Hello friends, and welcome to the thread for all things Tolkien! This is for all things Middle Earth-related, whether you want to talk about the book trilogy, The Hobbit, the movies, the Silmarillion, Tolkien himself - everything is welcome. “The Road goes ever on and on Down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, And I must follow, if I can, Pursuing it with eager feet, Until it joins some larger way Where many paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say”

Of course, I have watched the Lord of the Rings trilogy and own the extended editions because I am a glutton for binge watching. I have seen the first two Hobbit movies, just haven't gotten around to the third because The Hobbit is the only book I have read of the series. I know how that one ends. Seeing Kili, Fili, and Thorin die would be too much for me, especially with the Thorin/Bilbo and Kili/Fili/Tauriel things the fandom has introduced me to. I would just sob more than normal. My stepdad is so in love with LotR, and I have always been jealous of his love for it. It is a lot like my passion for Star Wars, but, let's face it, LotR is more dense and heavy than Star Wars, which is geared for younger generations. It is easier to consume than LotR. I want so badly to be able to get through the trilogy, as well as the Simarillion (pray to the gods I spelled that correctly). Growing up, I was obsessed with Legolas. I used to carry around this folder filled with fanart of Legolas and even Gimli, even before I knew what gay was. Their friendship was amazing and felt so real to me, unlike most of my friendships growing up.

(Still trying to work up the nerve to tackle the Simarillion myself, lol. askmiddlearth.tumblr.com/guides But here's a good resource on reading the Silm and other useful things) I couldn't read them 'til I was an adult because my younger self just did not want to try getting through all those lengthy descriptions of the environment and the songs, but they're actually really great and I came out of them hardcore shipping Legolas and Gimli. They're basically married.

gimolas Thanks for the guide. I will use it when I have some questions that perhaps the Wiki can't solve. Is the wiki a good one? I always liked the Wookieepedia for Star Wars, but I know some wikis are terrible, like Farscape's for example.

I actually haven't spent much time on the LOTRverse wiki, but from what I have seen it looks pretty nice and informative. It has all the family trees at least, lol. (That's the specific thing I was looking for, I was looking into once, the elf and dwarf family trees because there are some repeated names.)

I usually print out family trees and keep them available for a quick reminder.

So, uh, let's get this out of the way. Thoughts on Tauriel?

So, uh, let's get this out of the way. Thoughts on Tauriel? I don't have any strong feelings about her either way. I thought her and Kili were pretty cute? lol. Legolas was confused because he was poisoned by his father against dwarves. He learned his lesson later. She helped him realize he likes redheads. And her love for Kili helped him realize that elf/dwarf pairings are, in fact, the greatest.

I love Gimli and Legolas together, and, seeing Kili and Tauriel together for that short period of time, really helped me validate Legolas's character growth from dwarf racist to dwarf romancer. I also enjoy the actress for Tauriel, and I enjoyed seeing a dagger elf! I have no shame.

Tauriel had great hair and was brave enough to stand up to Thranduil when he was being an isolationist dick. LOTR is pretty scarce on major female characters (Eowyn and Galadriel are the only ones of real note, Arwen is nearly absent in the books, just in one of the appendices I think?) so I'm glad they had a cool dagger elf lady.

gimolas I remember her "Excuse me, asshole?" face she made when Thranduil said she wouldn't be available for Legolas as a wife anyway. She was a strong female character, and I enjoyed her a lot. I know a ton of elitists hated her though.

I know a lot of people like to shit on the movies and Peter Jackson but frankly I loved every single one of them. lol I don't care even a little bit that they're different, books and movies are totally different media, they HAVE to be different. Not that there *aren't* valid criticisms of the movies (the cast could be less blindingly white, also they somewhat ruined Gimli's character, sorry I love Gimli lmao) but they nailed so many things - the entire aesthetic, costumes, the music, a lot of the major casting (Sir Ian as Gandalf and Viggo as Aragorn, Martin Freeman as Bilbo, are absolutely flawless and could not have possibly been cast better)

I just really wanted to see them make out already. The book also had them saying they loved each other like frequently...they left it out of the movies, but this one members. GAY!!!!! Also yeah, Gimolas is a ship that sails itself.
