Welcome to the Tomb Raider discussion thread created in collaboration with the awesome Scottphoto ! For all the uninitiated, here's a not-so-quick rundown of the franchise's history.
In 1996 British game developer Core Design and publisher Eidos Interactive released Tomb Raider, a 3D adventure puzzle-platformer starring treasure hunter Lara Croft. The game was a huge success and its protagonist soon became a global phenomenon, being featured on countless mainstream magazine covers, starring in advertisements, music videos, her own comic book series and even getting her own brand of chocolate bars. Eidos and Core Design were eager to cash in on their creation's popularity and quickly released Tomb Raider II only one year after the first game in 1997. Tomb Raider III and Tomb Raider IV: The Last Revelation followed in 1998 and 1999, respectively. The annual release schedule, however, took its toll on both the developers and the game's commercial and critical reception. With the Playstation 2's release looming on the horizon, it was decided that after one more Playstation instalment, 2000's Tomb Raider: Chronicles, Core Design would be granted some time to bring the franchise into the new century. In the meantime, Hollywood had discovered Lara Croft's huge commercial potential and started to produce a Tomb Raider film starring Angelina Jolie simply titled Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) which released to negative reviews but was a box office success. In 2003 the next game in the series, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness, finally released. However, due to a troubled development and publisher Eidos' financial woes, the game released in an unfinished, buggy state and was widely panned by critics and players as a result. A month later, a second film starring Angelina Jolie was released, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. It was received slightly better by critics than the first film but performed considerably worse commercially. Core Design era mainline games:
Following the underwhelming launch of Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness, Eidos reevaluated the franchise's direction and subsequently moved its development into the hands of US studio Crystal Dynamics who rebooted the series with Tomb Raider: Legend (2006). This new entry took in the series' core elements and redesigned them for the modern gaming landscape. While some fans bemoaned many of the changes made to the Tomb Raider formula, Legend was well-received by most critics and put the franchise back on track commercially. In 2007, Crystal Dynamics released a remake of the first, classic Tomb Raider game with Tomb Raider Anniversary (2007) which adapted the first game's story to Legend's timeline of events. These games' stories would then culminate in the final instalment of the trilogy, Tomb Raider: Underworld (2008). Unfortunately, Underworld was not as well as received as the previous two instalments and thus led the team at Crystal Dynamics to reevaluate and reboot the franchise once more. LAU era mainline games:
In 2013 Square Enix, who had now acquired Tomb Raider's publisher Eidos, released Crystal Dynamics' second attempt at rebooting the Tomb Raider franchise. Simply titled Tomb Raider, the game brought many changes with it, both to Lara's character and appearance and to the series' gameplay formula, dropping the franchise's previous focus on puzzles and platforming in favour of third-person shooter gameplay with survival elements. The game's tone also presented a dramatic shift for the series, being much grittier and earning the franchise its first M rating. Tomb Raider 2013 was a critical success and although Square Enix was disappointed by the game's early sales performance, it eventually proved to be a commercial success, as well. Old-school fans were once again divided on the franchise's new direction, though the reboot also introduced many new fans to the series. The game's sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider, released in 2015 as a timed Xbox exclusive which caused a lot of controversy and outrage due to the series' strong historical ties to Playstation platforms and the large amount of fans who did not own an Xbox console. This presumably dampened the game's sales, although it was well-received by critics. After the release of its PS4 version a year later, rumours about the next game have started to surface. According to these, it will be called Shadow of the Tomb Raider and is currently being developed by Eidos Montreal. Meanwhile, a new Tomb Raider film is currently being filmed based on the rebooted games and starring Alicia Vikaner as Lara Croft. The new film is expected to release in March 2018. Reboot era mainline games:

One of my all time favorite series. I have to say, my favorite is probably Legend. I have played through it countless of times and I love all the levels in it.
Does anyone remember how weird the first level of Tomb Raider 3 is though? UGH . It was a horror for me figuring out where to go past the first area with the switch, monkeys and the water current.

