I will be fine with the reboot if they make Lara and Sam canon theyseemtogoforgalpalsjesuschrist, although yes I miss that badass aura she had. I didn't play the second Tomb Raider in the reboot but I thought the gay undertones for Sam and Lara were a set up for next game? Is it not? No, Sam just vanishes in the second game, it is like she never existed. It really pisses me off. Sure the books and comics had her arrested and wat not but Lara does not even acknowledged that during the game. I just wanted Sam to be an all powerful Goddess with her girlfriend Lara but nop... ya I do not recommend the second game, youtube is the best way to watch the plot.

I have absolutely nothing against Lara being bi or gay but I kind of hate Sam with a passion LOL. She was such a flat, annoying character in the reboot, even moreso than most of the game's other characters. Personally, I'm kinda hoping that they won't feature her in any future games. But why man? But ya I get that her character needed some meat and was in the first game as a more damsel in distress. She does get interesting in the comics, I mean the whole Himiko powers that she supposedly has access too.

Someone actually got me the first reboot comic compilation for my birthday but I never even started reading it. I have heard that they've fleshed her out a bit in there but I don't know, to me her character is just tainted by how terrible it was in the first game. Same goes for most of the Endurance crew TBH. Though the reason why I dislike Sam a bit more than most of the others, I think, is that Lara's constant "SAAAAAM! SAAAAAM!" was annoying AF and also that Sam manages to get kidnapped twice in a row. Which, that's more on the plot than her character but it's so heavily linked to her character that I just can't help but associate it with her. And yeah, the damsel thing, too. I don't know, whenever I see her face or hear her name, I'm just reminded of the reboot's atrocious writing .

Fair enough, the writing is nothing special for sure and they sure could had gone with another plot for Sam but I am really shallow and want all the female romances.

I MISS CLASSIC LARA Tomb Raider is like my ALL TIME FAVORITE VIDEOGAME!!! And Lara is my favorite vg character!!! I miss my Lara, my sassy, mature and ruthless Lara Croft! My fav TR games are TR1, TR3, TR4 and TRAoD (about this one the plot is marvelous, the gameplay is shit) I played the reboot and I liked it as an origin story, the ending with the dual pistols was a beautiful and epic moment, BUT when the news of the sequel started to pop up I was really sad, the surpernatural elements are reduced and almost gone, the fucking bow can go to hell, gimme my dual pistols!!! The Lara I knew is gone and I'm here mourning The day this new Lara becomes the Lara I love maybe will be the day I play the sequels of the reboot. Oh man, I missed dual pistols greatly. I was hoping the sequel would bring them in after that tease but nop. I love the Bow but I hate every other gun on the game, give me dual pistols and bow and we are good. I liked the supernatural elements of Rise a bit more overall, cuz I kinda got creep out with some of the scary moments of the first one and that it was quite violent lol.

I've only played the two newest games. I thought they were alright, better than most "open world" stuff. Mainly I hope the next game takes us to different places around the world.
And some big action set-pieces like the Uncharted series would be nice.

Yeah I prefer the open world of these games, because they are not too big and they are actually filled with a lot of stuff that makes sense. The whole design looks natural, it's not like you did a long walk only to find a totem and that's it lol. But yeah I miss greatly the globe travelling she used to do. Hopefully they do add it for the next one.

I thought some of 2013's hubs were pretty good. Rise's, I don't know. Most of Rise's just felt too open and direction-less IMO. Generally speaking, I think a platformer like Tomb Raider is supposed to be (of course, the newer games aren't so much) usually works better with more linear, smaller, tightly designed spaces as opposed to big open ones. Same goes for Mirror's Edge vs Mirror's Edge: Catalyst, for example.

I meant as in open world compared to other open worlds games that are exaggeratedly big, I like the open world of these. According to the last news I saw, they said the next tomb raider game won't be at E3 but to expect something by the end of the year.

Oh, true. Smaller, more compact areas are definitely preferable in most cases over huge empty ones.
Yeah, though we don't know if they meant to expect news about Shadow of the Tomb Raider later this year. IIRC, they just said Lara news. Now, I'm assuming they don't mean news about the film because that's obviously not being handled by Square but it could still be sth else, we'll see I guess. Would be surprised if we didn't get an official announcement this year, though, seeing as they must've been working on it for a while now.

