the second game part.

yeah haha he turns himself in after you resurrect him with a wakestone cause he is a man of honor and after the final battle he should be on your home forever, narrative-wise it doesnt make sense but you can headcanon that killing the dragon gives you some authority? Julien was doing bad things for the good reasons, sadly the game just falls short in character deparment and there's wasted pontential right there (kinda reminds me to Danse and his lack of character development after you turn the BoS into dust) but to be fair this game is not something to play for its story, like take the duchess for example, she tries to fuck you, get caught, blame you to save herself, you are in prison and then the duke is like nothing happened after that (duchess quest line is so fucking cringe, just ignore her character guys) Researching the beloved system I spoiled myself the story and I mean, it's fine but this is not Dragon Age or even Skyrim. Also I hope the pawn lore is no more in the second game, I would love actual companions, the fact you gotta be changing pawns cause they dont level up just puts me in a situation that I dont care about them, they feel like tools and not actual beings, the ones I use I put them in the favorite list just to try a headcanon where my character cares about them haha although there is some part of their lore that I find interesting. If you are thristing for a little gay rpg shit that is not classic isometric rpg (like me!) and dont have anything else, play the game, I mean it's fun and the romance is part of the main plot in the end, and who knows maybe DD2 will improve it (or make everyone straights lol who knows with Capcom). It's being a good entertainment for me til BG3 comes! PS. just make back ups if you play on pc, remember!

If he moves to your Homestead that's not so bad. I can easily head canon reasons why. If he'd been stuck in jail however, that would have made life harder lol. That's a shame about the pawn system, I agree, it does give you less reason to care about them if you're constantly having to swap them around.
I have other things I want to play right now, but I'll keep this game in mind should my game schedule free itself up a bit, or I get bored of what I'm currently playing.
Keep me updated on how things go though. XD

Finished the game! it wasnt a perfect playthrough, since I missed some memories of the Monument of Remembrance and you cant get them post-boss in the dlc (bad design and no way I would go through that hell again lol ), also the game kinda forces you to play NG+ cause you are too weak to save everyone in a boss fight in stage 5 (I guess it can be done but I tried a lot and gave up lol) but meh, what is perfection in a game like this I mean the dlc is intended to play it in NG+ cause those enemies there are insane, I did it with my 50 lvl sorcerer (ended up being 70 something by the end) but you gotta love cheesing the fights haha like... the final boss for some reason didnt use his second form and I'm grateful for that (it reminded me to the final boss in DOS2, I killed the bad guy too quickly and he didnt summon the kraken lmao) aaaaand the second part of the beloved system worked, so I think it's safe for you guys to try it haha First part is before Deny Salvation quest Second part is before delivering the 20 wakestones (I know this doesnt make sense now but you will understand once you get there haha) just make sure you speak to your bae before that. I regret saying the story and lore isnt as big as Dragon Age, it was really cool and the revelation in the end left me potatoes if I'm being honest Arisen's story is pretty much done in this game so Dragon's Dogma 2 should have an entire new lore and protagonist (at least that is what I'm hoping for lol), wondering if they will keep the beloved system again in the second game, if so I hope it's improved, it would be nice to have like 3 options per gender instead of everyone and the machine randomizing your choice lmao about the pawns, from what I get reading people on the internet, they loved it so I dont think is going anywhere, I hope they get deep into their lore in the second game because there are so much to tell about them. edit. one thing I DEMAAAND in the second game is a save system, such a bad design

Yeah, games that only have autosave make me nervous. If you have ever gotten a corrupted save file in any game you can probably understand why. You need at least 1 backup save at all times darn it! One of the reasons I can't get into farming games is most of them only save when you end the day. I know you can end days early-but it just feels so messy (especially when so many aspects of those games have you on timers tied to that same day and night system). You want to go eat dinner, too bad you fail that mission if you don't do the thing for the next 2 hours in real-time...cause sleeping pushes you past the deadline.

Glad you finished the game and things ended well for you! Hopefully if there is a 2nd game they will improve on the various things that aren't so good about the first one like the Beloved system, no forced things like the Duchess quest, and ew, a game with only auto saves or no manual saves? I generally hate games that rely on auto saves generally because you might need to quit the game but have no idea when the next autosave will be so have to risk it. I much prefer games where I can make manual saves (and being able to quicksave whenever I want, especially in an rpg, is also an added bonus.) Maybe I will brave the game at some point, but the clunky combat and Beloved system still makes me a little nervous for now. Maybe Julien will be worth it.

So...I saw the game was on sale for less than 5 bucks on both Xbox and PS4. I decided to get the xbox version since I could use MS points (thus getting it for free). I couldn't bare the thought of playing the ps3 version since that's just not convenient anymore for various reasons. So far I have gotten to the point where I fought the hydra, and I'm having a much easier time of things than I did my first go-round. I'm playing as a strider atm (first run I picked mage). I'm not very good at aiming my bow thus far...but hey the game is progressing so it's not all bad news.

You can manual save but there's only one! haha that's why I totally recommend to have lots of folders with saves with every single point you think the game is going to screw you up (like the beloved choice for example haha) Julien is totally for you my dear even if the game falls short in character development I'm sure you are going to fill those gaps, you are the master of headcanoning haha I'm playing as a strider atm (first run I picked mage). I'm not very good at aiming my bow thus far...but hey the game is progressing so it's not all bad news. GREAAAT, please let us know your progress! Strider is definitely a good class, I didnt use it myself but every single time I looked for tips on defeating bosses pretty much everybody was using an archer class (strider, ranger or magical archer) Who do you want as beloved?

I'm probably going for Julien assuming I don't screw something up. I found a guide on Steam that gives the order to do all the quests for the hero achievement. While I'm not too fussed with that it is useful in finding side quests as they are not very obvious at all! My next quest to do is "lost and found" since I finally managed to kill the lizards in the well. It wasn't too bad, but the first time I tried it really early on, and died horribly. I'm almost level 10...and I really wish these quests had level recommendations! But hopefully, I'll muddle through.

Julien is the easier choice to not screw things up imo since he doesnt go away from the game unlike Valmiro or Reynard, so I think if you are careful you are fine! From the look of it I think I followed the same guide (the one posted above) and it worked really well for me, just remember to ignore the duchess (if you want the hero achievement you need to endure a forced romance with her). I totall recommend doing the sidequests since they expand the story quite well in my opinion but the duchess... it's just a waste of time and totally violates player's agency. (if your character is bi and a total horndog I'd say go for it though lmao)