Yay the thread turned out amazing looking, love the visuals you picked! JewlieGhoulie my favorite is Legend as well! It was my first one too, I dig the japan level a lot lol because it was an unexpected change of scenery. Sad Underworld didn't live up to that game. I need to take some time to play through all the classics. I liked the Angelina movies as trippy popcorn flicks, without taking them seriously of course. I feel this new movie will try too hard to be serious and it won't work but we'll see.

I only started my first playthrough of Tomb Raider 3 last year and I thought pretty much the whole India section was pretty terrible TBH. Nevada is awesome, though! My favourite of the games is probably Angel of Darkness but that's at least partly because I know so much about what it was supposed to be like if they'd had the time to finish it and things had gone according to plan. So much potential. Definitely had the best soundtrack and the best story out of any of the games. Funnily enough, though, I tend to love 3D platforming and AoD is the Core game with the weakest platforming.

With the King Arthur Museum? That was so dope. Frhozen Angel of Darkness ...is that the one where Lara is running from the cops and that guy is in the game too as a playable character at one point? I liked that one too, if I am remembering it correctly.

I MISS CLASSIC LARA Tomb Raider is like my ALL TIME FAVORITE VIDEOGAME!!! And Lara is my favorite vg character!!! I miss my Lara, my sassy, mature and ruthless Lara Croft! My fav TR games are TR1, TR3, TR4 and TRAoD (about this one the plot is marvelous, the gameplay is shit) I played the reboot and I liked it as an origin story, the ending with the dual pistols was a beautiful and epic moment, BUT when the news of the sequel started to pop up I was really sad, the surpernatural elements are reduced and almost gone, the fucking bow can go to hell, gimme my dual pistols!!! The Lara I knew is gone and I'm here mourning The day this new Lara becomes the Lara I love maybe will be the day I play the sequels of the reboot.

But since Steam makes good sales I may grab it eventually once I run through the classics.

I know that Tomb Raider reboot was a.... origin story? But, I still missed original Lara so much. I think it's because I REALLY got into gaming [excluding mario and like tetris because everyone pretty much plays those at some points ] because of my dad who was a big gamer and he showed me two games where I could be a B.A chick? That was Resident Evil and Tomb Raider as Jill Valentine and Lara Croft respectively. So, that Lara holds a special place in my heart much like Jill Valentine is special to me.

Louvre Storm Drains, Le Serpent Rouge, Aquatic Research Area,... But yeah, its controls really held it back. I kinda hate what the films and Crystal have done to Lara's backstory. Classic Lara was a rebel who got disowned by her parents for doing what she wanted to do and being who she wanted to be, LAU Lara on the other hand follows in her daddy's footsteps like a good little girl . And even reboot Lara has got the dead archaeologist daddy BS in her bio.

I'm glad Im not the only one who feel this way about the new games, there're out there fans who like them more than the classics, and I'm like wut!? NO

Claire is my favorite Resi chick , but Jill was my first. My favorite RE Games are 1 (and it's remake),2, And Code Veronica. BUT, YES THIS IS ABOUT LARA SORRY. I used to spend forever in Croft Manor btw. I bought the game on PS3 like two years ago just to play around in the Manor hahahah

To me, level design, puzzles, etc. are sort of part of that. Although the controls supposedly differ quite a bit between the PC and console versions. I've only ever played the PC version and found the controls to be pretty similar to the classics. Just less reliable . Though even there we've got two version of the bio, the TR1-3 one without Von Croy and the TR4-6 one with Von Croy. Personally, I prefer the one without him even though TR4-6 don't make all that much sense story-wise without him .

Don't hate me, but I like the new Lara. I got the latest game for Christmas last year and I still haven't played it. I am planning to play it this summer.

I have absolutely nothing against Lara being bi or gay but I kind of hate Sam with a passion LOL. She was such a flat, annoying character in the reboot, even moreso than most of the game's other characters. Personally, I'm kinda hoping that they won't feature her in any future games. Well him and Hoshi and Himiko but those two are only really characterised in journals so...