I spent a lot time with the classic Tomb Raider games during my my early days of gaming. I still remember going to a local video rental store and being very excited when I had a chance to rent Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider 2. My aunts used to be gamers and they loved Tomb Raider. It's thanks to them that I was exposed to so many great games back in the day. I enjoyed watching both Tomb Raider films back in the day, although I missed out on the experience of watching them in theaters.
I did go through a Tomb Raider "drought" for several years though. I never played any of the Crystal Dynamics games and haven't tried the reboot and its sequel. I rediscovered my love for the series when I was in high school and played through the original games, up to Angel Of Darkness, again. They really don't make games like them anymore! From what I've seen...the more recent installments are nothing like the classics and fail to capture the "charm" that the classics have. I have been wanting to get back into the series for quite some time now and play through everything, including the newest releases, just to finally see what they are really like. Even if I end up not liking them, I'll always have the classics to go back to. I think they still hold up pretty well today!
I'm pretty biased towards Tomb Raider/Tomb Raider 2 being the best because those were the two I had the most exposure to back in the day. I also really love Chronicles. Judith Gibbins will always be my favorite Lara Croft voice as well. She did an excellent job and I only wish she had been in more!

My favourite VA for Lara will always be Keeley Hawes. Anniversary is my favourite TR game btw, though I also loved Legend with Japan being my favourite level in the game it was like something out of James Bond, infiltrating Takamoto's penthouse, the gorgeous soundtrack, the visuals (for the time), love it

I love Keeley's voice, one of the reasons I wanted the franchise to continue with that Lara.

I think one of things I prefer Anniversary over Legend would be... it wasn't as easy ? It did stump me a few times and make me think about it more than Legend.

The only thing that I missed from Legend on that one was the action pieces. I loved jumping on baddies and going in slow motion to shoot them on Legend "I was like omg matrixxxxx", back when that effect in a game was a novelty lol. I love the level design on Anniversary more for sure. Seeing the colosseum, the giant dinosaur, it was quite the adventure. I did get stuck on that game a couple of times lol but now I know most of it by memory. The one I didn't replay as much was Underworld, I was stuck for more than a year on that one cuz I couldn't find a freaking key and the ending wasn't good, although the dlc post game made it much better at giving closure.

Same goes for Mirror's Edge vs Mirror's Edge: Catalyst, for example. Lol, sorry to derail, but I just saw that you brought up Mirror's Edge: Catalyst, and just... fucking christ, that game is dumb. I mean, just for starters, YOU DO NOT NEED A REBOOT FOR A SERIES THAT ONLY HAS ONE GAME IN IT. People LIKED the first Mirror's Edge (which you jerks ended on a total cliffhanger, by the way). People would totally play a sequel to the original Mirror's Edge. The original story was a nice, tight murder-mystery. The rebooted story... well, I forget most of the details... but I remember it being stupid and injected with false drama. The big plot twist is absurd and also so glaringly obvious that you can see it from space. "I'm so traumatised by the death of my little sister all those years ago. Oh well, time to go beat up the only other Asian woman in the game!" Sorry, back to Tomb Raider: One thing I like about the reboot games is they took inspiration from folklore stories I hadn't encountered before. That's also something I like about Uncharted. I think one of the old Tomb Raider games did an Excalibur story? Which is like... just... just pick something else. Excalibur is done. I dunno what they'll do next, but if they have to stick to one spot, I'm hoping for a South American locale. You could have a mix of snowy mountains and lush, humid jungles, and also a crowded city hub with some car chase scenes.

pessimistpanda I thought the first Mirror's Edge's story was about as shit as Catalyst's TBH . The world and backstory is interesting in both games but their actual plots are just really meh IMO and I always loved Mirror's Edge for its gameplay and art direction, not its story. Catalyst definitely wasn't quite as good as the original (mostly because of its level design) but it was still pretty damn great compared to most other modern games IMO . Far too few good, non-cartoony 3D platformers out there. The Excalibur one was Legend which was also done by Crystal Dynamics (the peeps who did Anniversary, Underworld and the reboot games) so it's not actually one of the original games. I did like the mythology in that one, though, what I hated about Legend's story was how much it changed Lara's character and backstory and the fact that it made everything about her parents. Most of the classics actually had made-up myths that only loosely tied into real-world mythologies (if at all). But then up until Angel of Darkness (AoD), they weren't very story-focused, anyway, and the story wasn't really their main draw (AoD's was pretty damn good, though, despite it having a few plot holes because the game was rushed out unfinished).
