The resident evil movies for the most part I don't mind but I will never forgive what they did to Nemesis.

Just came back from watching the new movie, I really like Alicia as Lara, her Lara has the personality that I love from Lara, an improvement in comparison to the reboot. there's one thing I didnt like tho the end of the movie with that lame explanation of Himiko myth, an infectious disease? really? What the heck is happening with all these live-action adaptations turning supernatural into lame science explanation? I mean the thing with Himiko was one of the few redeemable things the reboot had... Pretty meh.
the ending tho ME LIKE

the ending tho ME LIKE Yeah I agree that part ruined some overall plot things in the movie: the reason they couldn't get off the island was because Himiko wouldn't allow it in the game, makes the whole boat crashing and her father still being there sort of pointless in the film. Im fine they remove the whole, "we need to sacrifice females for Himiko" thing, but I think they could have kept some other supernatural elements like the storms. They where going to make them turn zombies anyway, so might as well give it some supernatural element. Sure she had the sickness, but I don't know maybe make it so that the host of the sickness still barely lives for years or something. The key to immortality but comes with a price. Many angles they could play with. But yeah Alicia makes the movie work so well in the long run.

I haven't seen the new movie yet so I can't comment specifically on how things were handled there but: The supernatural stuff is probably what I liked least about the rebooted games. I prefer my fantasy to be in its own setting, like Thedas, Middle Earth, Narnia or wherever, not the real world. In general I don't find scientific explanations to be lame in any way.

I agree with you although: I don't mind some supernatural stuff as long as its very minimal and its mostly strict to the artifact causing an effect on people. Like the first Indiana Jones for example if I remember correctly. The problem on this film though is that it hints supernatural stuff from the game but then when the time comes, the movie goes "but we are really not doing that approach", which is fine but it sort of leaves questions as to why certain things happened earlier on. But I think you will enjoy the film's plot more then for sure!

Tomb Raider franchise always has been based on the supernatural or heavy scifi elements, you take that away and it's not Tomb Raider anymore, the fact they lessened the supernatural elements in the reboot doesnt help but at least it's not a completely erasure of the franchise identity with Himiko's origin and that's why I'm still here waiting and hopeful for Shadow of the TR to be great giving me the Lara I love at the same time. As much as I liked the movie the revelation is just cheap and lame.

I always liked Tomb Raider games for the adventure and the puzzle solving. Since the reboot I also like them for characters and the emotional elements of the story. Supernatural stuff in the real world just isn't my bag and never has been. I tend to like shows and games that feature it in spite of rather than because of its presence.

I love fantasy and magic, but I don't like to pretend it's actually in this world, unless the reason why we don't see it regularly is explained, like in Harry Potter or some such. I prefer to escape normal life by going to the future or to an imagined realm like Thedas or Middle Earth.

I wouldn't go as far as say I pretend like its real, thats weird to me.

the ending tho ME LIKE Oh hard disagree there, what alot of detractors from the re-boot are ignoring is that the re-boot Lara is not going to be the iconic Lara that we know, she is becoming the Tomb Raider, it's a growing process, she is evolving into it. Besides unlike the old gen Lara I feel the re-boot Lara is more human, feels more real. I also didn't like Alicia as Lara, underwhelming and didn't have her essence imo, felt like a rich girl who goes on an adventure to find daddy.

Besides unlike the old gen Lara I feel the re-boot Lara is more human, feels more real. I also didn't like Alicia as Lara, underwhelming and didn't have her essence imo, felt like a rich girl who goes on an adventure to find daddy. That's the thing, that Alicia's Lara reminds way more to classic Lara than reboot Lara and that's why I really liked her performance. I know that is a growing process and that's why I said that I'm still waiting for this reboot Lara to become at least 40% of old Lara, I'm not giving up yet. I have to disagree, old Lara had a very defined personality, she was sarcastic, sassy, fearless and showed feelings when she had to, she became into more human-like with every game made, starting with Angel of the Darkness with Kurtis, her first kill in Anniversary and Legend trilogy with her mother. The argument about reboot Lara being more human are based on how she is "weaker" in the reboot and how these games have a core of characters for Lara to be connect with as human being, she had that in the past. I have to disagree about this too in the movie she has no money and refuses the heritage til the end of the movie. Reminds me how old Lara was disowned by her family and she had to build her money by herself. I cant bring myself liking reboot Lara because she is just unrecognizable as character for me and seeing Alicia with this audacious personality that I love from old Lara in the movie is just great, I miiiiiss her. I think the old Lara vs reboot Lara debate is never going to end but I wish Bioware never reboots Mass Effect with an unrecognizable Shepard in the future for example, it's like they took something that really matters to me since I was a child and boom it's gone for good. I hope the next game turns out to be great with just a tiny part of the Lara I love tho.

It's interesting reading all this since my tomb raider experience started with the reboot. I have no idea what old Lara was like so I guess I'm the control with these new games.

I think its always hard when there's a reboot or revision of a character, its bound to inevitably divide fandom. This is because some people identify with one version of the character and meant a lot to them, while the new version will also have its own new people identify or connect with more. Mass Effect didn't get rebooted exactly, but there's still that discussion on who identifies more with Shepard and who identifies more with Ryder.
Personally I feel sometimes, its just hard to recapture the magic you feel with the first games you play of a franchise too. Like for me, I haven't felt as happy with newer games of zelda, Sonic or mario like the first time I played through games of them. I enjoyed a lot the Tomb Raider Reboots but it doesn't live up to my excitement of playing the franchise for the first time during the Tomb Raider Legend Era.
I think the movie does its best to mix both visions of the character. But I think more survivor elements in the island would have pushed things a bit more overall for the character to feel like reboot in some ways while still have the personality inclined to old school Lara.
